There are probably lots of things going on with Blackbeard's group, I just don't understand how he managed to become an emperor, being mid himself.

Pre Marineford yeah sure, it's the Devil's Fruit era of the anime, whoever has a stronger Fruit wins, but post Marineford, Haki trumps any Fruit. A team of Haki users can just walk over Blackbeard.

Which brings me to my next question. Hope I have not asked this yet, why are notorious criminals who shook the world willing work under someone so mid, people like Devon and something.

In the New World where Haki is everything, Blackbeard shouldn't be able to dominate, hope the author explains this phenomenon.

The original emperors all have powerful Haki as a base, and OP fruits on top of that (Shanks exception)
