Luffy winning the Davy Back will mean that he takes Red Hair Pirates members on his crew. It just doesn't make sense, why would Luffy do this and destroy his idol's crew like that and not just make it a friendly spar. We know both crews are good, the Red Hair Pirates know Luffy, they know he is a good kid and he wouldn't hurt Shanks. Shanks would definitely agree on friendly spars for SURE.

Because it is an already established contest we've been introduced to in the story with the purpose of competing over crewmates or other goods, it is a perfect vehicle to write that kind of competition while getting everyone on both crews involved and exhibiting their skills, it only makes sense to use what is already established than just a random contest or whatever

I think it only makes sense that Luffy and Shanks' crews are the final two who make it to the actual One Piece and competing over in a way that is ultimately just fun for everyone involved is perfect for the vibe of One Piece, especially because we are already going to get the big climatic shonen action fights with Imu and Blackbeard so it isn't necessary to triple down on that

Like the Davy Back doesn't have to be a bad thing where they steal crewmates from each other its ultimately just a competition with games to determine a winner

Which I think would be an extremely unique way to do a final showdown and end a series, plus it'll be coming down from what will likely be a massive stressful high stakes free for all fight between dozens of pirates so having something where no lives are on the line and they can have fun and fairness would be a great change of pace after so much fighting
