I know this might be a balance feature, but its really odd having my character eat the can after consuming objects cooked in tin cans. Its also odd having my character eat the glass jar when consuming looted murky water.
I think it would be better to have them still drop the item holding the food regardless of where it was found/crafted.

It is for balance but the can actually have a good explanation. It is thought that you put the can directly onto the fire so after one use it is burnted and useless
You ever cook a can over fire? I have. Theyre usually fine to cook with as long as you dont leave it in there for an extremely long time.
It is thought off as you out it into the fire
But that is just a somewhat reason. The main reason is balance. Nuts and berries gives good food and water at the start and if you could reuse the can we would have to nerf everything else
Yeah thats what im talking about. The can wont melt or anything and as long as you dont put it directly on the flame for too long (you can put it near or next to the fire and still cook.) itll be fine
Maybe you can use jars instead and make a bigger jam/nut jar. Similar to bowls and jars of honey. Jars use more resources but are reusable. Have a rypers and regular variant, or just a rypers variant to balance it to have to have the survival campfire first
I see there are some inconsistencies with jars and cans. A blueberry preserves shows a glass, uses a glass but give can back
It seems like most of the canned food gives the can back just not the nuts and berry once, and that is for balance. If it did give the can back the food and water from it would be needed to be nerfed to handful lvls, and than the can version would be pointless
Well the balancing factor on the canned versions should be the survival campfire. The difficulty of crafting that should either outweigh the easiness of getting berries and a can, or like i said make a jar version that requires like 2.5 times the amount and gives more food whilst returning the jar after consumption.
You could also treat the tin can like insect and have it give less back or something. Theres plenty of alternatives to balancing it that still allows for giving the can back if you put your brain to it.
