Addressing Concerns Around the Javascript Expansion

The JavaScript expansion's parse command could be used, in environments with improperly configured ingame permissions, to execute potentially malicious code. Servers with properly configured permissions, i.e. those where PAPI permissions were only given to users who already had file access, can not be affected by this*. We still recommend upgrading however to prevent any future possible issues. Patches disabling this command by default (in config), and sandboxing the javascript interpreter have been released. Previous versions of the javascript expansion have also been removed.

*A quick note on this, PAPI commands are only useful to users with file access on your server. They serve no purpose to anyone else.

/papi info javascript

To update the Javascript expansion, you'll need to download it manually. Download this jar - https://api.extendedclip.com/media/Javascript-Expansion-2.1.2.jar, then replace the old Javascript expansion jar in plugins/PlaceholderAPI/expansions with it.

I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to all of you. Your contributions, support, and kindness have made this such a great place to be. It's a place where we share knowledge, and experiences, help out a little and support people all over the Minecraft community - from server owners to plugin developers.

Hello,

We're reaching out to inform you that yesterday we received multiple reports from servers that have experienced server compromises.

Based on the information we've gathered and been provided, here’s what we know. Malicious actors used a third-party plugin/software to gain "force op" access on the targeted servers. Subsequently, they would download the 'Minepacks' expansion with their newly gained permissions, which contained a vulnerability. This vulnerability allowed individuals with parse permissions in PlaceholderAPI to toggle the 'Allow Unverified Expansions' boolean in the PlaceholderAPI configuration. This, in turn, opened the server to download either the 'Groopi' and/or 'Fetch' expansion, enabling the malicious actors to execute and download scripts onto the host machine.

Steps we’ve taken:

We’ve patched every version of PlaceholderAPI by immediately stopping our API serving unverified expansions to servers.
We’ve removed the ‘Minepacks’ expansion from the eCloud.
We’ve removed the ‘Groopi’ and ‘Fetch’ expansions pending a review of how we moderate these types of expansions.
We’ve banned all the bad actors from uploading to the eCloud.
We’ve released an update to PlaceholderAPI which further removes the ‘cloud_allow_unverified_expansions’ boolean from the config.
Improved the clarity of unverified expansion on the eCloud by adding additional warnings.

Servers with the ‘Minepacks’ expansion are recommended to delete it.

Whilst you can still download unverified expansions manually, this is not recommended as we cannot guarantee the expansions content.

Barry and HelpChat Web Services Restored

Hello everyone!

We’re happy to announce that Barry and HelpChat web services are now back online and fully operational.

Please note: some of your XP may have rolled back slightly. This is due to our need to restore from a backup that was approximately 30 days old. To help make up for this, we’re applying a 5x XP multiplier for a limited time! Additionally, for the first time, Double Daily XP is active for the entire month, giving you twice as much XP for checking in daily.

We were also able to fully restore daily streaks, and the streak reset has been disabled for 72 hours to allow for a grace period.

Security Notice – Malicious and Suspicious Expansions Removed
We were recently made aware of a malicious version of a third-party expansion that attempted to circumvent staff verification methods.

The expansion in question was ListCounter v1.0.0, which attempted to download an additional jar disguised as the Player expansion into: /plugins/PlaceholderAPh/expansions
ListCounter has been removed from the eCloud
The associated accounts have been suspended

The production API has been temporarily updated to only return the latest version of each verified expansion, preventing access to older versions while additional protections are developed
The ListCounter expansion was downloaded 65 times in total. It is currently unknown how many of those were specifically the malicious v1.0.0. The malicious version was never the latest, meaning it required manually selecting the older build rather than using automatic installation.

Additional Expansion Removal
During this investigation, another expansion, BuildBattlePro v1.0.3, was flagged by automated systems for suspicious network calls. This expansion has also been removed from the eCloud. It had 4 total downloads, and there is currently no confirmed malicious payload, but it has been taken down as a precaution.

Next Steps
We are actively developing a version-specific verification system to prevent version specific attacks. Additional platform safeguards and automated checks are being implemented to enhance expansion review and threat detection.
If you believe you downloaded ListCounter v1.0.0, remove the expansion immediately and inspect your server for unexpected jars and perform any necessary security scans.
We appreciate the community member who responsibly reported this and will continue to take every measure necessary to ensure the safety of the PlaceholderAPI ecosystem.

New eCloud, who dis?

After over 5 years in the making (then unmaking, switching to new frameworks, losing motivation and then finding new motivation), we’ve** finally completed a full rebuild of the PlaceholderAPI eCloud**. It’s now built on a modern framework, making it significantly easier for us to introduce new features going forward.

As previously mentioned, we’ve been working on per-version verification. This brings much-needed additional security to the expansion cloud.

One of the biggest changes is an updated account system using GitHub authentication. This means expansion authors will need to recreate their accounts and get in contact with us to regain edit access to their existing expansions.

Finally, a note for server hosts and similar providers: we’ve begun migrating from api.extendedclip.com to the *.placeholderapi.com domain. You may need to update your whitelists if users encounter any related connection errors.
The new eCloud now lives on https://ecloud.placeholderapi.com/.

Since this is a complete rebuild that should maintain legacy support, you might run into some bugs. Please let us know if anything seems a bit off!

Early Access Notice
Hytale is in early access and we expect the Hytale API to change in given time, which may result in breaking changes.

Wiki Updates
Our wiki has been updated with documentation explaining how Hytale plugins can both retrieve placeholders and provide their own.

Expansion Support
The eCloud has been updated to support Hytale expansions. Help us grow the ecosystem of Hytale supported expansions by developing your own or assisting us with porting existing expansions from our GitHub repository:

As we all tick over to the final month of the year, we’ve got a few events to help celebrate this holiday season. Thanks to the generosity of various community members we're able to host 40+ giveaways as part of HelpChat’s 24 Days of Giveaways!
