In singleplayer you can edit the world generator.

so since i started using aikar flags, i always set Xms to something like 256Mb or at max 2GB (depending on server version i will be running), as the server will start with that initial memory value
And i set Xmx to max value i want to use for example 6GB

I do this because if my machine has let's say 12GB, and i have 2 servers, both of them Xmx (max) having at 6GB, this will allow me to run both of them and not to run out of memory because i set initial (Xms) value to as i said 256MB-2GB so they won't use as much memory until they need it

What i wanted to ask, because i read everything on this thread (including Aikar's abstractly long message/s), i still do not know should i do this (set lower initial value)

it really shouldnt matter all that much if your xms is lower or equal to xmx, but its probably better to just make them the same

however, in your example you say that your machine has 12gb and you allocate 6gb to each of your 2 servers - you should definitely leave some memory free for the system to use, if you are not

so basically my main concern is (let's assume as in my previous message, 6GB will be Xmx, max value i want to use for server) that if i set initial value to 1GB or to 6GB, what is the difference from java and server perspective?

• If i allocate Xms to 1GB, server boots and gets how much it needs (let's just assume around ~500MB is now used)
• If i allocate Xms to 6GB, server boots, will it also get ~500MB just like in example with Xms1G? Because 500MB is only what he needs ATM?

It's hard for me to understand what aikar wanted to explain because nowhere is this stated, on one side i feel like this Xms doesn't matter at all while on the other side i feel like it is like when you swap RAM on your PC for more: example you have 16GB and your PC when you boot it on idle uses 2-4GB, but you then swap it with 32GB so your PC now has 32GB of RAM, you boot it and on idle it'll use 3-6GB (i know this is true i sell prebuilt PCs online and this happened me a lot of times, i just saw it and remembered it, using it as example here to better explain what i want to ask/know)

Xms defines how much ram the server receives the moment it boots

so with Xms=1gb, the server will start at 1gb allocated from the OS and slowly grow to fill the entire 6gb as needed
with Xmx=6gb, the server starts with all 6gb allocated from the OS, and never changes from there on

with Xmx=6gb, obviously the java app wont actually be using the entire 6gb for anything minecraft related right away (probably), but it is using the memory as far as the operating system knows - it basically immediately tells your OS that this ram is claimed and only it can use it

and also yes i think like you were saying there is a benefit to having more ram; i believe G1GC works better when more ram is available, so in that case it again might be better to use xms=xmx

Thing i initially wanted to know:

• is it possible to flush or at least reduce current RAM of mc server without restarting it

so you know let's say you have 1GB available and memory is like fluctuating from 600mb all the way up to 1024 and when it hits it, server lags for few seconds

and only way (from my knowledge) to "fix" that is to restart server and it'll reset memory of course and will run basically from the start point memory-wise (until this again happens, memory filling up and lagging when it hits limit)

display entities, not display A entity, they are a thing from the newer mc versions, they are entities that can display text, blocks, in whatever size. For instance, text you can change background color, etc. And it's fixed text, aka fixed direction, you can check FancyHolograms images to see it.
