Not everyone is comfortable with a down payment, which is fine (depending on the amount of work, and money involved), but make sure you take procoautions

Yeah there are many ways of going about it. I personally try to talk to them as much as I can about the commission to get what type of person they are. I know it's risky, but I like to do the commission, show progress updates, and get payment after. Its not ideal, but it gets new clients comfort that they can simply trust my skills. If they like it, they can come back again, and then I can ask for a 50/50 payment (if needed) as they're now a trusting client
Again, no matter how you do it, you have to start from they way they text you how reliant they are on the project, and how confident are you that they will pay. If you're not too confident, by all means ask for a 50/50 payment.

Red Flags for initial conversation with a client:
- They keep their texts to a minimum: "Make this", "yeah", "cool" - and general non-professional texts
- Ask you to 'copy copy' someone else's art style, not caring for your own artistic talent
- Ask you to go lower on pricing for the sake of it being cheaper and with no explanation on why
- slow replies, I'm talking like every 2 days - more in the sense that you get the feeling they may care / drag out time
- Their age, you can tell if they're a child looking for 'something cool' vs someone who is at the age that they are willing to pay

I'd check your authorized apps, as some bots can ask for permission and could add/remove servers etc, and to make sure you don't have a program on your machine that is causing it.
