Simple terms:

To make an image show in Minecraft, you simply assign that image with a character, preferably Unicode, maybe even Chinese symbols (as they will most likely not be used in game)

once you assign it to a character, all you'll need to do is add that character somewhere in Minecraft, such as a menu.
-
Once you got the image down (with it fitting the menu and looking right), I made a blank texture and assigned that to a minecart item. This would basically change the texture of the minecart item, so to keep the original and the new texture we use Custom Model Data, basically allowing us to spawn in the item but the version that uses the new textures. Add them into the slots and bam, you got button s!
With all that, you can make any kind of GUI really
