As far as Gaby I saw you were staff and the rules say not to @ staff directly, but this is just me choosing you as an individual with proper knowledge of CS and has absolutely nothing to do with Minecraft. I've been self taught since 2012 and so I avoided the semantics of time and space complexity vocab. Recently I was thinking about big o notation being the "upper bound" of the time complexity function. My question is this:

Assuming my time complexity T1 is let's say f(n) = 3n^2 + n
O(T1) = n^2 which would suggest that n^2 is the upper bound of that algorithm
When comparing it to say T2 = n^2 though, O(T2) = n^2 yet clearly T1 is at minimum 3x the length of time as T2.
Why is that not considered significant enough to carry on through the O() notation?

If big o is truly a measure of the upper bound whose purpose is to compare different algorithms efficiencies, in my mind that is significant. I've read articles hinting that big o is concerned more with infinity so that's why coefficients and smaller powers are dropped, but even considering infinities... there are infinities that grow at faster rates than other infinities so that explanation doesn't make sense to me. Again, I'm only asking you because you have malloc in your username so I assume you aren't a script kiddie and actually have proper CS knowledge. If all this is out of line or you don't even want to answer, no problem and no obligation to haha I was just curious.

An n^2 algorithm will always be worse than an n^1 algorithm, no matter the 3x in front of it

And usually, you can optimize away the 3x in the beginning by doing stuff, but you can never eliminate the biggest sign of growth, the exponential part

So that's why Big O only cares about the biggest steps, since that's the real goal of algorithm optimization

if you give me an algorithm that can do what I can do but it's 400 * log(n) or something, that will be better in larger use cases than something with 5 * n^2
