Yea they are unicoded characters. You can replace letters, punctuation, other symbols (β™€β–‘β€’β™‘β™§β˜†Β€ etc.), chinese characters etc. Some are rendered as rectangles because minecraft doesn't have them define in the assets files.

Kind of a sad fact: A person did spam-request the API I offer, edited the logs to make it appear as if I was the one sending the requests to him, and then filed an Abuse report on Hetzner.
Thankfully hetzner didn't just take the stuff down - like some other Google owned site I know of - but instead forwarded the report to me and requested that I provide a statement, reply and what I'll do to fix it.
Told them that this stuff is fake, and that the email I should contact did bounce stuff back, so also fake, and they left it at that with no further stuff happening.
