I am wondering, why do you need to read the files yourself? There is an api for all 4 of your placeholders. Can't you just use those instead?

From what I know, they're hold in memory so file reads are not done every time one of those placeholder is parsed

While the expansion is fine, I'd be more comfortable verifying it if it used that. You might not understand but placeholders can end up being parsed up to 20 times a second. There are scoreboards for example that do that. Reading the files every time a request is made, is a bit much.

Since the messages are ephemeral to keep them private (when using mail commands) I opted to not immediately hide them from you if you chose to read them back.

Initial designs did have me automatically doing it, but I felt this was a better end-user experience, rather than forcing them to use the have-read bool to see it again.

This was also driven by the fact that if you went to view a rather large piece of mail or multiple pages, you would either have to deal with a shrinking pagination, or make the user re-submit the same command to view new mail.

I suppose a /mail next would've recovered this, but I'm not necessarily sold on it over this per se.
