Also, just to close this topic, I am not getting paid. While I see that Nvidia is overall ahead of AMD, their 4090 beats anything of AMD ofc, but AMD is overall the better company and that is a fact. AMD prices are also quite better, IE top amd gpu is at the same level of the 4080 for 300 bucks less or so. Sure, Nvidia has better DLSS (although, imo, amd is not THAT far from it). There is also the fact that nvidia is worth trillions while AMD is far from it. Nvidia has a lot more funding sadly, so it is normal that DLSS, etc are better. But there is also the fact that FSR works in several gpus while DLSS only in the latest gpus of nvidia. Both have their Pros and Cons, just like Apple and whatever. I myself, prefer supporting the good company that provides maybe less but is also cheaper and provides almost the same performance than to let nvidia milk me.

Like this honestly sounds like a premature optimization that will only affect your first load per site deployment if you have proper browser caching setup

Yeah stuff like that is less about the latency to the user, and more the load of the server that serves the files

Obviously at a high level of traffic, why host your own file servers/CDNs when you could just use someone else's for super cheap and have easy global access

But yeah for anything less than like hundreds of users a second, really not worth the tradeoff and added complexity

Oh I mean, surely it can't be that hard to use the Cloudflare APIs direclty?

And I'd imagine you'd need to do that anyways to use like a custom ORM or whatever

They do

It's a wrapper around it for Nuxt projects

Cause there's a couple steps for deploying them to pages

So you just use this one package and it's a single command

when I used the Amazon version of basically Cloudflare Pages, you just pointed it to the Github repo and had it run npm run build or whatever and it worked perfectly with a Nuxt app I was working on

It's still pretty new, so there's maturing that needs to be done.

With Nuxt you have to create the project, set the adapter for pages, ensure everything else is good to go, etc.

They're going to expand to more infras like Vercel and maybe AWS.

I think the only thing I liked about the split approach is that the frontend will always load, and if the backend has errors you can show an error after the spinner.

But the downside is 2 codebases, the upside is you have more control with what data to pass, and the caching setup

I mean, depending on how your site is architected, you can still easily achieve the first. If upon loading the page, you do async calls to fetch the extra data or whatever that you would be doing anyways, it'll work exactly like that.

And if you have like a serious problem where your backend is completely down, I guess you would just have a nice 503 page on Nginx or something

Have you seen ElysiaJS for Bun? It has a feature that can generate all your types for you to pass to your frontend.

But yeah I was doing a lot of that exact thing at my university with Django + HTMX. We'd send the initial page ASAP and then use HTMX to fetch whatever other data we needed in a separate, failable request that had a loading spinner and everything all nice

The project I was working on that's in PHP was too big to consider migrating to a framework.

I mean at that point it's actually worse to have multiple geographically sparse backend servers, since the extra database roundtrip latency will be worse than just the single latency to the server

So it's better to just have one location that has database + backend in very close proximity, for minimal latency

idk if you know Theo, but he has like 5 videos about this exact thing and why the edge kinda sucks for a lot of stuff

Would an incremental migration not be an option? Migrate a few routes at a time, etc.

Would be easy to do with any reverse proxy, and likely the way you have everything setup it would not be hard to share a database and everything

Laravel truly is a blessing, the only backend framework I've found that comes anywhere close is Django and it has a long way to go

But me and another dude have been working since Decemberish of last year to overhaul the site to make the DX sane.

Most of Django's benefit is in the built-in admin panel, but Laravel has a lot of great options in that regard that are a lot more extensible (aka Filament)

Funny because the PlayMC site is done with Next.js, I tried to move it into a Laravel Inertia app, and it was such a pain..

It was hell at first, but I've gotten it down pretty solid now.

We'd like to do a frontend framework at some point.

But it's just 2 guys working on it in their freetime.

We already did a shit ton of optimizations to database queries. It was doing over 1 billion a week and we have it down to under 200 million now with almost double the traffic.

Honestly, was the site more than just a static marketing thing? I can't imagine a world where it would be easier to have a whole Next.js setup than just to setup Inertia.

Or honestly for something static, yeah that could honestly just be better

So the goal is to finish the overhaul of the project where the DX is sane again and then consider options of migrating to a framework or whatnot.

Well... I built out a TS API for all the static data it stores in the database so we moved the data out of there and redesigned it so that the client just fetches the data and caches it in the browser.

No sense in having the DB do computing for data that doesn't change often.
