For years now this song has been a little personal tradition of mine, so I thought it was finally time that I animated this classic with my own spin to it!

Heavily inspired by Ann D-Vine, who made the original Gmod and SFM versions of this wonderful song by the Deadworkers, links below in that order:

This is far from mainstream. You could call bands like Sabaton, Five Finger Death Punch, or even Rammstein mainstream since they're pretty accessible for everyone.
This piece of music here, along with other heavy tracks from the same album, songs from Eternal as well, can be compared with other similar stuff, for example, such bands like Vildhjarta, Humanity's Last Breath... or Black Tongue, which, in my opinion, have some of the heaviest albums that I wouldn't dare to call beginner metal. wood

For those who are curious and don't know, these 11 tracks are the official soundtrack of doom eternal that was supposed to be released. However, the original files were almost impossible to find, as they had gone through compression by id software and were then reuploaded multiple times on various platforms such as youtube... which resulted in further compression. So, I downloaded them directly from Mick's official website. I can say that these are the original, high-quality files because they're Mick's direct upload. I visually and auditorily compared them to other versions uploaded on youtube and other platforms, and can say that Mick's versions are objectively better. All the dynamics and details, high end details are preserved, unlike in the flat overcompressed versions you may have heard before. This is basically the best quality you can find on the internet, currently.

||As far as I know, Mick just recently returned the doom eternal section to his site, and even later he attached his soundtrack. So before that it was impossible to find it, only the version by Id Software.||

Stable source 320 kbps bitrate files:

That’s not necessarily true. Owners of the Collector’s Edition OST were able to get ahold of the FLAC versions of these mixes. By virtue of being encoded in a lossy audio codec, these are still compressed. I can link the lossless quality versions of these mixes

Here is every single in-game stem from DOOM 2016, DOOM Eternal, and The Ancient Gods Pt. I & II. I've also contained the DOOM 2016 Official Soundtrack and the DOOM Eternal Collector's Edition Soundtrack (including the above mixes) in lossless audio quality. Furthermore, I've also linked Mick Gordon's COVID livestream where he debuted the metal choir scratch track, his remix of the DOOM 3 intro music, and the alpha Super Gore Nest music (lovingly titled 264bpm by the community). This is the highest quality material available, outside tracks officially produced by Mick, Andrew, or David. If anyone tries to convince you that they have material of a higher audio quality, they're either lying or extremely skilled at music production. # fallow egret Here is every single in-game stem from DOOM 2016, DOOM Eternal, and The Ancient ...

Comparing these two versions, it seems that what was provided by you is a parody of the soundtrack from an incompetent employee at Id. Objectively, what was provided by you is a fierce compression of the source files which could not have been in FLAC format initially. Also, converting the file format manually does not improve the quality and instead adds artifacts.
Just compare these 2 tracks and draw the conclusion yourself. The first is what you attached "the best quality possible". And 2 is what I downloaded from Mick's website.
I have also attached a screenshot of the track visualization so that you can see for yourself the effects of Chad Mossholder's compression on your version.

fringe mist
fallow egret
#

Mick probably shipped it 1db quieter back in March 2020. In the example of the FLAC Cultist Base, it's at 1836kbps. By virtue of being in a lossy format, the mixes on Mick's site are, by definition, compressed. Just because it has a more distinct high end, it doesn't mean it's uncompressed; far from it

#

It kinda sounds like you're denying the existence of the CE OST, which is a bit ridiculous

fringe mist
#

I also cannot confirm that the files were originally in this format

fallow egret
#

And digital compression results in a loss of audio quality, this is a fact. It's just 1db quieter

#

Bro, you're just complaining about how the waveform looks

The lighter shade of purple is the RMS value of the track. For our purposes, it essentially demonstrates the volume that each individual sine wave is playing at. Do you see how during the opening, the lighter shade of purple is bigger than the following light combat? That means the loud parts are loud and the quiet parts are quiet

fringe mist
#

which is which

fringe mist
#

and in the lower one it remains as quiet as it should be

fallow egret
#

You’re kinda just being purposefully obtuse now. You know for a fact I meant the heavy combat music, but you’re choosing to be a square. Not cool man

fringe mist
#

it's just objective. At this point it’s simply stupid to deny the presence of compression

fallow egret
#

Mate, that very opening chunk with the pitch at the beginning is the exact same in the MP3 (for clarity, I boosted the FLAC version by 1db to demonstrate)

fringe mist
#

erm you can tell at this scale

fallow egret
#

Are you aware that Mick shipped the 2016 OST at -0.3db? It's not unlikely for him to ship the tracks he mixed for Eternal at -1.0db

fallow egret
#

In fact, the MP3 looks more compressed by virtue of the fact that there's scarcely any - for lack of a better word - valleys between the beats

fringe mist
fallow egret
#

Don't even fib yourself buddy

fringe mist
#

i mean, you just proved the opposite to your self. At this point it's really kinda stupid.

fallow egret
#

I think what you're failing to realise is that the FLAC version is just an older mix. You can tell by the incongruent tempos. So what you're complaining about has nothing to do with compression and everything to do with being a less up-to-date mix. No matter how you spin it though, the FLAC Cultist Base is still lossless

fringe mist
#

they also have different target loudness

fringe mist
fallow egret
#

You're proving my point that the FLAC is just an older mix lol

fringe mist
fallow egret
#

Not really champ. It's still lossless

fringe mist
#

In fact, I can’t check now whether they were actually originally in this format and with the same bitrate, since anyone can edit the files. And by ear, I would say that an mp3 file with a bitrate 320 has more details than than the flac, which may indicate that the bitrate or the format was simply manually changed by Chad for example. I wouldn't be surprised.

fallow egret
#

Now you're just throwing shit to the wind. Nowhere in Mick's medium article does it state that the tracks he produced for the CE OST were tampered with outside of changing the file name. That's a pretty massive hole in your argument brother

fringe mist
#

There's also a hole in your argument since the version i sent lacks the compression that you pretty much found yourself in the CE version, which means that there have been changes besides the name. That's just simply bullshit.

fallow egret
#

Prove it. Get Mick on the horn and demonstrate without a shadow of a doubt that his work was tampered with before being shipped. I'd love to see it

fringe mist
fallow egret
#

The burden of proof is on you to support your hypothesis that Mick's work was compressed by Chad Mossholder before the CE OST was published. Go ahead

fringe mist
#

i'm not questioning Mick's direct upload to his own site. You just proved yourself that Chad put some compression on it after all. Yet you're stating that there weren't any changes beside the file name...

#

would you rather call a file that wen't through id's shit more original than a direct upload by the composer

fallow egret
#

Occam's Razor dictates that the FLAC is an older mix. This is supported by the following statements:

  1. Mick was given a very short deadline to produce his 12 tracks for the CE OST per the contract that Bethesda assigned him.
  2. He had to miss out on family time to produce these 12 tracks and get very little sleep under his desk in his office.
  3. The CE OST released on the 20/4/2020, and the mixes uploaded to Mick's site became available around mid-2024.
  4. Chad Mossholder’s only known contribution to the CE OST is his 47 arrangements and changing at least two of the titles Mick used for select ambient tracks.
  5. The MP3 mix is at a slightly different tempo to the FLAC mix.

Your conclusion is that Mick is infallible and someone else was fucking around with his music, despite never mentioning it in his open letter. Given that they were songs he was contracted to produce, it's a pretty massive claim that someone went in and tampered with them because you don't like how the waveform looks. Never once did it occur to you that Mick was crunched, couldn't produce his usual quality, sent over his tracks to meet Bethesda's contract so he could get paid and put the whole thing behind him, only to revisit his tracks later and upload them to his website in (my opinion) worse quality and in an inferior audio codec.

#

Before you respond, it boils down to you claiming that even more corporate sabotage was occurring and Mick would just casually forget that music he slaved over was tampered with further. Please sit with that before responding

fringe mist
#

Did it not bother you that even those songs in the CE ost that were constructed from in-game score chunks, which have a fairly low bitrate, also have a flac format with the same bitrate as Mick's tracks? Why do you think Chad couldn't change the bitrate of Mick's tracks, just like he did with his game-rip remixes, and accordingly, why do you think he wouldn't then throw a compressor on top of Mick's work, like he did with his part of the ost? Knowing how objectively incompetent Chad is... I think there is definitely no logical sense to continue anything further here. Dm if you wish this to keep this going, because i don't.

fallow egret
#

Because there’s no proof of it. Your ideas are all well and good, but unless you can incontrovertibly support them with a comment from Mick, Chad, or anyone associated with the DOOM Eternal CE OST, your hypothesis means nothing. I can’t in good faith agree to slander someone further without solid proof of your hypothesis happening. Frankly, it’s not fair. To address your comment about the in-game score chunks having the same bitrate as Mick’s mixes, it all depends on how it’s exported. Hell, I’ve constructed the Eternal score myself using in-game stems, and the bitrates for those tracks vary from 1300-1800kbps when encoded as FLAC. I don’t understand what you’re getting at with this point. I’m fine to leave it here

vocal python
vocal python
fallow egret
#

You're confused. I'm addressing the claim that the tracks Mick produced for the CE OST were tampered with by Chad Mossholder after being sent to id Software. This is a massive claim from yarik that has no easily verifiable or easily researched evidence. Instead, the most parsimonious explanation for the discrepancy between the FLAC mixes and the material uploaded to Mick's site is that the FLAC mixes are just older and were made during a time of crunch

vocal python
# fallow egret You're confused. I'm addressing the claim that the tracks Mick produced for the ...

And my response is confused because...?

There is no evidence that says Chad messed with it, at least I don't feel like looking up for it, that doesn't mean it didn't happen, you don't need direct evidence for everything, you can make connections based on other pieces of evidence, Chad Mossholder works for id Software as an audio designer, to say he tampered with it after being sent to id implies he is independent from id. Chad would have been one of the last ones working on it due to, again the fact he works for id. It is not a very big leap of logic to believe that Chad could have edited Mick's work.

ok so i was looking back at mick gordon's letter and it literally says Chad used/had access to Mick's tracks in the ost.

fallow egret
#

Right, absolutely. Prove that Chad tampered with them though

#

If Mick took special care to note where Chad edited the titles of select ambient tracks and gave himself credit, then don’t you think Mick would also mention that the songs he submitted were compressed by Chad? We’re retreading old ground here

vocal python
#

...

what do you want me to get security footage

...

  • Chad has Mick's track

  • Many believe that Mick's are of the best quality

  • Chad has to finish the OST

please connect these dots, it is not that hard to realize that Chad may have gone through mick's tracks, and since he is the one making the ost now, he did what he wanted to do

vocal python
#

actually i may have misread that

One detail is a lot more noticable than the other, compression is hard to notice (example:you), so it is reasonable to believe Mick would not have checked

fallow egret
#

Mate, I’ve already listed the points that demonstrate there is no concrete evidence that Chad tampered with Mick’s submitted mixes outside of changing the title. Again, retreading old ground.

By the same token, how would Mick know that his track titles were changed if he didn’t have access to the CE OST? He does have access, as he has listened to them, evidenced by his open letter

#

You’re speculating on the inner workings of a video game OST that you have no involvement in. You don’t know the full story and neither do I. Instead of playing around with details, I’m just accepting what’s given to me until more concrete evidence is presented. That’s how this works

#

If you need proof that Mick has access to the FLAC downloads of the CE OST, then look no further than his medium article, where he included screenshots of select tracks that Chad assembled for the CE OST. In fairness, there’s no way to know that Mick didn’t just download these off YouTube and changed the name of the file, but, that doesn’t really help your case either

vocal python
# fallow egret Mate, I’ve already listed the points that demonstrate there is no concrete evide...

And I've listed the points that can be used to make a logical conclusion that Chad could have edited those tracks. 3 messages ago.

I'm not saying Mick doesn't have access to the OST, I'd be dumb if i did as scrolling down to the next section reveals he listened to it.
Again, a title change is extremely obvious for anyone, adding a compressor is not, you would need to compare the tracks, which again, Mick most likely did not do, as he already had plenty of burnout, and found out about unfair payment.

On the message below the one I'm replying to, this makes no sense, it implies no-one can theorize about the inner working of things they're not apart of, which they can, because we have part of the story to draw conclusions from.

fallow egret
#

Given that your claim has fewer lines of evidence, it’s nowhere near as well backed as mine. That’s how parsimony and supporting a claim works.

Mick is well-experienced in mixing, mastering, and composing. If one person on Discord suggests that the music is compressed, then surely the artist who assembled said music would make a note of that in his open letter, especially as it pertains to a legal contract. Given that this didn’t happened, I disagree that the tracks Mick assembled for the CE OST were compressed by Chad.

You’re allowed to “theorise” (hypothesise really), but you’re using your imagination to fill in the blanks instead of taking the information presented at face value, and then forming a conclusion. This is what we like to call confirmation bias, where you already have a conclusion in mind (i.e. Chad is an asshole), and then using extraneous elements to support that conclusion. You’re not using the facts presented by Mick, you’re just relying on your feelings. I’m not going to discuss this with you further as you fail to fully understand my previous statements

#

To reuse a line I stated earlier; “I can’t in good faith agree to slander someone further without solid proof of your hypothesis happening. Frankly, it’s not fair.”

vocal python
# fallow egret Given that your claim has fewer lines of evidence, it’s nowhere near as well bac...

If you wanna end this, sure, I do want to say a last few things though.

I completely agree with the last point about slander, i personally have tried not to badmouth Chad as, I dont like being negative, and I have not heard much of his work to make a conclusion as his ability as an artist, since he worked heavily with Mick iirc on Doom 2016 as more of a buddy, I am inclined to believe he is a good artist, as he inspired Mick on 2016

I have not really been full force on supporting what I believe, I agree with that as well.

I think there's not really a proper conclusion to this argument, as this just comes down to how one takes evidence, whether to speculate about what one can't confirm, or to believe only what is confirmed, thinking about it a bit more, I want to recognize that both are valid, I don't want to come out of this being super aggressive, unlike how I may have been in the middle of it.

fallow egret
#

That’s more than fine and I respect your decision. You’re right, it does come down to how evidence is analysed. I’m also not on the Chad hate bandwagon. I’ve used it as examples to support my thesis, but I really don’t think it’s warranted. I appreciate you taking the time to have a chat

vocal python
#

Glad this ended positively

fringe mist
# fallow egret Because there’s no proof of it. Your ideas are all well and good, but unless you...

You can't prove otherwise. Your points have little to do with what you said. I would also like to return to point 5. The tracks have the same tempo, but if you looked closely, you could have noticed that they don't start at the same time. If you synchronize their beginnings, then you will see for yourself that the tempo is the same. Before making an argument, you should at least check the information.
My statements are based on facts, not someone else's words. All you have to do is to compare Mick's files with ID's files to understand how ID messed it up. It's overly compressed, as was the entire CE album, which was Chad's responsibility. It is foolish to argue that the supposed versions sent by Mick to Id in 2020 and the version from his website differ, without any actual evidence to support your claim. You cannot know this for sure since the file went through ID, so it's impossible to know what it was like before ID potentially worked on it. Therefore, your arguments are unfounded and don't have any factual basis.
Also, returning to the nonsense you said, all the chunks from in-game score are already sufficiently compressed. Changing the format to flac will not magically restore the already lost data. Therefore, it is nonsensical to try and do so, as the file will take up more storage without any improvement in sound quality. It seems that you know very little about files and the ways of converting them...

fallow egret
#

Brother, leave it be. I don't agree with you in the slightest. You're incredibly obtuse to deal with and I frankly don't care anymore. Download the files or don't, just fuck off

fringe mist
#

Lmao, of course you don't. What would i expect from someone who doesn't even know what he's talking about... Should have at least a basic understanding of what you’re talking about before making arguments. Relying on someone else’s documents doesn’t make sense when there are obvious facts to support the information right in front of your eyes. For example, the presence of compression in the tracks from Id is clear evidence, which you have literally shown yourself, but then later denied it, claiming that "Mick didn’t write about it in his post" Well, he most likely just didn’t write about this just to avoid confusing people like you, who don’t know shit about music and the related terminology. He simply stated the fact that his work in general was tampered with in a clear and understandable way for everyone to understand. There's really nothing more that needs to be known than that, the post is clearly not about all that.
Whatever... 🍪

Both tracks are similar in that they are groove-based, and yet so different. One is more of an ambient track, describing the vast locations of Exultia, not counting the heavy parts. The other objectively describes a more intense setting, as it literally takes place in a demon base, always keeping you on edge. Both tracks are so unique, so I would just leave it at that; they are both equally masterpieces.

One of mine too, I just mean in the sense that they have a fraction of popularity compared to some pop artists

#

@vocal python

vocal python
#

In that sense, yeah i'd agree, imagine if they collabed with taylor swift, portnoy did a drum video on one of taylor swift's song, and i think it was her bassist that played caught in a web

marble hollow
#

Was that on drumeo?
Makes sense that Taylor Swift's musicians would like dream theater

vocal python
#

yeah, wonder if they'll do more pop stuff in the future, i walk beside you from octavarium was a lot brighter than most of DT's stuff and i really enjoyed it

marble hollow
#

thats the nice thing about prog metal.. there really aren't a lot of boundaries

vocal python
#

Opens my eyes to a lot of stuff, periphery doesnt focus too much on prog but they got me into a lot of harsher vocals

marble hollow
#

ppl like to hate on slipknot, but they really were a stepping stone for me into a lot of harsh vocals.. now i cant get enough of it

vocal python
#

I haven't listened to much slipknot yet, only their self titled album, but it felt weird in a really nice way

marble hollow
#

a lot of harder metal truly is an acquired taste.. i used to make fun of my friends who listened to it, but they would force me to listen to it, and one day it just clicked
i used to hate slipknot, death or cannibal corpse, but now i love it 😅

vocal python
#

I still haven't gotten on to much death metal yet, i've been focusing a lot on thrash and prog, since i only really started getting into metal last year, before that it was just osts

marble hollow
#

nah, definitely to each their own, music is is funny that way, im mostly talking about when i was young and immature, but it's hard to convince ppl that your music is better, or their music is bad
it has to speak to you

vocal python
#

I'm like really respectful to my friends stuff, they listen to rap and stuff like that, doesn't really feel right the way rock/metal does, i usually only really talk about rock/metal as a joke, yet they randomly say how they just can't get into rock that well, no idea why

#

don't really wanna paint the picture that they are being disrespctful about it though, most the time they aren't

marble hollow
#

yeah, music is very subjective, like i listen to a lot of rap too.. i listen to a lot of different stuff, but theres some newer rap or hiphop that i just dont understand at all, but thats why music is funny, it just clicks for certain ppl differently

vocal python
#

I don't really know why i don't like rap, i'm fine with the percussion stuff, i listen to polyphia, works well when they use it, i'm fine with rap vocals, rage against the machine is awesome, but when they come together it just feels kinda boring

#

maybe its cause i haven't really listened to rap with the intent to enjoy it, mostly just like hearing snippets of the popular songs off ig notes and on peoples speakers

pretty much all the music on my playlist i listen to with the intent to be a fan

marble hollow
#

it was just my generation.. when i was 12-14 years old, eminem and limp bizkit were huge asf, late 90s, early 2000s, gangsta rap was huge.. but i always loved grunge and thrash metal back then too, then the metal tastes just started evolving... like ive heard polyphia too and its just not my thing, but i really dont care if someone likes it, thats their thing, and i truly do respect the talent those guys have too

who am i to tell someone they are wrong

vocal python
marble hollow
#

yea, it just doesnt speak to me, i mean its definitely talent and sounds kind of cool, but it doesnt give me those goose bumps that other songs/artists give me

vocal python
#

Yeah, I'm a really big fan of songs that feel really big/dynamic, one - metallica, wax wings - periphery, marigold - periphery, finally free - dream theater, in the name of god - dream theater, so it ends up being a lot of my favorite bands have a lot of those, again dt and muse have a lot of those, and they're my favorites

marble hollow
#

yeah, dream theater has such epic songs, ive been a fan of them for a long time, seen them live a cpl of times too, but they just make my whole body react to the music.. i know i am a big fan of bands that other ppl dont like either, but it just doesnt matter to me anymore.. one band that i rly love that seems to have a lot of haters too is trivium
the singer and guitarist of that band too always talks about john pertucci being a major infuence

vocal python
#

i missed out on dt live feburary, im so sad i looked back on the setlist and it was so good

marble hollow
#

they just came by me very recently too.. but i hate going to concerts during the cold/winter months.. they just got mike portnoy back too, so it was hard passing on it, i hope they come back again in the warmer months 😄

the next show im debating on is in flames/machine head at the end of april

vocal python
#

its kinda hard for me to go to shows, im just a 14 year old with very little money so i have to convince my dad to buy the tickets, so i can't really go to more expensive shows, its why i missed out on dt

marble hollow
#

oh damn, yeah that definitely makes it harder.. im at the prime age of 37 now and my issue is finding ppl who want to go to shows with me 😄 but ive started to go to shows solo now lol

vocal python
#

breaking benjamins coming a few days after my birthday... maybe i could splurge a bit, tickets aren't too bad

#

sick talk but im afraid going any longer is probably risking being too off-topic, even if it still is metal, so probably should end it here, or like switch it to messages

marble hollow
#

those prices are definitely fair... thats my only issue with the bands i like getting more popular.. the ticket prices just start getting ridiculous

ehh.. i wouldnt worry about being off topic here.. were at least talking about music

vocal python
#

still i've been warned for stuff another mod was fine with talking about, and im kinda tired tbh, so im gonna stop, nice talking

marble hollow
#

definitely, keep it metal! 🤘 don't let others influence your tastes

I dont no why
But
The 7 mix of original Mick soundtrack for Doom Eternal is in Spotify

fossil sequoia
#

In truth, it's such a mess that I don't even know if it's Mick's Mixes.
But no big deal.
It's like the same music from the game. And what they have on the Spotify album is like less than 10% of the original music.
But hey, 10% of perfection is better than 0.

#

It's such a fan thing that "the only thing they fear is you" doesn't even get a proper ending cut.
But oh well.
For any Doom fan waiting for this album, it's better than nothing.

#

Well, after several listens with different audio sources...
Yes, the mix of this album uploaded by a fan isn't great.
But hey...
Let's just say it's a dream that one day Mick and ID will reconcile.
And that Mix will finish his final mix.
For now, we can dream as we may.

# fossil sequoia How long do you think the Doom TDA album will be?

Because the game is 22 levels long and there’ll be lots of cutscenes, then it’s possible we get 3 tracks per level (cutscene track, ambience, combat theme), resulting in a 66 track long album. This doesn’t include Chad Mossholder’s contributions either. I think 66+ tracks is a bit excessive. Instead, I think a more reasonable 42 is in the cards. I can’t see this soundtrack being much larger than Mick’s 31 track long 2016 OST

agreed. Also, probably something most people don't care about that much in a doom soundtrack, but the ambient was basically nothing. Like some of the most catchy stuff in previous games was what played outside of combat, when you can actually listen to it and are not focusing on the gameplay. It's just quiet droning and thats it. I also hoped for more inclusion of classical elements, at least I assumed that from what we heared before release, but there are only like 2 moments outside of the teasers where violins and horns are contributing and even that was forgettable.

I think the criticisms you might have come from the OST still being new to you. It doesn’t help that there are some problems in game of the score being drowned out by SFX and an occasional bug where no music plays at all (in fact, I thought this was a deliberate choice in Harbor of Souls). This makes for an unfortunate experience where if you were to play the game as presented to you, then you’re going to have an even more difficult time getting used to the new sound for the OST. I recall getting confused between Meathook and TOTTFIY when they first came out because they’re both tracks that feature heavy syncopation, playing over the bar line, have descending synth melodies, and are arranged similarly. In retrospect, these are fundamentally different tracks, so the confusion I had is silly. I feel as though a lot of people are going to experience the same thing with The Dark Ages

#

Point of the matter is to let the dust settle, refocus, and appreciate the intricacies of each track. Do yourself a favour and boost the music volume, drown out the SFX, and set the audio mix to headphones. You’ll have a better time

I haven't played the game yet, this is based on the spotify track, it's why I could name the songs off rip cuz they stuck. I think mix wise it's fantastic but I personally feel they could've done more, especially when it comes to references. Is it ok to ask more for a dlc, especially considering they won't have to produce as much.
Don't get me wrong I really like about 6-8 of them, I think infernal chasm and the menu theme stick but it's just my personal opinion.

fallow egret
#

And I’m sure that opinion will evolve through time too. I think Finishing Move did a wonderful job and they should be commended for their efforts. It’s just exciting that we have phenomenally mixed DOOM music to enjoy

cyan sierra
#

RE criticism, TOTALLY fine to critique the OST (even if I'm here). To me, art isn't a zero sum game, I'm totally fine with some preferring a different style or direction. I have so much love for the other DOOM OSTs, but we just did our best to carve our own path and do what we thought was best for the setting and gameplay.

#

It's a biiiiig long OST, so a lot of cool moments get lost in the mix, and the thoughts and intentions aren't always obvious. Hoping to do a lot more BTS walkthroughs and answer questions diving into all the nerdiness.

Yes! RE your previous message about the easter eggs: I'm no actually sure what I'm allowed to officially disclose. There were some easter eggs, but we weren't sure how heavy to go on them since the previous titles included a lot, and didn't want to seem like we were "replacing" them. I think since we developed a dark ages "sound" now, it would be really cool to include more in the future 🤘 (there was actually a full track that was basically a doom II cue that didn't get used in the end, but might see the light of day eventually...)

Hey, any time! I might just be a bit slow to respond. Two favs have to be “From the Ashes” and “Into the Void”.

From the Ashes has this badass early 70s heavy metal vibe to the main riff, which became the motif for the slayer throughout the game. Combined with so much exploration of the gritty Dark Ages palette through the orchestral and folk instrument textures.

Into the Void was a totally different beast, exploring a vastly different world in the game. Crazy synth exploration, mangling organic recordings into synthetic sound (loading field recordings into Synplant 2 is nuts, seeing what it comes up with), and the dark emotional breakdown later in the track has a special place in my heart 🖤

# fallow egret I think the criticisms you might have come from the OST still being new to you. ...

In your infinite wisdom you were right lol. I have like 5 tracks I really love lol. I will say my opinion on the latter half of the ost hasn't changed, but here's what I enjoyed:

GOATS:

From the Ashes
When the Shadows First Lengthened
Infernal chasm
Unholy siege
Into the Void

AWESOME:

Unchained predator
Atlan Battleground
Pursuit of demons
Divine retribution

GREAT:

Blood Red
Hellspawn rift

(ambients):

Unyielding
Transdimensional
Cosmic sea
He is out there

If Alex or Jay or the other Brians see this, ya'll did a phenomenal job, I feel really bad that the ost is watered down ingame. I still think the latter game tracks coulda been better, I would've like Wither and Writhe to have only synths.

That just depends on what you like about Doom OSTs. That's the beauty of it, so many things come together to create the sound of Doom. I personally enjoy Eternal OST more as a standalone thing, than I do TDA OST, mostly because of the sound design, ear candy, and just overall attention to detail in Eternals OST. Which in my opinion makes it hold up more as a standalone thing, where TDA OST feels a bit boring to listen to on its own. But still, TDA OST fits really well with the aesthetic of the game, I really like its overall sound characteristic and vibe. They absolutely nailed that.

OOF, hype hits too hard but will disappeared after a single month that's always the same thing that happened with hype, Mick has invented a whole subgenre by himself with wanting it and even less pretending to made it (Argent Metal, because DOOM Metal was already taken, it's saying!), because he's a humble and kind person yet very talented and his art speaks for itself and himself, Finishing Move just pump so much from Mick's credibility, I sincerely hope they just wanted to pay hommage to Mick instead of just surfing on his work and flow and aura

Okay so I have some more thoughts on the ost. After some more listens and getting to know the inspirations I can appreciate some more nuances + there are definitely some bangers. My main complaint remains though, I can see what they were going for and it's some cool ideas in theory, however a lot of the time it crumbles under its own weight. Cool riffs just become white noise because the distortion overpowers the tone and the drums are like obnoxiously loud and disrupt intricacies from the comparatively thin guitars or synths or orchestral elements. On some tracks they made this approach work, like from the ashes, divine retribution and between hex and flame, but on others melody and groove just get crushed in the full mix. And I think its a shame, because mixed differently they could sound great.

Oh it's all good!! I love hearing alternate takes on it. Super cool that you took the time to make it.

There were a lot of conversions on the sonic aesthetic of the OST. We chose to go for a more organic and gritty/hairy open sound for this game, which actually felt like it blended better with those more open cinematic sections. Also, nobody does Mick better than Mick, so we wanted to respect that (kind of like Ludwig on The Mandalorian not trying to be John Williams).

For me, there are 5 bangers, from the ashes, WTSFL, unholy siege, infernal chasm and into the void.
Into the void is obviously the most unique one considering its use of synth but the rest have different feels. I'd argue unholy siege and infernal chasm have really good choirs and orchestral stuff, unholy siege has the most militaristic feel besides pursuit of demons. From the ashes is very medieval and obviously WTSFL is a really good menu theme. My criticism is that the melodies should be more in the fore front. Like wither and writhe. I really like its melody but it's so faint sometimes, you only hear it better in Blood Red. Songs like divine retribution has a melody during the end that's catchy but easy to miss from the riffs. But the team is very responsive and very genuine so I have no doubts that they'll improve significantly.

flint turtle
#

Oh yeah wither and writhe is a good example, love the octave riff (at least I think it is) that kicks in at 1:20. That is very black metal coded

yeah I did. I certainly wouldn't call the soundtrack "mid" anymore, that probably was a bit of an overreaction. But you kinda have to dig to get to the good stuff and I still feel like there is this crust over the whole thing, that makes everything a bit muddier than it should be. I've had this sensation multiple times now, where I relisten to a track and just wish a melodic layer, be it guitar, synth or strings, would be louder.

The only thing I believe is less than good in dark ages is soundtrack. Mick Gordon has rightfully become part of new dooms identity since doom 2016 and even won at VGA! Not for empty reason. And now we ar ehaving rather generic soundtrack in this doom... I play with previous soundtracks on.

Even eternals dlc music sounds somewhat better that this. But it also would be better to have Mick doing all of that back then!

some iconic songs have synths (BFG division, TOTTFIY), a major part of Micks talk is synths, thats much easier than all the other stuff mick did too, so people just do that

also this stuff is not close to thrash 😭 , closer to death or industrial https://youtu.be/bQMPnot1kGY?list=OLAK5uy_kqmU-WKQrmq93_hQ7WldPgi8u1CO6VeCE&t=44
