2016's maps are much better than eternal and it largely teaches the player the mechanics without actually telling them anything, which is really impressive.

Eternal just shoves you into a dev room until you successfully show you've learned the mechanic and then puts you into the weirdest levels ever made. 2016 does suffer from not having weak points though, you can just spam plasma rifle stun grenade and super shotgun, or just super shotgun in general.

I’d disagree on Eternal’s level design. The key difference is that Eternal has way more moving parts than 2016 combat-wise, more than you could really teach through level design. The levels themselves are good mostly in both games.

Eternal has some levels that made me just ask why they did certain things, the early level where the flames shoot down the corridors coming to mind first. Eternal does have more than you can teach through level design for sure, but for those it could it still opts not to - did we really need to be teleported to learn how to use the chainsaw?

I think Eternal stumbles the most in teaching the lessons that the original game taught - I just can't help but wonder why they couldn't have taught them in the same way, if it's not broke and all.

I think what I find weirder is how Eternal 100% assumes you've played the original - it gives you the shotgun from the start as well as the double jump and some upgrades and the game starts off with levels and enemies reminiscent of later 2016 levels - but then after doing all this it goes back and feels the need to teleport you to learn about the smallest things.

Music in Eternal is obviously a downgrade but art design matches the original doom better though it makes the game less atmospheric but also allows for the new system of flesh actually coming off demons, giving you a visual indicator of which demons are low health and which aren't, which is clever.

Pinkies being the only enemy with weaknesses in 2016 was super weird so I'm glad Eternal fixed that. Having a base in Eternal was sick to the point where I misremembered it being in the original.

There's a lot of points to be made for both games.

IIRC Eternal was originally going to have you start with the pistol but it was so useless that they decided to just have you start with the shotgun since it at least has a distinct niche. The upgrades thing feels to me that they figured that it made more sense to hand you double jump and such as a QoL thing. So regardless of whether they were good calls or not (I think they were), those changes at least make sense from an angle that isn’t assuming you played 2016

I think even without playing the original, you can figure out how to shoot a shotgun and double jump. Teaching mechanics was clear for both games. Both have issues where certain mods are broken. for 2016, that's siege if you use insta charge glitch, or stun bomb. For eternal, lock on and energy shield are totally broken as are ice bomb, and air control. But without these, if you want to master swaps and movement, I'd say the main difference is that damage in 2016 hurts. Eternal damage, you can heal so quickly it rarely matters. And that unless you get really cramped rooms(which the base campaign doesn't usually do), The geometry and plan in every fight is essentially the same for DE: meathook in the air to pb rocket. Or pb ssg monsters from up close. 2016 movement though, takes knowing the actual geometry. And without precision bolt as your quickswap anchor, it's harder to dominate from any range. no pb ballista, no pb ssg. From here, ssg gauss is strong but it just isn't pb ssg. And you have no pair of long range semi auto hitscan for very long range. Sure, rocket kinda works at whatever range but is slow and difficult to land from afar and can blow you up at close. The DE kit takes longer to learn, but it does seem to dominate when you learn it. Another thing is that 2016's mods are altogether useable. But full auto is garbage in DE. PB is garbo if you can't swap and if you can, missiles are trash. Mobile turret does nothing. plasma is mostly a joke. For ammo, DE has a reputation of having less ammo but realistically, you have a half ammo refill at least every 20 s. There is never an issue for ammo. In 2016, at least early game, it is something to be kept in mind

DE has a lot more to learn, mechanically but when you do, it is muc easier. Not to mention that DE has definitive fodder. imps, zombies are really just there for loot. 2016 imps are there to end you

any advice on safely killing the worm bosses? Can I do anything when their shield is up. It feels like shooting the shield makes it go down faster but I am not sure. And the last two fights in "I am VEGA" would be appreciated. Should I be destroying multiple...idk coolant things... at a time or no? What is a safe route for me to pace in the train fight. For ref, no bfg, no stun bomb, no siege glitch, no air mobility rune. Everything else is allowed that I remember. mostly how to deal with the summoner in the room with the 4 coolants -- nvm found where she spawns. Thankfully, she can stop spawning lost souls. oo don't know where the second one spawns. same spot. ok so first wave is summoner + cacos. second wave has cyber mancs and pinkies. 3rd wave has baron + summoner. I think 4th wave just has a baron? The far left coolant has a weird corner. Enemies don't really come from the right. Next is figuring out what spawns the summoner on the train section

I think using the right side is best. Take the right side as a real 3d route. go along the top. drop down. walk the bottom, take the pad. Walk the top, drop down, walk the bottom, boune up

I find that they get stunned by ssg so I avoid damage that way. For the other bosses, I hit them at range, not too bad. Mostly, I'm worried about the train fight

the devs didn't know how strong pb swaps would be, but they certainly knew about the swaps from the start. heavy cannon, combat shotgun, chaingun, plasma, all have better "swap from" speeds than other weapons. ssg and ballista are slowest. I don't think that they didn't realize about the reloads.

But if we go that extreme, then why wouldn't we remove siphon as well? idk I feel like siphon is just better than rich get richer. RGR is definitely the least important on that list to me. Thing is, I don't think that RGR or powerups are unfair or disengaging from the combat loop, neither for siege generally. I'm not trying to construct the most challenging run so much as remove things that I think are unhealthy

But i know a few tips on beating the game myself, you can abuse some guns and their mods, some are really overpowered, and some rune that has infinite ammo

Air control isn't broken in 2016. Many people don't bother using it. But it's a must use for 2016 in my opinion. Makes movement alot better

hide from wall imps. Fully auto weapons are good against fodder. Late game, you'll be pretty stacked. So practice boss fights a lot, but otherwise, it's mostly the beginning that's hard. It really depends how much broken content that you want to use.

Tips on Baron of hell those demons are very difficult

if you're willing to use siege glitch, that'll take them down fast. But normal methods: as long as you're circle strafing, he'll really struggle to hit you. ssg x 2 + rocket is a decent close range swap on him. He's slow enough that you can move in and out to get the right distance for either weapon. And he's a decent chainsaw target if you need. The baron can't hit you well if you keep moving.

he telegraphs his big attack pretty well and that might require you to alter your course slightly. Coming from DE, if I singledash on cooldown and stay airborne and restack, I rarely have to worry about "dodging." This game does sometimes require you to dodge specific attacks deliberately

Tbh I find the bosses easy, but a few dumb mistakes will get you killed so practice against their attacks

Arcade mode is a great way to practice levels, imp fireballs and getting crowded by stuff like pinkies will kill you so quickly

gauss + rocket + single jumping over the blades of the cyberdemon was enough for him. Stay far. For the worm guys, I did ssg gauss the whole time -- preferring ssg first for the stun. And rocket gauss or rocket shotgun explosive shot shotgun if I ran out of plasma for the spiderdemon. Again, staying at range. but ya gotta practice how to avoid her attacks. definitely boss fights need to be practiced. agree

keep your distance(gauss rocket swap or rocket shotgun swap). jump over the first laser then crouch for the second. on The pillars are good platforms to hide from the electric. and you can shoot the pillars if you need health. The bfg trick is super effective, but using weapon wheel is kiinda cheating, so do it if you like but its clearly outside of engaging with the mechanics imo

just avoid the imps on the wall. their hitbox is jank(and their wall animation takes priority over stun). But other than that, your regular shotgun is about as decent as the weapon has been since doom2. I do think most people would admit that the base kit of "shotgun no mods" is weaker than eternal's basekit of shotgun with stickies. But this weaker state won't last all that long. You'll get every relevant weapon by the end of level 5(if you find secrets/use a guide) or level 6 otherwise.

The game is rather hard on nightmare but it's short enough that you can replay it after if you're up for the challenge after leanring the mechanics. Do be aware that NM reduces the health gained from monsters as well as increasing their damage to rather silly numbers, particularly for imps

He's protected by a argent field so it doesn't matter much. Allows for more movement end of the day. I love both suits

That's the Archvile. He actually first appeared in DOOM 2.

Archvile is one of my personal Favorite demons.

Carcasses are more annoying.

Archvile's are ez to take down. you just need to be quick. I usually blood punch, then ice bomb, hit it with a bit of microwave beam, and finish it off with a Destroyer Blade shot. Or you can one shot it with the Crucible.

just lure the demons closer to the archvile, then hit them all with the ice bomb. Remote Detonate usually helps keep them faltered.

Another popular strategy is to use ice bomb, and then spam Frag Grenade. That takes a chunk out of the archvile's health.

The goal is to keep the Archvile from summoning.

I think I've found a viable strategy. I usually crouch over a large group of demons, then throw a grenade, and mow down the rest. I usually take care of the imps first, then rip and tear the rest of them.

rocket, ssg ssg, siege glitch(instant siege). If you don't want to use insta siege(cuz it's kinda cheating), rocket ssg is your highest damage normal swap. They have a lot of health and no weaknesses to particular attacks like in DE. you just gotta hit em hard

Is it just me? Or is it so much harder to upgrade your character in 2016 than it is in Eternal? I fully maxed out the Slayer in Eternal in a single play through, while I keep having to go back to different levels just to get ONE upgrade in 2016. Please tell me I’m not alone.

the weapon on upgrades are harder and have no mastery tokens, as well as rune upgrades being a thing. It's a lot harder yeah. Not to mention that slayer taking all of the praeter tokens to fully max the suit whereas DE's slayer has 15 tokens remaining by the end of the game ||shameless|| in my UN run for 2016, I only mastered a couple key runes and the ssg. I didn't even get rem det or gauss upgraded fully. In Eternal, even on UN, I always go for a full 100 % run. All secrets and upgrades
