welp, I can confirm that indeed, DooM 2016 works on my PC and runs flawlessly
although heating up my PC a lot, but hey, some of my games do that.
and besides, its a game that came out for consoles, so my PC heating up was bound to happen

The foundry one is the classic map. There's a bridge heading to the "maze looking bit", and next to that bridge there's a platform. On that platform is a lever you can pull to open the door

2016 imps on nightmare are basically walking snipers who lead their shots and will screw you over since you don't have air control or anything of the sort early game.
Eternal imps on nightmare are the same as ITYTD imps but shoot more and do a little bit more damage
It has a hidden stat in eternal that allows you to switch off it faster
I don't use that feature in 16 OR Eternal lol, I master all weaps just for completion's sake

It's hard to choose between 16 and Eternal. They're very similar but also SO DIFFERENT. Eternal gets big big points for being so punishing. But it loses points for the amount of time it spends destroying its own continuity with confusing-ass lore. 16 has that beautiful grounded "realism" to it, but also loses points for locking you in a room and making you listen to Hayden
mods like the wind up mod for the chaingun just seem really useless

If we had the combat of Eternal + the artstyle, brutality, and story direction of 2016 we would have a masterpiece worthy of being hung above god's fireplace
Anywho. I think Eternal wins out because of the way the combat loop allows for long-ass arenas. The regenerating chainsaw and flame belch make it so if you're skilled, you can fight forever. In Doom, ammo runs out eventually

Level design is actually fine imo but it sadly gives itself to linearity which is NOT a problem just makes everything inside it kinda worse.
Environmental detail is undoubtedly worse, sure the texture quality is upped to 11 and the places are visually appealing but it feels like no one's ever been there before you. It's too sterile for a doom game.
Reiterating my point that linearity isn't bad, it's how it's utilized. Eternal and 2016 are both linear but 2016 has different branching paths, rooms with goodies, and secrets hidden off in the map rather than placing them Infront of you. Eternal does do alot of this but to a much much smaller scale leading to repeat playthroughs feeling almost exactly the same, the fast travel feature is a bandaid for people who don't explore too intensely since you can just come back and grab a secret later rather than taking your time to really observe the area.
Kinda dont like how you have to downgrade the game and use external software to increase viewmodel FOV
Comparing the games is pretty pointless though but this is just why I prefer the old over new in terms of personal enjoyment, like what you want.

"realistic", in the scope of doom's universe. argent tower is huge and intimidating, so it makes sense to force a player to scale it and feel the tension of a potential fall. what was the purpose of eternal's platforming shoehorned into every single level, where there are nonsensical mario platforms that rise and fall while you're on them, monkey bars literally everywhere, and rotating flaming blades to impede progress? a) it breaks immersion in a series that always used to be grounded in pseudo-realism, b) it often is nonsensical in terms of the overall design of the level, c) there's very little purpose to it other than artificially extending levels in inorganic ways
bruh it's DOOM. fighting is the whole reason we are here
i am saying, if every single arena in eternal features jump boosters, monkey bars, and similar architecture that allows a player to zoom around a rounded arena with similar height variations, that is far more repetitive than 2016 that mixes it up far more often with limited movement options and unique architecture

yeah, TAG1 was better. i felt the meathook trigger points in TAG2 again a bit contrived. if they had been made to act and blend more seamlessly/organically into the environment, i would've preferred that, as it was a good idea in principle, but in its execution i found it to be lazily implemented (or designed for the lowest common denominator player)

admittedly eternal's rinse and repeat approach to combat arenas, coupled with the meathook, obviously encouraged and in fact forced far more movement in combat than did 2016. so doom ended up playing more like quake than past doom iterations. doom 2016 combat could often be handled by setting up camp in a spot and controlling the spawns or influx of demons from overwhelming the player
