If you actually played the original Doom 3 back in the day, you'd know that one of the most downloaded mods was the Weapon mounted flashlights. So even in those days many players preferred having flashlight always active.
So why is it considered "bad" now in BFG edition?

Granted, the very first time i played i had no mods because i had no idea the game had mods at the time. I played the game vanilla.
The flashlight was a good mechanic but only during the first few levels. After that? it was detrimental to the game imo.
With the mod, i never felt the game got any less "scary" or "fun". In fact quite the contrary. I was having tunnel vision where i was only focusing on the areas that were lit up.
When the demons approached me from the sides...hell yeah i got scared lol.

The flashlight is one of those things that you hate at first but then get used to it and end up loving for a number of reasons
having access to a shoulder mounted version kind of ruins the point of the game which is basically "id Tech 4" 😄
for example an imp's fireball illuminates its surroundings and that's how you can aim at an imp, it's actually great stuff to bumble in the darkness in that game
if you have to put away the flashlight to shoot stuff then the game's lighting can really work its magic

That's subjective. I found it tedious after the first few levels. IIRC as you progress, you start using the flashlight less frequently because the levels were fairly well lit. Or atleast lit well enough.

One thing i will say is that they should not have increased the overall lighting of the level. A great compromise (imo) would be to keep the overall lighting the same as the original and with the shoulder/weapon mounted flashlight, have the lit area be narrow/concentrated.
Or at the very least, have a "classic experience" option in the Gameplay menu. Problem solved.

yep, exactly, that's why I don't like the BFG Edition, because of the lack of options
cause sure, you can interpret the duct tape mod as feedback and act on that (even though it's a bit "overrated" I think since people never mention its issues which tells me that it's not really used widely)
and yep, even people who use duct tape continue to play the original game and still use duct tape because they don't like the other changes
and of course BFG's modding scene is nearly non-existent so not even fans cared enough to restore the game

it does have its uses though, for example imagine there's a fly in your living room, you open the door, shoot the Doom 3 shotgun and the spread is so horrendous that no matter where the fly is it will go down

I hear that defense regularly but I dunno... have you played other horror games? I don't think Doom 3 is good in the horror department, that stuff starts out strong but since the darkness and the jumpscares are the only thing the game has going for it it gets old fairly quickly
it's a kinda solid action horror shooter but even in that category you just have better choices like Undying
to me Doom 3 was always this flawed "mood piece" I sometimes enjoy playing for its atmosphere and aesthetics but nothing more really
