map09 is oddly strict on ammo. You can check the whole map, go back to a save, reset the map, you have a lot of options
I would say that if a monster didn't spawn in or you're on a massive map and you miss 1 of 500 monsters and use IDDT to find it, whatever. But if you are simply out of ammo, you lose the uvmax
you may need to take advantage of the 21 lost soul limit and punch out pains before killing a lot of lost souls. I think the RL room is fair game but the lost souls in the bfg room take it over the edge before activating pains. If you kill pains before lost souls are killed(so pains are useless), you'll save tons of ammo

one advantage of pistol starting is that it resets your stuff so that A: you never enter maps with extremely low health and B: you know that all your gear resets so you feel more confident using ammo within that level. My first playthroughs in singlesegment, I didn't use bfg cuz I was worried of running out for future levels. Certainly, a speedrunner would plan it out, but for casual stuff, I wasn't doing that
map11 will be your first map with uv+ exclusive monsters.

I saved the invuln secret for the cyberdemon. 2 tapping him when he's in the toxic sludge is scary without invuln. You could still do it though, just have health saved

it's cruel the first time around, but it gets better on second playthroughs

E4M1 is a ballbuster for sure
E4M2 is arguably the best map
E4M3 and E4M4 are pretty much cakewalks

yeah i prob will, for my run i just lured a shotgunner in, pistol kill, take shotty, deal with the starter imps and kill more shotgunners and clean up the rest of starter room and blind fire the dark room... grab the red keycard... then grab blue keycard and then pray to god you can get to the blue gate fast enough without getting baron trapped

gzdoom gets rid of that but yeah that's annoying... when i got a port of ult doom, like a free copy idk how a friend told me about it, the version of ult doom used the up and down arrow keys to move back and forth and slowly tilt your head left or right with the other two arrow keys which was annoying af so i had to use gzdoom

Im hearing the ultimate challenge on the gba style and it sounds better
if you run fast enough into the wall on a more vanilla based port, then the code overshoots where you're actually supposed to be, and your hitbox touches the BFG, which pulls it through the wall

okay i know doom isn't meant to have jumping but since gzdoom had it i've abused it sometimes like for e4m3 where you have like a few imps and pinkys in this room that's barricaded with a window you barely can't fit? yeah there's a gap there making it impossible to get through buuuuuut... if you jump at the right time then you can instantly get through the level and not need the blue keycard, in fact you didn't need any keycard

Ribikks is a mapmaker who designs his levels primarily for hurt me plenty and strongly recommends it. Supposedly, he used to require you send him a demo of you winning on HMP before sending you an ultraviolence copy. I don't know many other mappers who primarily focus on HMP instead of UV

is heartland even "hard" or just lengthy per map? I've played through the first 6 levels with saves and never got around to finishing map07. I usually do saveless but I've streamed enough skillsaw and the maps are long. I can fool around with the new guns fer funzies every now and then
heartland is decently challenging
apparently mtpain said it was one of skillsaw's hardest wads to date
I'm playing through it casually with saves, but I'll play through it without saves eventually
it does have several explosive monsters so it can be punnishing. I've played his vanguard and Ancient Aliens. vanguard < AA for difficulty. I visited very little of valiant but it looks more challenging. Heartland is more consistently difficult I suppose but AA did have a few "meaner" sections like the saucer fights where you had arches within a space ship
map07 is quite slaughtermap-ey
at the beginning, it forces you to give up all of your guns if you were doing single-segment

So death exit is different than the e1m8 style damaging floor exit right? My understanding is that if you frickin die as you exit, then pistol start. But the damaging floor style exit will simply place you in the next map as you are the moment you drop under 20 health

is the cluster bomb launcher better or worse than bfg? it's hard to say. It seems to be stronger. It is interesting to see what another rocket weapon could be. Every other ammo type has a pair
the flamethrower looks clearly better than plasma, but the selfdamage evens it out.

actually, would to be possible to create an automatic pistol starting mechanism if you place two linedefs before a damaging floor, one that raises a wall so you can't escape the pool(or you can sink the damaging floor into the ground) and have the second linedef release a voodoo doll that eventually crosses another linedef to exit the level so you'd finish the level when you die and automatically pistol start the next map?

how come doom eternal secrets are like "okay so to find this secret go to the glowy question mark on your map to find the funny figurine" and classic doom secrets are like "okay so to find this secret you need to blow up this barrel with your chainsaw, then, hump this wall 12 times. Don't spam it, because if you do, you will not be able to complete the secret. After that, a secret lift will open up next to you. Have your rocket launcher ready because there are twelve imps at the top all stacked together. After you kill them all, a wall will open up and you will get the rocket launcher early."

cluster bomb launcher from heartland is much much stronger than rocket launcher. Maybe check out dwars' playthrough and watch him use it. It shoots one rocket that bursts into a bunch. It one-hits a baron

Using the command line requires some knowledge on cmd.exe or the terminal

I tried doing that but it just gave me a batch file which i wasn’t able to open and no further instructions

most likely the pain elemental because an arachnotron cannot ever target a pain elemental. If a PE shoots a lost soul and it hits a monster, the monster will target the lost soul and not the PE

what you consider part of the standard doom experience is super subjective. do you include doom3, doom64, do you consider ultimate doom's 4th episode, sigil, master levels, tnt+plutonia, the entirely of custom content from the past 30 years? Sigil is made by Romero of course so it gets some extra consideration but it is not retail doom

Its one of the good maps of doom 2
so many maps of doom2, that one included are a pain to uvmax. If I want to burn through that level, I can grab the plasma, take the yellow key from the cyber, the red key from the baron + imp area and leave.
But to 100% the map, I need to visit the pain elemental area for basically no items, the chainsaw trap for...a chainsaw, the slime area for absolutely nothing of importance too.

nightmare is a joke difficulty. It's doable but requires second-to-second knowledge and solid luck and excellent execution. It is only possible on select maps too, mostly vanilla stuff

For sure..i remember when playing Doom 2 as a teen i would turn on God mode and unleash all of the monsters then turn god mode back off just to battle all of the monsters at once it was pretty cool. Refueling the Base is my all time favorite i fused it with E2M2
Refueling base was designed, at least roughly, before doom1 even came out. I think it was partially a testing area but I'm not sure. it's cool that it was used later on
honestly my fav map is map29 along with monster condo (I never bother to read the map names tbh) it just feels like a trudge where you overcome the odds and definitely feels like it's prepping you for the big bad guy
now nrftl level 6 on the otherhand feels like an absolute journey especially with the fan made midipack

so instead of relying on things from previous levels, you can rely on your own skills and knowledge to pass a level

Played the first 7 maps of Alien Vendetta. Solid so far. And shoutout to Rowdy Rudy. It's a nice lil mapset, all vanilla too

Wouldn't say it's faster. Forces you to door fight. Alot of classic doom wads are far faster far more intense. It does have the illusion of speed though
it usually forces you to cover on the harder difficulties, which was what I generally played on

From the sounds of it he dropped Doom entirely for years which made it a miracle he was doing as good as he was. And then with like 5 maps left in Plutonia someone suggested he change his mouse sensitivity and he started doing better
