As somebody who's only played vanilla it was such a breathtaking experience to see all these engine enhancements and crazy things done with a 30+ year old engine
But I've never been able to replay it because whenever I tried I'd get discouraged hard

the characters are slipping like they have butter on their feet
I think they can change that now, but they decided to stick with it
not great for new comers, but good for veterans who know how best to control it

otherwise, you would use nothing but the energy blaster
the first episode looks better, sure, but the second plays a lot better
its no use having a weapon with infinite ammo if its got low damage so you never use it
I can honestly say I never used that thing after picking it up. I never have ammo issues in Golden Souls 2
I dont like 08, the rest plays ok, 10 is great
map 8 is fine, but it is a damn waste of Gutter Penny

Plutonia is my favourite, but it gets saddled with TNT
my rankings:
- Legacy of Rust (beautiful levels, feels like all eras of doom rolled into one, new enemies and weapons are fun)
- Sigil (looks great, fun gimmick, better than E1-4)
- No Rest For The Living (it's like doom 2 if it was good)
- Doom (the original)
- Plutonia (really hard but great levels, uses doom 2 enemies better than 2)
- Doom 2 (cool additions but worse levels)
- Sigil 2 (didnt iterate enough on sigil 1)
- Thy Flesh Consumed (fucked up difficulty spike)
- TNT (its just fuckin boring for most of it)
- Master Levels (mixed quality)
- Maximum Doom (need i say more)
Since you were so kind as to make a ranking, I suppose I can do the same -

Plutonia (harder, better designed levels that use the weapons and bestiary very well)

Sigil (the best Doom 1 wad I have ever played, very pretty and with super speedy combat)

No Rest for the Living (its like Doom 2 but polished to a sheen, very professionally made)

Doom 2 (maybe worse levels than Doom 1, but far more interesting ones. Also the SSG and lots of iconic enemies)

Doom 1 (gets boring after a while, but short levels and some variety near the end make it go up in the ranks)

I havent played Sigil II or LoR properly so cant really rank them, and I dont consider TFC to be a seperate thing to Doom 1
i dont really consider tfc as a separate thing either but someone used it as a separate expansion earlier so i was like "oh sure"

I dont know if I would want to rank it anyway, I dont have too strong a memory of it. Probably would put it between Doom 1 and TNT if I had to
The difficulty curve is off balance as hell, but it has some of the toughest classic Doom levels outside of Plutonia, so credit where its due
it says something about the state of doom expansions when if you think about it the bosses of Doom 1 are
Bruiser Brothers, Cyberdemon, Spiderdemon, Spiderdemon, Spiderdemon, Spiderdemon
The enemy variety is DIRE
And its only made worse by people insisting on using exactly 4 enemies in Episode 1 of their 36 map megawads and causing me to fall asleep
Sigil is special because it bucks that trend and goes out of the gate swinging
E4 should’ve been an Archvile and E6 should’ve been a unique boss
I don’t mind E5’s boss rush
there is just no need for a doom 1 mega wad
E4 having an arch vile might blur the line between 1 and 2
But since that might reduce the number of bloody doom 1 wads I'm all for it
I knowww I know and I get that but I meannn TFC had the capabilities of adding D2 stuff

TFC has a really bad difficulty curve and also some levels just aren't that great

TFC has some of my favourite Doom 1 levels, but also some stinkers
I think TFCs difficulty issues comes from the fact these were obviously tested from pistol starts.
by the end of Perfect Hatred (My favourite level), you have every weapon. Except I think the chaingun?

Compared to classic mappacks it's definitely an improvement but it has like 2 decades of mapping behind it
I think I even prefer NRFTL to LOR

I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but I'm trying to create a story co-op server using the GREZZO2 mod (port q-zandronum) with Doomseeker.
I can do it, the only problem is that I don't take damage, and even changing the damage multiplier doesn't change the situation. Does anyone have any ideas? I've attached some images (cheats are disabled, including God mode).

its maybe my favourite map in the set
the track from it is going in my "all time favourite Doom music" list. It creates a very cozy atmosphere
(which I havent made but maybe I should)
but the ice physics, the nerfed chaingunner and more astral cacos drag it down slightly

I already give X-, X and X+ an extra point in difficulty
The problem is just that these mappacks have really easy maps at the start

Hitscanners are almost universally glass cannons in Doom for a reason
they are powerful, and so they need to be easy to neutralise to compensate
the spider mastermind is the exception, and is literally the final boss of Doom 1

so an arch vile revived a cyber bruiser right next to me, I panicked, fell on an elevated platform, didnt realise there was a way to get out of there, tried to kill the cyber bruiser from down there, it rocketed me, I died

There's actually a lot. Plutonia 2 is legendarily good, 3 was a bad wad trying to capitalize on the brand, 4 and 7 are joke wads in response to 3. Then there is Plutonia Community Project 1 & 2 (I recommend 2)

It is but more rounded out in encounter design
less chaingun memey and evil dungeon master and more just harder overall
Plutonia 2 is great beccause I think because it had such a long development time it kind of turned into a huge expression of the mappers themselves rather than just copying what the Casalis did

I was quite disappointed with Plutonia 2 not really playing like Plutonia experiment
PRCP1 does but to the wad’s detriment, I just felt like I was playing plutonia 1 levels again. PRCP2 is entirely new though (except for like one level)
Playing through pl2 it feels like a genuine sequel, I have the feel the original plutonia given me while being expressed in a more personal style
I like it a lot

I round a corner, I get a rocket to the face, and I die 20 minutes into a map
I fucking love cyberdemons, I'm so excited to have mini cyberdemons throughout this wad
they are the antithesis to arch viles, which make you explicitly aware seconds before you get zapped, giving you many different counterplay options
meanwhile, fuck you rocket to the face lol you ded

The game would be a dozen times deadlier with bs fast enemy wind ups and less active sounds

Nah once you have a route the map isn't that hard
It's just very dependant on how you route through the map
lurking fear has an invuln you can use to severely mitigate the worst fight
ticket to eternity has an invul as well
ticket to eternity has like a dozen cyberdemons
its a much longer and more spread out map
an invuln in lurking fear defangs one of the few big fights
an invuln in ticket defangs one of a dozen fights
I just saved the invul for the cybers at the end of ticket
And it's honestly the only actual "fight"
The map doesn't really do fights it just sprawls monsters everywhere
if you play quick most of them die to infighting
and those monsters are dangerous enough to kill you
lurking fear really has nothing on this map

Black Ice has the hardest start
yeah hard disagree, lurking fear is managable compared to ticket
true, but you can restart most easily at the start
Ticket to Eternity is the longest one but it's not like obscenely long
and lurking fear I think just has the hardest trap
Ticket to eternity plays a lot like HR14 (City in the Clouds)
But you get more space to manoevre in the former

13th Floor is really sick though that one is super memorable

I like being put into a corridor with no way out with an annihilator and nothing to defend myself with except an SSG
And having to fight a cyberdemon for an hour every time I die is boring as piss
And I fucking loooooove an annihilator being shrouded in darkness, firing a rocket at me out of said darkness and it hitting me immediately because dragonfly decided to make us fight in a corridor the size of a pool noodle
this is a good wad that I enjoy yes

luckily for me thats like a year or more away
so I can seek therapy in the meantime
and better yet, the end of map 17 has a nice area to rocket stuff in. It almost reminded me of going down in how much fun I had

In some ways, the Doom 1 run was harder doing it because of no fighting with the cyberdemon and such.
I recall there was a video, how to beat Doom without firing a shot. Obviously E1M8 and E2M8 are very difficult but technically possible

the fucking heretic wad I had negative expectations for before playing is higher in my current estimation than eviternity
you need to have a map of the level etched into your brain or you get fucked up the ass when you let your guard down for 2.3 seconds
If a cyber baron kills me like that in map 19, I swear upon all the gods that exist or have ever existed, I am ditching that map
