map 04 has been my main suffering for the past 2 days
Gameplay styles I employed (every level also has platforming elements, but some more than others. I was also inspired by Crash Bandicoot, going for a PS1 vibe):
Level1-Typical Quake-esque fetch quest in the city
Level2-Fetch quest with a stealth aspect in the forest
Level3-Linear level on Antarctica, just make your way to the end of the stage while jumping moving platforms and fending off infected
Level4-Chase sequence, can't fight back
Level5-Medieval-style fetch/escape quest
Level6-Destroying one of the enemies' bases
Level7-A straight-up homage to Crash Bandicoot's the high road.
Level8-Underwater level, had to change my character's gravity and physics to get it to work
Level9-Another linear level with a 'floor is lava' challenge, like those classic platforming levels where you have to deal with rising lava/toxic waste and get to the top asap
Level10-A sniper section on an icebreaker, basically a scroller-type of level
Level11-A slaughtermap
Etc.
This is only a rough sketch, maybe things'll change. But yeah these are 11 maps I finished

I mean, I can totally see where you're coming from, but the 64 version doesn't look all funny and cute while running around. I understand why it doesn't, as it wouldn't fit the tone of the game, but I like the classic and Eternal design better, as well as its characterisations

I'm trying to play the total conversion mod Ashes 2063, but it isn't working with ZDL. It runs fine without it, but I need to be able to change the save file location and I don't know how to do that without ZDL.

the steam port does feel super smooth however which could be some sort of vsync technology

Guys, what are your thoughts on Legacy of Rust? Personally, I really enjoyed this expansion due to the level design, music, new guns and enemies, and even the story! The only level I really disliked was Second Coming due to the low amount of resources it posseses as well as the confusing layout (though the music is a banger), and my favourites have to be Sanguine Wastes, Coiled City and Soul Silo

Honestly I havent had a problem with input lag since the first patch so I couldn't tell you
im not sure whether i should ask this here or in modding channel, but has anyone had problems running mods in coop with kex engine? (doom + doom 2 steam release)
i was playing some eviternity coop with a friend, when we'd stumble into occasional desyncs or projectiles not being visible at all (but we can still hit enemies with them and vise versa), while that was relatively minor and usually got fixed after remaking a lobby, or magically on its own after a while
when eventually we got to map 15, game was straight unplayable, hosts game runs at 10ish fps, while other player cant see any sprites at all (monsters, projectiles, weapons, pickups, etc.) but still can interract with them (pick weapons/ammo up, even while invisible on their end), we tried switching whom hosts the game but the issues remained the same
we then tried switching to ancient aliens and playing that, but when we got to map 9 same issues started happening
side note: both of these mods, and mentioned maps work flawlessly in single player, these issues only appear in coop
is there anything we can do to address any of these issues? or at least improve the experience a little bit

you'll have much more room to actually fight there
if needed, grab the rad suit that's hidden behind a wall, where that little indent is
you can also find a chainsaw and a supercharge if you keep just opening walls in that area

Hi all! I felt like playin some modded old school Doom again and just started playing Project Brutality and it's great! Does anyone know where the option is to turn on/off the marine buddies? they should be on by default but I want to make sure I see them instead of the Invisibility Sphere like in Brutal Doom. I'm using the latest version of PB 1.3.1 I think.
I've also tried spawning them but 'summon ally' or 'summon marine' doesn't work it just says 'unknown actor or visual thinker' Maybe they took them out I'm not sure, is there any other version of the mod for download anywhere?

Not really. It's still very much idtech1. The biggest change was introducing Hexen with the doom in hexen format which brought things like polyobjects and ACS scripts. GZDoom having things like dynamic lights is a purely a change to the renderer, not some fundamental change to the engine itself. Zscript was the 2nd major change but the reason that is so powerful is it allows code to reach deeper into the engine. But GZDoom is still fundamentally, at its core, idtech1

Personally I had a few levels paused via the touch pad (on ps5) when playing doom the first time so this caused my clear times to balloon to multiple days.

gzdoom being still inherently based on id tech 1 is the reason it isn't as peformative as other 3d engines when used for more non-doom purposes
and that's a good thing! gzdoom is compatible with a fuckload of shit (or shitload of fuck, your call) and i think you'd have to sacrifice that compatibility for performance
it can be used as a general purpose game engine but it's still at its heart a doom engine and that's still its best use-case

Most people don't see ot realise that being compatible with as many Doom maps as possible (vanilla, boom, mbf etc) is the single most important design brief. Ironically this holds back performance improvements. If you want to see an engine unfettered by adherence to backwards compatibility that would be vkdoom. vkdoom will be compatible with a lot of older maps, but it's not the primary concern. The primary concerns are adding in the new features Nash needs for Disdan (his game), and performance improvements in both the renderer and netcode.

A lot of maps will break you without relying on huge enemy counts (although secrets are more than enough to make any of them easy)
And you don't need to save ammo on most maps, unless you are never using berserk
if a map gives you berserk then use it!! at least use it on pinkies
Even better if you can berserk solo barons & hell knights / revs

Best way to conserve ammo is to be efficient with the bfg (have to have it obviously), and maxmise rocket damage
Technically the rocket launcher has infinite damage potential, the bfg has a (high) damage cap
Eg, if you're fighting 2 barons it is more efficient to kill them with a bfg shot than the plasma rifle, provided you can land the bfg tracers well

The more enemies you can fit inside the damage radius, the more damage you are doing
Other big way to get more ammo efficient is to use infighting, particularly if there's a cyberdemon in the fight. Infinite ammo rocket launcher to use on my enemies? Yes please

And there is a mod file where you can have the double barrel in doom 1
The only other thing I can think of kinda say use for sorta a doom 2 experience in doom 1
Is use maps of chaos one of the versions extends the maps alil
And isn’t to overbearing with enemies
So you could sorta get that close peak experience

start with doom1, doom2. Master Levels...you might consider skipping for a while. They're kinda bad. I think sigil is a good first extracurricular wad to try after doom2. Plutonia or scythe2 are also good starters to custom stuff (I know plut is official but it wasn't made by id)

So basically it's doom 2 but you're heading back after taking out Icon. So you start in the arena from map 30 but it's all trashed from the fight and you're going back through the levels?
The other thing I can think of is in a way you start at the 'exit' and the exit is at level start?

you ALWAYS take damage in the process unless you're a strafing god and have like frame perfect punches but like, for the rest of us mere mortals its never worth the risj

if you're in such a fucked position that you can't spare 2 shells to take down a pinky

the amount of enemy encounters on most average maps ive played where trying to get into chainsaw range is anything but a death wr speedrun strat is slim to none
some mapsets just genuinely lack ammo
for example, ERASER literally has no ammo for about the first 30 minutes or so
maybe its just a map difference but deadass i usually wind up finding more shotgun shells than i can even carry so my go-to solution to every problem involves generous application of buckshot
you are basically forced into using melee to conserve what little ammo is around
shotgunners drop 4 shells, each, on every kill
even if you kill them with a shotgun its 3 shells EACH
yeah, and generally mapsets will throw much more than shotgunners at you
yeah that's what the excess shells are for
like some fights I can go from 100 all the way down to 30 shells even with perfect accuracy, and with no blockmap nonsense
i guess my point is that unless you're literally out of all ammo and are FORCED into melee the chainsaw is just straight dogshit for 99% of encounters
so you will be fighting for ammo in some WADs almost constantly
If it's just base, well yeah. Becacuse Doom 1 and 2 just throw a ton of ammo at you anyways.
Though seeing how enemies are placed (especially in Doom 1) I still will just berserk my way through a level

Pains can't spawn lost souls when you're in melee range. So it's very easy and reliable to chainsaw them, at least assuming that you aren't surrounded by other enemies

Oh I swap. I just mean like eternal’s quick swapping and that sort of stuff because I could never do it on controller
and well, situations change constantly so I could go from sniping to having to do crowd control quite quickly

It’s borderline required for the dlcs at least because playing through those on a console was a living hell. with a controller quick swapping just doesn’t really exist so it becomes so immensely tedious that it ruins the experience for me lol
Like sometimes I just want to use 1 gun for an encounter, but eternal made you use everything in your entire kit for ALL encounters and I didn’t like that

its alright i prefer the og tbh but the level design is decent and the unique aesthetic is quite fun

A spin-off is mostly for side stories during the main campaign or in between mainline games
Spin-offs also do tend to have drastically changed gameplay compared to the mainline games

I'm trying to do Nightmare run in the original DOOM, but I'm stuck on E1M4. Any tips either to get through the maze or to do the speedrunning skip
I tried using some YouTube videos, but I was left confused by the tech, so I tried brute force
Had some trouble finding a good video on how to do this skip, so I made one. Hope it helps. Remember, You have to strafe run at it and the turn at the end is the key to pulling it off. Keep trying and youll get it. Also take note that while I think you can do this jump on the Unity Ports, itll need a different set up with no dedicated strafe but...

Been doing some research and found out that the soundtrack from doom (DOS) was made on Impulse Tracker
Both Doom 1 and Doom 2 released before Impulse Tracker did
The only games to have come out afterwards were maybe Ultimate Doom and Final Doom

Impulse Tracker in general wasn't even released until 1995
saying maybe for UDoom as it also came out in 1995
I searched for the Impulse Tracker version and it shows the GBA port

Doom + Doom II has online multiplayer, but I think that’s dead. You’d probably have better luck with some of the multiplayer source ports like ZDaemon or Odamex or whatever

approximation mostly, doom 2 didnt have many of those if at all, usually its easy to remember how many ive killed if ive loaded a save. if i dont die then its much easier because i can just count the bodies in an area if i didnt check the enemy count prior
plutonia might be different though so ill try to keep track of the kill count
Makes sense. Plutonia may be a bit harder to keep up with at times (especially because they like hiding Chaingunners behind semi-solid walls above the floor), but it should still be doable in this way.

DOOM + DOOM II multiplayer isn't dead. There aren't generally that many lobbies open at a time, but it's certainly not dead. Plenty of deathmatching and co-op action going on daily.

Pressing forwards sets your forward move speed at 50. Your sideways movement is independent and maxes out at 40 (by holding the strafe key and simultaniously holding camera right and strafe right, it'll max out at 50).
Then it's literally just pythagorean theorem to determine the diagonal movement
