Yes, the Steam version does have co-op for maps. It's okay, mainly hindered by the horrendous netcode of that port.

Did the math. Both of the Unity ports have 557 levels total. If you were to play them on each difficulty individually, you would go through 2785 levels. If you also want to play through them again with a buddy, also on each difficulty mode, you would end up with 5570 levels. If you wanted to play it again with 3 players, then with 4, you would end up with 11140 levels played total. Each level has a deathmatch mode, in which you can select a frag limit option (with 5 options) and a time limit option (with 13 options). Each level has 65 options, meaning that if you were to want to play every single possible level in the Unity ports, you would play a total of 47345 levels. If you were held at gunpoint and forced to play through every single level like this within a month, and you averaged out about a minute per level, you would fall short of the due date by 3545 minutes, which is equal to 2,461806 days.
Iwad names aren't exactly nice/plain text for players to easily recognize, they're just the game data files

If you want to go down to every little detail you could cook up a combination of health + armor + ammo + weapons you can have while finishing the map with each specific time and specific item, kill, and secret count, and we'd be here all day. This is simplifying it to values the player can actually control

The lowest and highests difficulties just double weapon/ammo pickups. Nightmare also gets respawns.
The only difference between I'm too young to die & Hey not too rough is the former doubles bullet/shell/health pickups.
Enemy and item placements will remain the same.

Good thing they get stunlocked pretty easy though so the chaingun is honestly best for them if you can start shooting before they get a lost soul on you
Enemies like them and the Arch-Vile I genuinely save the plasma rifle for if I can

i mainly use the ssg against pain elementals, and when they're dead, i chaingun all the remaining lost souls
chaingunning pain elementals is wasteful of bullets, because you can consistently drop them with the ssg in 3-4 shots
With pain elementals u just gotta try and get into melee range with them so they cant spawn lost souls. Then if you can position yourself so they also act as a meatshield you're golden

I'm thinking that's more of a testament to the fact the SSG is objectively broken and shoots 3 shells worth of pellets while only expending 2
To be fair though, a "balanced" SSG feels very meh
it's difficult to imagine an ssg only firing 14 pellets instead of 20
I've done it in zdoom and it's pretty underwhelming, leaving it behind the damage output of the regular shotty since that reloads faster
I get the feeling they experimented some with the SSG early on before deciding how it should work and how they should challenge players using it
20 pellets feels like a specific choice
Especially as it's the only gun in the og games with vertical spread
It's funny they did that as this allows pellets to miss vertically from a medium range, whereas the regular shotgun is still goated for long distance because it can't miss vertically
I think the plasma rifle is still the best weapon behind the BFG
Too many times I've played the SSG lottery with the Arch-Vile and not stunned them, whereas the plasma rifle just melts them
PR stunlocks just about everything
Army of Darkness Doom manages to get away with a burst shot of two SG blasts since its reloads even faster than Doom 2's SSG, if I recall correctly
For a mod from the late 90s that one is oddly really really good

Shells are extremely plentiful, it won't cause self damage, and again uses only 2 shells despite firing the same amount of pellets that the regular shotgun would fire with 3 shots, this is not a topic of debate
The SSG is inherently overpowered enough that people often avoid giving it too early because that just makes all custom maps an SSG fest
Telefrag is the strongest element in the universe, it can even kill eldritch outer gods
I get that it's stronger than the shotgun. But being better than another weapon an overpowered weapon does not make
Let me guess, you put an SSG in the first room of your custom maps
It can be appropriate depending on the monsters and ammo present
If it's a relatively smaller map with weaker enemies, especially grouped shotgunners, yeah it's too strong. It depends. But, the ssg is fairly middle of the road. It's only slightly stronger the the chaingun with worse stun and range

on boom and above, you can do that
I dont blame you tbh, the normal shotgun has its own uses even when you have the super and its not convenient having to press twice and wait longer when its needed
You have to put the 3 as a higher weapon priority than 9 though within the weap settings
I have half the arsenal bound to mouse buttons bc frankly I prefer not using the number keys for anything
Nothing to do with the number keys. The keybinds you pick don't matter. What I mean is the weapon priority list which is an option in the dsda settings.

It's possible they'll rotate every so often, I don't think there's any particular timeline
I love how the game confuses you in ways that makes exploration more fun or replayable. Few games do that these days. I only saw it in Dead rising and gta 5 at latest.

A lot of these that require map editing to run in gzdoom sound like they were designed for a different source port
When they give you fifty big cell packs and hardly no other ammo there isn't much of a choice, especially in that last level where they trap you inside a small cage and make you fight monsters

Custom mappers have this weird mindset that they can make a crap slaughtermap filled to the brim with revenants and hellknights and claim that others just don't "get" slaughtermaps if they don't think it's fun, then recommend weapon mods that entirely trivialize the game when pressed about the balancing of their maps
can not imagine playing slaughter w/ out OBLITERATOR guns
It's wild to me when joke weapon mods like Zharkov Goes to the Store are more balanced than weapon resource wads, when the former is about playing as a mentally disabled man who can throw his arms off

I gotta say, as pivotal as people say Brutal Doom is for adding executions, modern Doom does the concept so much better

There are very few mapsets that don't work with gzdoom. Any maps that use vanilla hacks like miko portals won't work (because gzdoom 'fixes' the bug that allows these)

Unity quite literally has no unique content, besides some texture changes
KEX does have LoR, but that can be played in any MBF21-compat source port

you have to use proton, but it will let you install it
steam will actually let you install any game on linux and try to launch it with proton, it just might not work lol

fps drops while using lotsa heavy mods
In my experience, gore mods in general cause extremely poor performance and will cause crashing or extreme lag with other custom maps for gzdoom
And they just look eh tbh
People often really overdo it yeah
A bunch of cloudy png graphics looks and runs worse at a large scale than a drippy blood sprite and a couple of gib chunks
Gore mods also make it impossible to use the console command "kill monsters" because 99% of people won't give a clean xdeath state to monsters at massively negative HP values, so using that command just freezes your computer as gzdoom attempts to parse all the Decorate physics
Gore mods are so incredibly amateurish in general that the very concept usually turns me off

I hear Zandronum is the form of GZDoom that supports connection to servers for multiplayer
I really don't know enough about it though myself because I haven't actually been modding for several years

but in classic doom I keep switching weapons all the time, in dark ages I just used the super shotgun 24/7
I think that's largely because of the ways that the modern and old games give you ammo, there's a finite amount in the classic games so you have to choose what to use and what to save
The newer games usually give you every type of ammo in each instance that they grant ammo, which is when you kill demons under certain conditions
If you didn't always get every type of ammo in the new games, it would urge players to use specific weapons more than just making demons resistant to certain damage types, and limit them from using other weapons

It's because of how they can't use the red cross, so they swapped it out for a pill from 2006 onwards; replaced it with a green cross later on because they thought it looks better

My guess is it's something to do with modern FPS numbers + pixel/sprite graphics confusing my brain a bit but I don't know for sure.

newest version not opening it through dragging the file into gzdoom.exe
4.8.0 displaying an error: Script error, "myhouse.pk3:decorate" line 614: "INVISIBLEINMIRRORS" is an unknown flag (with all rendering engines, brightlights on/off etc)
and booting up .wav version only displayed the menu screen and booted up regular doom 1 levels

Sort of, Eternal is a little like a Doom II to Doom 2016, but it also did a lot of work to establish Sentinel locations, so it has a unique kind of landscape across its maps compared to other dooms
Generally it appears more open but a lot of that is set dressing whereas i feel that the arena based combat feels more like fighting demons in a DM map designed to allow a wave-based invasion mode
Doom 1, II, 64, and 2016 all still more or less focused on fighting demons along the way during exploration, but 2016 also seems inspired by Doom 3 choosing to lock players in to areas sometimes to fight a larger battle, which has essentially become the norm for the franchise now

The chaingun I found to be good at that, it stuns demons
if you know how to move, the damage is either negliable or non existant
Thing is that it kills too slow
The RL is much better to get rid of an overwhelming horde
doom 64 is where the chaingun shines
before that game it's just sort of there for smaller enemies

Some of the classic guns are a little stiff
I think it works to their favor since they’re all contextually powerful and imperfect. It’s not really all like Halo where the weapons are strong tactile and individual units. Using the wrong weapon at the wrong time is usually lethal in Classic Doom.
Aside from like the chainsaw which is just actually useless
And berserk can feel a bit unwieldy too those are the two cases that I think are kinda bad
It's frustrating with poorly balanced slaughtermaps
Chainsaw is actually great in tight corridors against melee enemies
Especially lost souls
I usually just adjust some things like make the pistol shoot a bit faster if you tap it so it's more useful, and the cooldown timer on the regular shotgun not quite as long so it's more useful against infrequent enemies in hallways
Just qol stuff like that
Tbf that tends to be the fault with the mappers
Slaughtermaps do need extra care in order to balance
And yeah I tend to be in favor of pistol buffs especially as I’ve gotten more in the habit of pistol starting

Sigil 2’s been around even before Doom 1 + 2

I wish I could’ve picked up the floppy disk version of it, but it sold out before I even noticed preorders were out

Tbh, when I first got into the doom franchise. I always thought John Romero was a traditional game dev in the sense that he worked on doom 1, 2, and final doom, then he himself never did anything with the series again. All I knew was he was the main guy behind the first two. So I never bothered to look into anything else he did.
I didn’t even know there were episodes after final doom until the doom 1 and 2 were combined on steam.
Romero didn’t even work on Final Doom
I think the last Doom thing he worked on prior to Quake was Doom 2
