A big thing that helps fall in love with doom 3, listen to the details around you
Notice how busy the radio communications is and how it slowly gets less and less active to the point you never hear from it again

I bought both versions on Xbox a long time ago, but I am not getting updated versions. I even wrote to Microsoft support, but they said that they had no idea that they should contact Bethesda support, but they were silent. Unity freezes for me sometimes, but both aren't as slow as on X360. Loading times there were instant, but the melting screen effect was soooo slow

quake64 was added to the Q1 addons list. PSXdoom is a similar type of thing. Slightly modified levels and lighting

Brutal works with just the basic set of weaponry/OG game stuff yeah
There is another similar mod called project brutality, maybe that one would show some better results if you're trying to frankenstein stuff together

as the new port (and Unity) have auto SR50, meaning when you strafe run you always run at top speed

You can put them in the /rerelease folder of the Ultimate Doom folder (when you inspect the local files.) Put them in that folder by the .exe, and then you can use the -file command to load your WAD. I like to make shortcuts on Steam for them.

Most of it you'll have to wait for. However you can edit the Common.kpf file on PC to fix the MIDI playback to sound more like the SC-55 soundfont.

Go into the /rerelease folder. Go to Common.kpf. Open it with a .zip app, like 7zip. Go to the GUS folder, then the "instruments" folder. Delete all the files in there, and replace them with the files in this .zip I'm sending you:

This will make the game sound a lot better when you select the "midi synth" option in the options menu.
It's not perfect, but it's like 90% like the soundfont you'll want - it's not better than the "Original" option for IWADs, but it's fantastic for PWADs since they have no .ogg files bundled with them. If you don't slap this on, it'll sound like shit.

"Original" plays .ogg recordings of the songs, played through the SC-55 soundfont. So it's not playing midis, it's playing recordings of midis.
"Midi Synth" plays the midis natively through GUS. This is how the game sounded to some players in the 90s.
Nowadays though in most source ports the soundfonts they offer will be closer to how the songs were supposed to sound. This one can't because they can't just license the Roland soundfont for a paid product - they can only have recordings of the music.
Ah alr. So midi synth is the way to go for most of it, since they aren't just relying on recordings
For the IWADs you'll want "Original." Those are the most faithful versions of the songs. But this literally isn't available on PWADs, that's what the "Fallback" option is for - it'll fall back to that when you play a PWAD.

So the ideal setting is to select "Original" (or "Remix") for the IWADs, and have "MIDI Synth" for the fallback. It'll play the normal stuff for the IWADs, then play that new Roland GUS patch I have you for mods.

The IDKFA option is really good and I've loved using it recently, but it's only available for Doom 1-2 - that leaves deciding what to do for the Final Doom stuff, or Legacy of Rust.
Would love to have all of them with the midis/originals but the volume mixing is really weird for anything besides the IDKFA osts for some reason

It's because the .ogg recordings are too quiet for Doom 1-2. IIRC they're at the right volume for everything else. If you want everything to sound consistent, then just select "MIDI Synth" and leave it at that - it'll play everything with that same Roland GUS patch, and it'll all be at the same normal volume.

The only weird sound problems I've had with the Roland GUS patch is that the Plutonia MIDI pack song Death Mask has some weird static in it. It's fine otherwise, and that's a mod anyway, so whatever.

A guide to this: Look up the mod. If it says it needs GzDoom to run, it won't run on this port. This port mainly only supports vanilla shit, up to Boom and MBF21.
GzDoom is barely even a Doom source port at this point - it's advanced enough that "an entirely different engine that happens to run Doom" is more apt now.

If something needs GzDoom to run, it's using features and commands that are simply impossible in a port like this - one that is focused on demo compatibility, which GzDoom absolutely is not.

It's just a minor update tweaking the mod uploader. Top Subscribers are now the default, its menu's a little snappier, maybe multiplayer stuff.

The censorship of the Wolfenstein levels in the BFG edition of doom 2 is kinda lazy

All they did was completely remove any texture with anything related to Nazis and replace the SS soldiers with normal zombie men
They also changed the level names for some reason and replaced the music with other doom 2 tracks
Wouldn't keeping the level names imply what they are trying to censor

id's older games before DOOM aren't only Wolf, it'd be easy for someone to assume it could be Commander Keen style or something
Censorship of this type was just about always in an effort to satisfy a former German law so the game could be sold internationally without changes. This law is no longer in effect. It makes sense to change the name if it's no longer wolf themed or at the very least to give a diff name to a diff thing. Wolfenstein being a series in Germany, even when the law was in effect suggests that no, they were not censoring the name itself
Honestly the one exception I can think of where a studio "covered up" nazi iconography other than "I want my game to be able to be sold in Germany without making a new version" is e1m4 because Romero's linedefs looked like a swastika because he was (less obviously) referencing Wolfenstein. Understandably, a rando symbol is less clearly a reference than a whole Wolfenstein level. A vet asked him to change it. I imagine Romero was like "dang not everyone played wolfenstein lmao my a off"

The recent console update has screwed up the game so badly. Mods now don't work half the time on PS5.
@jade solstice The Valiant mod is the same way as Ancient Aliens. If i try loading a save it says i don't have the right mod installed when i do and now with the recent console update (I play on PS5 and Xbox) a ton of mods don't work at all including Base Ganymeade which is an official one.
Ancient Aliens is now broken too, saving and loading says "You do not have the proper add-on installed" when i do
None of the DBP wads work now either on console when they did prior to the update.

ik this is a very old game and theres some clunk we gotta forgive
in Boom(and higher comp levels), running out of ammo autoswap is an optional setting. Unfortunately, swap on pickup is all the time. You can start the swap earlier by clicking onto a weapon a little before the pickup itself and then click again to pick what you want thereby picking what you want and potentially pacing the dead time better
im fine with out of ammo swap cause it makes sense
but swapping a ssg to a shotgun doesnt at all lmao
also it cancels your firing action on pickup which is the cherry on top

Hey I got a question about crispy doom. I’ve gotten it working before on chrome os (using Linux) and just got a new chrome book but when trying to launch it, it asks for my iWAD file. I put my copy of the doom.wad in the home directory as well as the crispy doom folder but it still isn’t working. Is there somewhere else I should put the file? Or is there something else I have to do that I’m forgetting?
I think this is the right channel but there’s also a chance this is the entirely wrong server so if that’s the case just tell me :))

you can shove the IWAD in the same directory Crispy Doom is (assuming you downloaded the binaries online and not through a package manager)

DBP 64: The Vast Silence is quite cool being straight up DOOM 64 themed and reusing its sprites, assets, designs, weapons, and sounds and having DOOM 64 looking Revenants and Archviles.
Though. I do have one problem with it. The lighting and colors are a bit bootlegged and washed out compared to ACTUAL DOOM 64.
Then D64 style Revenants and Archviles and Chaingunnners are phenomenal sprites though
Even if they did that it’d either not run well on consoles or most mods still wouldn’t work as it’s still limited to the controller

with my usual control scheme, I fit all (well I do the usual double bind fist/saw and sg/ssg even on boom and above you can set to distinct non-overlapping keys by ||changing your weapon pref order to have 3 above 9(so the shotgun key maps to the shotgun instead of the ssg) and 1 above 8 so fist is selected before chainsaw))|| of the usual doom weapons and strafe, and use, and pause, and map, and still have four keys remaining. In dire straits, I could debind map and strafe and pause from the controller itself

The moment they hit you, 90% of your health is gone.
Chaingunnners may be hitscan, but their damage and speed is a lot lower
Also plus there's already Chaingunners in there as well

For me , things are disappearing from play list, despite still appearing on subscribed.
And then things randomly get redownloaded on a random time of day
Basically since the last update on console for the KEX port, some mods will not load or more commonly will start up, but when you save then try to load the save, it will crash the game and say you don’t have the mod installed
I also had the issue of it being in the play list, but I can’t start it up at all and have to unsubscribe and resubscribe

one thing I notice that I'm getting too used to those slaughtermaps is when I see the remaining monsters count and say "oh, there's 200 left, nothing special"
when a lot of wads don't have 200 monsters on a single level, let alone a single fight that goes into the thousands

I beat the first 10 of DOOM 2's Master Levels and good God they are insufferable
Started off alright but a lot of them later on feel like mazes with obscure solutions, and Black Tower meshes that with being the most frustrating as shit level so far

I've been defeated now, quick saved under a crusher in a Master Level
After getting through stuff like Black Tower, Express Elevator From Hell, and that goddamn yellow key in one level, I'm feeling depressed

I kinda hope that they stop including MLs in future releases. Fan stuff for doom is awesome. It's just that ID bought this random set of 21 maps a million years ago so now they're fully baptized official content whose sole job is to sour the taste of people trying fan-made levels

Those and the Xbox levels make me actually hate fanmade DOOM stuff since they're always having their level difficulty raised through the roof of the goddamn Burj Khalifa
Actually, Sewers and Betray are more about horrible level design but I digress
Final DOOM maps also at least feel more like competent levels even with their f*tish for Chaingunners and Revenants

While fan levels absolutely have the potential to be really hard -- you don't have to play those. There are tons of chill custom sets out there (and HNTR + HMP exist)
If you want advice from a fellow savescummer, if you ever want to quicksave: stand still and wait 5 seconds

I never played the Master Levels tbh. But I liked Plutonia and Legacy of Rust for official stuff which are hard

Obv if something attacks you within those 5 seconds, then you don't quicksave at all until the threat is dealt with
oh yeah I never use "quicksaves". Just do a manual save and keep a rotation of saves
Yeah having multiple proper saves is safer. But for convenience sake it's nice to have quicksave/load at the press of a button
in theory, I'm blowing up my machine by storing probably thousands of saves from different wads(DSDA stores saves separately depending on wads), but also doom saves are miniscule
I'll proper/hard save at the beginning of a mission but that's usually it until the next one
Can't imagine you'd be wasting much space even with hundreds of saves when doom itself is so small, surely saves are even smaller
Iirc you can even upload the entire wad through discord without the boosted nitro file size it's so small
Actually, how big can a doom save even get? I imagine you'd have to have all weapons + ammo + keys, but what else. Does map size affect saves?
The state of sectors and linedefs needs to be accounted for. All monsters and what exact state they're in. Any current powerups and their associated timers. All projectiles and their states. I wouldn't be surprised if a save is bigger than the map
I have ~200 saves in ZDOOM and it lags when I try to save now lmaooo

Just played through the pit in chocolate doom which has the lost soul limit
which means pain elementals cant spawn lost souls unless u go kill the ones in the secret BFG area
I really hope they fix the whole modding thing/situation , constant crashes and soft locks, as well as multiplayer items automatically making it nightmare randomly.

i havent really had any problems playing mods but the wad browser really needs some improvements

Apparently you're still subscribed to most of them (checking the mod searcher website shows it). They just don't download and be playable anymore for some reason
