humble blaze
#

Is it hard?

vale gyro
#

Same with Tangerine Nightmare

#

Eh, not really

#

Though I natively play on HMP

#

As it’s usually my most balanced skill level

humble blaze
#

Why did you get scared off then?

#

I've been playing on UV.

vale gyro
#

Ok

#

Not really scared off, more of getting “doomed out”

#

Just the first thing that came to mind

#

I only really get scared off for a bit when enemy counts get too high for my personal liking

humble blaze
#

They probably like the freelook or something quite a bit more.

#

That's kind of funny

#

Even though it's not hard

vale gyro
#

Usually when a map set that I consider a bit above my skill level has a higher count than usual

#

Tangerine Nightmare’s final map for example

#

Currently just taking a bit of a break from the WAD due to it

humble blaze
#

ah

#

I didn't really know what Tangerine Nightmare was, I mean I'm new to this.

#

It's a PWAD

#

What is a PWAD?

#

Well, I guessed it was a wad

vale gyro
humble blaze
#

Well, I thank you very much for all of your help and information man!

#

I will just continue on with the Unity ports then, unless I need another.

#

@vale gyro

#

Have a good evening, or whatever time it is for you @vale gyro lol.

#

@vale gyro What would be your favorite port to just play through the main game on?

humble blaze
vale gyro
#

First thing I’ve used

#

And it’s the port you need to use on mobile (on IOS at least)

humble blaze
#

What do you like about it over Unity?

vale gyro
#

Gimme a second to write it..

humble blaze
#

You're good

vale gyro
#
  • Right amount of pixels
  • 1:1 Movement
  • The ability for it to run external maps
  • It runs 20x better
  • Colored Blood
  • Bright Maps
  • Cleaner Menu
#

And that’s just what I could think of at the top of my head

humble blaze
#

Oh, the blood lol

#

Someone else talked about that too

humble blaze
vale gyro
humble blaze
vale gyro
#

It does have widescreen + minimal hud options

#

And in Unity, a strat called SR50 is automatically done

#

Which isn’t normal

humble blaze
#

Yeah, I've heard about that.

vale gyro
vale gyro
humble blaze
#

I mean, there are pixelated edges on like the demons.

vale gyro
#

Still not it

humble blaze
#

yeah

vale gyro
#

The demons are sprites, so of course they do

humble blaze
#

yep

vale gyro
#

It’s hard to explain, really

#

It’s nothing but personal preference

humble blaze
#

So, why don't I play Crispy Doom LOL?

#

Sounds great

vale gyro
#

You need to know the command line or use a doom launcher to use other source ports

#

Plus have access to the IWADs

humble blaze
vale gyro
#

That’s basically it

#

You need the IWADs, though

#

If you were using Steam or GOG it’s be easy

humble blaze
#

I found something called doom.wad?

vale gyro
#

I can’t tell you how to get them because of the fact your using Xbox App

vale gyro
#

exactly what you need

#

Once you put Doom2 into the port, Doom2 becomes the default and you’ll need the command line to change the IWAD on startup

humble blaze
#

okay?

#

You want me to play Crispy Doom instead of Unity don't you lol?

vale gyro
#

Not really

#

I’m just giving you a brief, pretty much

humble blaze
#

You think it's more fun.

vale gyro
#

For me personally, yes

#

For you, not sure

humble blaze
#

Seems like it would be

vale gyro
#

As you’ve said, you’re mostly happy with Unity

#

For you, you’ll see practically 0 difference between the two except with menus

humble blaze
humble blaze
vale gyro
#

That’s one thing

#

Another thing is the stuff I’ve mentioned with that list I’ve made

humble blaze
#

How does it run so much better?

vale gyro
#

Visibly, not at all

humble blaze
#

I mean, the Unity port runs just fine for me, so...

vale gyro
#

Resource wise, it uses a bit less

humble blaze
#

weird

vale gyro
#

Which was important for me back when I was using my laptop

humble blaze
#

ah

#

Probably a big reason

vale gyro
#

My laptop (even now when it runs Linux) is still kinda slow

humble blaze
#

oof

vale gyro
#

You know it’s bad if it still has some performance issues on Linux

humble blaze
#

yeah

#

You said it looks better, I want mine to look better lol.

vale gyro
#

Looks better in my opinion

humble blaze
#

yep

vale gyro
#

The colored blood and brightmaps are pretty cool though

humble blaze
#

definitely

#

Dang, I feel like I should play Crispy Doom now then since it's not to hard to set up.

vale gyro
#

If you wanted to install it

#

There are 2 main ways on Windows (not including building from source)

#

Downloading the daily build over at the Chocolate Doom wiki (if you want bleeding-edge)

#

Or get the most recent stable release at the GitHub page

humble blaze
#

Now I just feel like I can't afford not to lol.

vale gyro
#

If you really wanted to build from source, there’s a tutorial on the GitHub

#

That’s the bleeding-edge of bleeding-edge pretty to much

humble blaze
#

woah woah woah

vale gyro
#

But it’s the most complicated

#

Literally no point for an average user

#

Best bet is to get the most stable release

humble blaze
#

@vale gyro Alright, I'll go with Crispy Doom if I can figure it out. You convinced me lol.

vale gyro
#

A run-down for setup

#

Open the setup executable for some of the more basic setup like controls

#

And then open the Crispiness Menu in-game for things like colored blood, display settings, etc.

humble blaze
#

Alright

#

I'm like in the middle of a level right now Doom, I played it like a week ago.

#

Will I need to start a new save from the beginning of that level and lose my guns?

vale gyro
#

I say keep using Unity with the episode your playing

#

Or map if you’re doing Doom2

humble blaze
#

So I don't lose my guns

#

I'm in the second episode of Doom I I'm pretty sure.

vale gyro
#

Finish the episode

#

Then do the other 2 in Crispy

#

Also, just a tip

humble blaze
#

And Doom II in Crispy

vale gyro
#

Play Doom 2 before Episode 4

#

Episode 4 was released after Doom 2’s release and can be even harder than Doom 2 in some cases

humble blaze
#

Does that really matter?

#

It will be easier to just play the fourth episode in the flow of things I think.

#

Albeit I can do that

vale gyro
#

I’m being serious (kinda)

humble blaze
#

I will

vale gyro
#

E4 is hard as balls, except its final fight

#

That map was easy as hell lol

#

Almost easier than the bruiser brothers

humble blaze
#

Yeah, I've heard two maps in E4 are quite difficult.

vale gyro
#

Yeah

humble blaze
#

And I don't know the bruiser brothers.

vale gyro
#

Thank Romero for one of them

vale gyro
#

The two Barons of Hell

#

Also just a bit of trivia, you technically can’t buy Doom 1 anymore

#

You can only buy Ultimate Doom

humble blaze
#

Yep

#

I'm just playing the games through game pass.

vale gyro
#

Ah

#

I’ve straight up bought Doom 1.. more times than I’d like to admit

humble blaze
vale gyro
#

It’s not really

vale gyro
#

It’s considered a boss fight

#

But not by the community

humble blaze
#

Is there quick save in Crispy Doom?

#

@vale gyro

vale gyro
#

I can’t tell you for sure as I don’t use quick saves at all

#

In any port

humble blaze
#

May I ask why?

vale gyro
#

I do per fight saves mainly

#

Per level saves if I know the wad

humble blaze
#

Isn't just hitting a button still easier, though?

#

Or, a key

vale gyro
#

I can make a full save quicker at this point

smoky gorge
#

Anybody know a way to set a .ini file in the command line while running ZDL?

vale gyro
smoky gorge
#

Dragging one onto the EXE loads it just fine, but trying to use the command line doesn't work

vale gyro
#

I don’t use ZDL, sadly

humble blaze
vale gyro
#

And even then, whatever

#

I’ve never utilized quick saves in any other game other than games that crash often

humble blaze
#

Wouldn't it be nicer to just hit a function key or nah?

#

@vale gyro

vale gyro
#

if you use autosaves really often, keys closer to your WASD may be helpful

#

F key is too close imo

#

could accidentally hit it while moving

humble blaze
#

Definitely

#

It is risky

vale gyro
#

you’re most likely not listing the full path in the command line

smoky gorge
vale gyro
#

got no other ideas except there may be some argument you have to pass in

humble blaze
#

@vale gyro But I was asking isn't having a quick save function key nicer than full saving?

vale gyro
humble blaze
#

Yeah, that makes sense

vale gyro
#

as some programs can decipher files being dragged onto it and make special exceptions for it

#

mind you, this is coming from a person who’s only familiar with .NET applications work in that regard

#

could be different for other languages or frameworks

humble blaze
#

@vale gyro Okay, I'll finish up this episode, then switch to Crispy Doom for the third, play Crispy Doom II, episode four of Doom I, and then I'm off to Doom 64. Thanks a ton man, I truly appreciate it! Have a nice evening!

vale gyro
#

SIGIL 1 and 2 respectively

#

both are good, played them both

#

I even own a physical copy of 2

humble blaze
#

Wow

#

So I just download these for free?

vale gyro
#

you can

#

or buy the Buckethead (1) and THORR (2) alt soundtracks

#

I heard Crispy has SIGIL 2 support finally but I can’t remember

humble blaze
#

Do you think it's worth my time to play both of them?

vale gyro
#

only if you want the alt soundtracks

#

they’re otherwise both the same experience

humble blaze
#

So, you recommend I play one?

vale gyro
#

yeah

humble blaze
#

Which?

vale gyro
#

1 first

#

as 2 assumes you’ve played 1

#

they’re called the unofficial 5th and 6th episodes as they’re made by the John Romero

humble blaze
#

So skipping 2 is fine, I should only play 1?

vale gyro
#

you could just play 1, sure

#

2 is just as good imo

humble blaze
#

So, you think I should play both then?

vale gyro
#

pretty much

humble blaze
#

Okay, fine lol

vale gyro
#

after Episode 3 or 4, your choose

#

or anytime you want pretty much

#

they’re just map packs for Doom 1 pretty much

humble blaze
#

What time in my Doom journey do you think I should play them?

vale gyro
#

when you think you’re ready

#

but here’s a good warning

#

play them on HMP

#

especially 2

humble blaze
#

And you haven't play Plutonia?

vale gyro
#

as Romero pulled the same stuff he’s always had in SIGIL

vale gyro
#

you want a spoiler for 2 on why you should play them on HMP?

humble blaze
#

sure

vale gyro
#

||Sigil 2 on UV has a cyber demon on every single map||

humble blaze
#

When do you first fight one in Doom I, do you know?

#

I don't think I have yet.

humble blaze
vale gyro
#

EXM8 is always the boss map for every Episode

#

EXM9 is the secret map for every episode

humble blaze
#

I'm on E2M6: Halls of the Damned

vale gyro
#

so 2 more maps

#

also another thing

#

don’t use the rocket laucher

humble blaze
#

I'm not playing now, though

humble blaze
#

I mean you can blow yourself up lol.

vale gyro
#

you’ll face rocket yourself and even then the cyber has splash damage immunity

humble blaze
#

okay

#

What did you think of Plutonia?

vale gyro
#

it’s hard

#

for the little I did

#

not too hard

humble blaze
#

Will you play the rest, though?

vale gyro
#

at the same time I was at like map 3

vale gyro
humble blaze
#

So do you think it would be fine if I finished E2, E3, then did E5 and E6?

#

then doom 2

#

E4

vale gyro
#

and maybe after I’m done doing my UV playthrough of episodes 1-4

humble blaze
#

I think it would be better to end off the classic Dooms with it, though.

vale gyro
#

I did all 4 episodes in one go personally

humble blaze
#

So E2, E3, Doom 2, Plutonia, E4, E5, and E6?

humble blaze
vale gyro
#

I’ve done all 4 episodes plus both Sigils

humble blaze
#

I was saying do you wish you haven't played E4 yet?

vale gyro
#

sorta

#

it did help increase my skill

#

at the same time

#

it was painful

humble blaze
#

I do kind of just want to do E2, E3, E4, E5, E6, Doom 2, Plutonia.

#

But I'll do the way you suggested.

humble blaze
#

I'll end it all off with Sigil I and II.

#

Lol, I don't know what to do

vale gyro
#

you could always just take a break from an episode if you get too frustrated

humble blaze
#

Have a plan to start with, push through.

#

lol

humble blaze
vale gyro
#

I usually play another map set to get my skill up slightly beforehand

#

like what I’m doing with Doom 2

#

wanted to test my skills, so I was playing through Tangerine Nightmare

humble blaze
#

ah

#

You recommend I play Doom 2 before E4, though. So I will.

#

And I'll end it off with Sigil I and II like I said.

#

And I'll do Plutonia before E4.

#

alright

#

I think I've had enough of this.

It sorta does with the skies being used to split up sections into episodes

#

Hi there fellow Doomers! First timer here on this server. Would you guys recommend DSDA Doom for someone who only used GZDoom and not a speedrunner at all?:)

#

Just for the sake of keeping the game vanilla and crispy, i know the Unity port pretty much gives you that vibe, but i'd like to try out wads and have a vanilla experience

vale gyro
#

Best thing I personally could tell you is to try it out

honest grove
#

Maybe i should, i would play crispy or chocolate but rebinding the keys are impossible, im left handed and use the arrows and numpad, but the options take the numpad as arrows and command keys so when i bind idk rocket lancher for #4 it will bind it as left arrow

hexed escarp

yeah, there should be a button on your keyboard called num or numlock

honest grove
#

Well, duh i know that but it still behaves the same if numpad is on

#

Besides, numpad is always turned on

cosmic pagoda

you must have weird keyboard then, I got both arrow keys and numpad bindings and they are different keys

honest grove
#

Idk on crispy and chocolate i dont have an option to change controls in game only on a seperate dos options menu

#

With the blue background, and it doesnt want to register numpads as number

#

So i deleted it and went back to gzdoom

#

But if dsda allows me to change it maybe im gonna give that one a shot

vale gyro
#

When I tested it in Woof! to make sure it wasn't me just being stupid, it does not have this issue

#

So not being able to change keybinds with Crispy is not an issue with just them, it's an issue with Crispy/Chocolate's setup

honest grove
#

Yeah, it would be nice to patch it but i dont think it'll happrn

#

Couldnt find a workaround either

#

Whatevs, i'll try out dsda

#

Doom is 30 years old. This first person shooter had a profound effect on the world. Playing Doom for the first time - even seeing Doom for the first time - is something that millions of people have never forgotten. This video explores how John Carmack, John Romero and the team at Id managed to create a game that changed the world.

I'm getting sick of this issue so I'll just ask if anyone using Woof! is also having it.
With no apparent cause, the mouse randomly starts snapping and lagspikes begin on ANY map that can last from 2-8 minutes or until complete game restart, including base IWADS on v14.0.0

gusty bobcat
#

No issues from me, I build Woof! from source on my Debian Linux machine.

What is your operating system? Where did you download woof from? Can you check your system monitor for performance spikes when playing? Do you have any other heavy software running at the same time?

vale gyro
#

most likely gonna either roll back versions and have to restart my saves

#

or gonna compile from source and see if that fixes anything

#

it's also completly random when it happens

gusty bobcat
#

It's good to try compiling, but if the issue persists, you should submit this as an issue on the Github page

#

Also, I just thought of this but do you have all of your system up to date? Latest Win update, latest drivers, etc? Could also just be a bug on Windows part, possibly.

vale gyro
#

I'll try updatting GPU drivers see if that fixes it

otherwise everything else is up to date

I'll check on my Linux box and check if it is a windows-related issue as well

issue still persists with newest GPU drivers, gonna attempt to build from source

didn't fix the issue sadly

I'll just open an issue if I can't find any solution

the doom 2 ost is really good and a lot more diverse than doom 1's ost

#

but they're both amazing

#

i actually think tnt evilutions ost is amazing as well

finite crag
#

Countdown to Death playing in the first Hell level is, uh...

#

Like dude elevator music is not the best way to reintroduce us to Hell for the first time in the game. Compared to Doom 1993's Untitled being a banger.

gusty bobcat
#

And even if he can't, there might also be some other user with this issue elsewhere, who might also help with it.

vale gyro
#

it sometimes just lags, sometimes it just makes the mouse snap, sometimes both

#

sometimes one can happen and then turn into one of the other two

#

the severity of it also is inconsistent

#

so I'm more on the side of "this ain't an engine issue" even though I've never had this issue before with any port, game, or Woof version as I've previously stated

gusty bobcat
