Hi I have a issue regarding map making, I'm using Ultimate Doom Builder and just now I'm getting a message saying gzdoom.pk3 is missing from the game configuration. I have the most recently updated version of GZDoom and this message has never appeared before. If anyone knows how to fix this issue would be very helpful. The maps still playable though so it doesn't impact me at all it's just annoying really.
gzdoom.pk3 is a file that has some assets for gzdoom
It is usually in the same folder as GZDoom
Check it it exists there
I just checked, apparently I haven't updated GZDoom yet, the files there. I'll update it later and see if that fixes the issue

you need to add gzdoom.pk3 to your resource list, but make sure you tick "exclude resource from testing"

vanilla doom has weapon sway that's more or less a lower semicircle. If you want a closer to vanilla experience, consider DSDA doom or WOOF

Option 1 - contact the developers asking for a flathub version and hope they can so it.
Option 2 - Allow the use of arch linux packages and pacman package manager (do at your own risk)

Fixed the weapon bob bug. It may have been an older version of Beautiful Doom, even though I didn't load the mod anymore. Upgrading fixed it.
But now I got a new problem. GZDOOM won't load HD textures. whether by command line, or adding the path in Global.Autoload. Even after starting over with a new INI file
what hd texture pack are you using
jdtp. worked for years. although, i did just install a newer version of gzdoom. maybe that's why?

Here's a mean secret I came across in a map: In order to obtain a BFG, you need to shoot two sigil eyes. One raises the wall it's behind and the other raises the platform to room level.
If you shoot the first one and go 'ooh BFG' and jump into the pit without shooting the other one, you're softlocked and need to load a savegame.
how to avoid loosing large amounts of ammo in doom 2 map 9
hug pain elementals to prevent them from attacking or just don't get the bfg until after they're all gone. the bfg room has tons of lost souls that prevent PEs from attacking a la the 21 lost soul limit

if a pain ele tries to spawn a lost soul, but the lost soul would be in a wall or thing(like a player), the lost soul will die. So if you're right up against a PE, it'll be haemless

it's a bad idea to do in d64 not because they bite, but because lost souls spawned into a wall or thing(like a player) explode like a rocket

D64 probably an exception, I don't know because I haven't played it
just read the convo, it's more about exploding lost souls that it is about biting
even cacos only kinda bite. monsters with dedicated melee attacks will do so consistently. but cacos only bite if they go for a projectile attack and you happen to be close
You're just more at risk to be attacked by souls on steroids
at least Lost Souls have less health in 64
I find it alot easier to punch things out in 64 most monsters melee attacks seem slow and inconsistent

yeah d64 pains are crazy. pains have two mouths and lost souls are nearly -fast named. yeah hitboxes are mostly better. chainsaw is easy on mancs and arachnos in that game

must've been either system limitations or a way of making it easier for the player
Ran into a 64 archvile yesterday. It's pretty brutal at first because I'm so used to the arch attack in classic and I'd keep peaking at the wrong time and get blasted. The zap lasts a tiny but longer

Zdaemon just changed my life. I've been trying and failing to use any of the classic doom multiplayer services. Just got zdaemon to work and spent about 45 minutes deathmatching in doom 2 for the first time ever. I'm ecstatic r n. Also massive props to the USDQC for Wednesday night deathmatch. This might be a weekly thing for me

Even if you're not a big TNT fan (though I do think it's stronger than the majority of shovelware back then but yeah...it drags sometimes), team TNT made BOOM which has lasted since 1996 as perhaps the most popular compatibility standard (cl9) for conservative source ports and wads after vanilla. And nearly every source port is derived from it. prboom, prboom+, dsda, eternity, mbf, mbf21 all have roots in the original boom

Neither did plutonia in a 1-1 sense. I mean that both of these contributions to the doom canon: tnt for both some atmosphere but mostly in my opinion from their boom engine, and casali's for level design, could conceivably have sparked interest in valve's hiring team. Both groups deserve some credit I mean. Both team TNT and plutonia were instrumental to modern maps. You don't get sunlust mapdesign without plut, and sunlust's engine is literally boom. Engine making, coding; and map design are both important to valve

Just finished 3x3. Some maps are tedious and stand out from an otherwise great pack of fast-paced maps.
Like a more condensed Scythe.
M31 in particular seemed to be inspired by Stardate 20XX series and was especially fun.
M32 has an creatively mean mechanic: There are two invulnerabilities in the map. The first is mandatory to get past a horde of revenants and some archviles blocking the exit. The second one is near the very end, so you only need it if the first one runs before you're done through the whole horde.
Once you jump into the exit hole, you trigger the ending mechanism that kills the Romero head on a timer (a common trick), except you're falling onto 20 damaging floor during that time.
There's no way to stay alive in the hole for the entire duration of the timer... without an invulnerability that is.
So if you've already used the second one, the map is unwinnable.
I'll give it a go today

Playing Congestion 1024 now. Great, bite-sized coffee-break games.
The sole design restriction is that each map has to take place within a 1024x1024 area.
I expected 3x3 to be like this rather, but its restrictions are 1. only 3 flats per map, 2. only 3 wall textures per map, 3. only 3 monsters per map. Obviously only the latter matters for gameplay, but it can lead to very interesting combat puzzles.
Not to mention the player is certain there won't be a surprise enemy if they've already seen three different monsters in a map. Or it can cause suspense by throwing only two monster types at the player until the very end.
My sister played doom 1 for the first time one or two days ago, we played both co-op and Deathmatch. She said " I don't like it that much but I'd play it if I was bored"
but she did say Doomguy was THICK.

uv+ historically meant -coop_spawns or -solo-net. But for whatever reason, the steam/console ports mean -coop_spawns AND -fast when they say uv+. This is unplayable for lots of maps.

To play unity uv plus you'd have to put in -solo-net and -fast in the command line. Or activate them both if you're using gz
Truth be told, mapmakers put less effort in balance and congruence when they're adding coop enemies.

Since I'm still getting used to the genre (first-person shooters), I play on the second-lowest difficulty.
Because I don't know how difficult certain elements of games can be, I usually start on a difficulty like that, and slowly move up in other playthroughs.
I've found games with hard moments even in Easy difficulty.
Nothing like, "Oh God, I can't win this!"
But more, "Dang, this is difficult. I'm nearly there, though."

you don't need it: can either skip it by using a teleporter in the lava, or it'll open by following the path from the central tower near the lava with the rocket launcher. At some point there will be a switch and a teleport. go back and forth from that tp and it'll open somehow.

im using steam source port
If you have a map selected it will automatically start that map, if you don't select a map it will give you the main menu
You can go to any map you want using the "IDCLEV" cheat code, or using the "MAP" command
But it will be a pistol start
Just checked the wiki, saves can't be transferred from one source port to another in most source ports and especially not in GZDoom

Most of it boils down to learning each trap and fight in each map and coming up with solutions.
You'll need to try over and over until a particular solution sticks.
When it comes to Thy Flesh Consumed, i turn into the worst player. Everything else is acceptable.
They really had to show them a new challenge.
And i only replayed it to record a demo.
I've had to save and reload countless times knowing that it could break the demo but well, let's see how it turns out when I viddump it.

Found a very clumsily made map. You can bump a door you're supposed to open towards the end of the map to get a BFG right at the beginning. Monsters will constantly open coloured doors from inside, breaking the game's sequence.

e4m2 gives you tons of cells, an easily accessible rad suit, armor, soulsphere, and a megarmor in a secret(with the bfg if you do the grab). e4m6 has ZERO armor and only a bfg at the end with only so much cell ammo until then and enough lava that rad suits need to be portioned very well and no cyber telefrag.

after getting the key with the cyberdemon and backtracking, face the starting door as though you're starting the level and turn right(or turn left at the starting door on the way back). There is a gap in the wall

If it's far away, duck in a corner. It won't spawn a lost soul if it can't see you. (But it will continue moving towards your position.) Since it has a very high pain chance, you can shoot intermittently with a shotgun and duck back without letting it spawn. You can also just stunlock it with chaingun fire. If it's nearby, just hug it. It can't spawn if you're standing right in front of it. After that you can even punch it to death.
In a messy fight with lots of things going on, reach for the plasma to get rid of it immediately as you keep running. But the rocket launcher is usually a bad idea, especially in close range, because the shooting delay is long enough to let it spawn lost souls and there's a high chance that you facerocket yourself on a lost soul.
Itās not an actual PSX Doom, itās a TC in GZDoom that I was talking about.

Classic doom is a fun game is imo because I love the 2d characters and just how the game works as a whole
yeah, Doom 2s enemy set is especially timeless and the mods keep the game even more fresh.
Find it funny how even though games can be years old they can still bring entertainment
Rekkr has a slow start, but once it finally gives you more weapons it gets way better
one thing that helps games like Doom2 become timeless is the fact you can basically design levels on a piece of paper.
The latter is my biggest problem with BTSX as a whole. I do love it but some levels are unnecessarily large and convoluted, turning gameplay into a chore. That and most levels look and feel too much like each other.

you should be conservative with your ammo but not like to the point where you are using your fists

sprites, the 2d visual representations of things is 2d, but broadly, the game is 3d

you can effectively chainsaw cacodemons too assuming there aren't much hazards in the room
pretty sure you can also do it with pain elementals and arachnotrons, haven't tried yet
If you're a pro-tyson player, you can saw arachnos, but generally speaking their hurtbox is way smaller than their bounding box so actually chainsawing them is really hard. If you play gzdoom or doom64, it works fine buuut not on pc vanilla. Pains are easily sawed cuz they can't attack normally when you're up close. Cacos can be hard. They pain state more or less consistently(you may get bitten once) but their hitbox is really janky. Try it with different monsters. You'll notice different properties and who is easier or harder to saw
yuh theres plenty chances to saw, but pinky is a freebie in most cases.

For transparent textures it depends on the map format.
Doom format: not possible.
Boom format: give a linedef action 260 and it will become transparent.
For ZDoom/UDMF: look up TranslucentLine.

most of the "addons" are pretty solid. If you're interested in trying more community content, try out a source port like woof/dsda/gzdoom and you'll have 30 years of content to play

Discovered something fascinating. You know how the revenant's hitbox 'jumps' during the tic it shoots a fireball (since it technically shoots from the middle of its hitbox), right?
If you're playing on Boom and if you manage to shoot the revenant with enough firepower to push it off a ledge exactly as it's shooting, you can actually bump it on top of a higher platform that it otherwise wouldn't be able to climb by walking.
They're of course free mods you can grab from the web :p

I don't think that's true. e4 doesn't have any bfgs in a pinky room. The first bfg in doom1 is in e3m3. There is another in e3m4, e3m5, and e3m7. e4 has it in e4m2, e4m5,e4m7, e4m8. Check doomwiki for details or decino's video. The pinky room he's thinking of is from doom2 map08

One of the best things about the Switch is being able to randomly whip it out and challenge people to a few games of Classic Doom deathmatch via tabletop anytime, anywhere. Even if you don't have a TV or extra controllers, you can still do it in tabletop mode with sideways joycons. You can't use sideways joycons in single player (which I presume is because the devs assumed everyone would always have at least two joycons on them at all times, so it'd be pointless to play single player with just one since it's an objectively inferior control scheme due to the lack of a second analog stick) so it's cool that you can still split up the joycons to play deathmatch if that's all you have.

If you play using two joycons or a pro controller, the dpad keys are mapped to switching to shotgun for up, chaingun for right, rocket launcher for down, and plasma gun for left
But you can't do that if you're playing deathmatch with single joycons since the dpads are used for the face buttons.
I kinda wish they let you use single joycons in single player anyways for the people who are nostalgic for SNES Doom, since I'm pretty sure the controls are near identical.

Nope, but hitting L or R shows icons of the guns at the top of the screen, so you don't have to toggle through the weapons one by one.

I play controller on pc. I use: LT strafe, Right stick use, shotgun Y, chaingun B, rocket A, plasma X, BFG RB, fist, LB. that leaves the dpad, view and start keys for whatever combination of map, pausing, and 180° turn you want

dpad in't super accessible for me. I have my middle finger resting on the right shoulder and pointer(claw) on face buttons. But nothing resting near the dpad

the WAD files for doom1, doom2, tnt,plut, nerve.wad(no rest for the living),and the master levels(possibly maximum doom as well but idk) are the only parts of doom that are copyright. the source code is released. But the levels and assets are not. realistically -- the stuff is out there already. but this is what's still owned by ID/bethesda
Technically would count as piracy. I say donāt and just send your friend FreeDoom instead if they need IWADs

This dude came back to life after I killed him and the eye disappeared so
Just played M22 of CC2 and it was quite an experience. On one hand, it feels somewhat amateurish and it's silly how punishing its traps are. On the other hand, I quite enjoyed the rollercoaster of action with fights that are so off-kilter that it always kept me on my toes.

Just started playing BTSX Episode 1, and JESUS CHRIST is it intense! Seriously, the demon onslaught in it is relentless! They throw so many monsters at you at once that it's insane... 10/10
