With the archvile room, I got a jump start on the dread knights killing them before they could get buffed. Then I fought like hell until the tyrants spawned in. Crucibled one of them, bfged (using the ammo in the room) & ssg-ballista'd the other. Then I froze the archvile and picked them off with grenades and ssg.

At least archvile can be weakened by the bfg. A buff totem can't 😭

And Vega technically doesn’t “save us” at the end of urdak, we’re using his AI to move the rings and activate the portal itself. The khan was essentially a “you can’t leave here fuckboiii” barrier between us and the portal

They both are long if that's what you are asking. World Spear definitely takes time but you have the hammer, so you can have some fun. The arenas are definitely longer than most Taras Nabad arenas for example

With shield guys, carcasses and hell knights as "fodder" all the time

I try to aim for the head of the second bm but the arena is so cramped that I always get hit by an imp that messes up my headshot

and then you get impaled and paralyzed by the bm and the doom hunters finish the job

I keep meathooking around the arena waiting for the bm to open up

Stay in the air as much as possible

And practically ignore everything else unless a fodder demon is in the way

So I'm taking a break after starting my first campaign just after finishing Doom 2016 and I'm at the Cultist Base. I really hope I don't sound like one of those incompetent journalists whining about the difficulty (playing on HMP btw) but I feel like I've hit a skill wall in this level and like I'm even more on the backfoot that in the first two levels.

I know I have weapons that can counter the new demons you'll encounter (ice bomb + lock-on burst against the whiplash, etc.) but sometimes I tend to forget that I have grenades and the ice bomb and I always have to mentally remind myself "Hey, you've got an ice bomb to stun enemies into place. Fucking use them, you scrub!" but still forget to do it sometimes.

Work on gun mechanics more than worrying about grenades, practice landing your shots and leveling up your mods

Also, FPS is not my main genre (I only got into it recently because of Doom and "boomer shooters" because traditional FPS games that I'm not sure can be name-dropped here don't really interest me that much) so I'm a pretty lousy shot compared to the average player. Then again, that probably sounds like an excuse.

I can guess what’s really holding you back - movement. Eternal has a very different movement system than you are used to (but perhaps similar to boomer shooters), you gotta get in that circle strafe zone and learn air maneuvers, this will take time. But I can say, you might have crap aim but if you can move correctly you’ll stay alive 99% of the time

I do realize that. I've been watching Zero Master and UnderTheMayo (I didn't have a PC that could run the game by the time Eternal was released and I only got it by December 2020).

And I can weapon combo between the SSG & Gauss Cannon pretty well. But of course, I don't have the Ballista yet and I'm probably going to weapon swap while on the move (I had the SSG & G.Cannon in 2016 mapped to mouse up and down respectively).

You can't "kinda do whatever" in any DOOM game. There are enemies trying to kill you and areas you can't access until you unlock them. If you're bad, you'll die. Hence skill-based.

If it's a challenge you want, you can get that in The Ancient Gods Part Two. Just go on Ultra-Nightmare and limit yourself to melee only.
