But keep in mind that, again, Hugo Martin is not a reliable source when it comes to the lore. He has said multiple verifiably incorrect statements about the lore before - he's only human, and it's clear sometime he has to pull an answer out of his ass because he's forgotten something.

I believe Midnight told me that Hugo told him that Doom's lore is intentionally up to interpretation. If that is true, then blindly believing whatever Hugo says about said lore would be contradictory to this design philosophy. Death of the Author thus would apply.

The point is not that Hugo is always wrong. Moreso that he is not always right, and thus his statement alone is not enough to confirm something about Doom. What matters is if the actual game supports an argument.

And, in this regard, the game supports what my posts have stated about the Doom Slayer. The idea that he is some sort of omnipotent god fundamentally does not work with Doom's mere concept. It requires you to assume the gameplay is completely non-canon in every regard just to justify outlandish statements like "he punched a Titan to death" or "he just uses guns because they're fun."

That's like claiming that Leon Kennedy is actually a superhuman judo master and canonically he doesn't actually have to shoot any Ganado in RE4, he can actually just rip their head off effortlessly but he doesn't because that's not fun.
This is a fundamental misunderstanding of Doomguy's character, why he is so popular, and what makes him a well-written silent protagonist. That isn't even getting into how this logic completely and utterly breaks the Doom story as a whole.

My point is that yes the Slayer is "powerful" but the "power" does not come from him being a badass Mary Sue who does whatever he wants because he can just punch his way out of every problem. The "power" comes from his rage in the face of injustice, and his persistent will.

The Divinity Machine, at the end of the day, is a plot construct to justify the Slayer being able to do shit like Glory Kills and rampage across Hell for eons and shit. This whole plot point isn't as essential to the modern Doom games as people think - it's not the core tenet of the Slayer's character.

And this misunderstanding results in bullshit claims that just do this character and story an injustice.

"The Slayer can't die, he's unkillable!" Also unsupported in any capacity, this notion breaks the story on every level. This is not how narratives work.
"The Praetor Suit makes him invincible!" This is also unsupported, nothing says this, it's an assumption based on the UAC failing to penetrate it when they likely only used lab equipment on it.
"The Berserk powerup is canon Slayer!" Absolutely wrong and bullshit.

This argument is essentially saying that the core of modern Doom, its entire gameplay loop, all of the functions within the gameplay, are completely irrelevant to the actual story or canon, and that is a dramatic assumption that is not nearly supported enough to justify. The way I view Eternal is that it focused so heavily upon improving the 2016 combat system (most criticisms of the game at that time being the repetitive nature of the horde arenas) that it somewhat forgot to have some vital quality control in regards to the story and how later the DLCs came about.

DLC1 made a terrible mistake by being conveyed as a no nonsense, unfriendly to noobs sort of combat expansion, which many of us were dying for.

DLC2 backtracked and wanted to be for everyone, a last hurrah of sorts, as hugo put it. But the DLC sacrificed the core gameplay loop for the power fantasy, which can be good, but they leaned too far into the Hammer's power, ultimately making something like a UN run feel as difficult as Ultra-Violence.

Powerscalers are approaching based on the idea of "measuring" a character's power with feats and displays of power to compare and contrast with other characters. Sure, fine, I can see the appeal in this. But powerscaling is just theorycraft. I'm approaching this from the context of Doom, what its protagonist is supposed to mean to the player, how its story works and how its universe ties into its narrative.

The ARC fought off Hell for 13 years and put up a very good fight, their own weapons could take on demons just fine - it was the sheer number of them that was overwhelming. Regardless, the Slayer needs his weapons or he will die.
The Slayer's Testament referring to a "sword and shield" can very easily be conjecture, because in Eternal the Super Shotgun is consistently referred to metaphorically as a "steel-barrelled sword of justice."
The mere existence of the Fortress of Doom implies he had access to a mech during his rampage, because the consistent usage of said Fortress presents the very real possibility the Slayer had access to the Fortress during this time period. It being in Hell would make sense considering he was blatantly there at some point in between 2016 and Eternal.
"He didn't need one for the Dreadnought or the Icon of Sin-" both of which he did not kill. He had to put them both in stasis with a Crucible. The Dark Ages is showing us that the Slayer uses a mech to fight a Titan, and the Atlans are a viable method of doing so as the Sentinels bring many during the Immora fight. And we know he didn't use a Crucible on the Great One because its body is rotting, implying real death.
My point, anyway, is not that he 100% used a mech against the Great One. My point is that multiple alternatives have been given to explain his fight against it, and "he punched it to death" is a silly assumption.
The Slayer's lifespan is immortal but demons are capable of killing him. If they were to catch him. Which they can't. So yes, this part is right.
The suit is clearly damaged easily by demon attacks, just a few attacks from a Baron is enough to tear it apart. The UAC simply fails to penetrate it, and likely only tried with lab equipment.

It is likely that the Deag Priests sealed him, not the demons - in any case, it's likely that if they tried to kill him in this state they could risk waking him. It's also possible they didn't kill him because Davoth willed it so, as he wanted to use the Slayer to destroy the Maykrs.
"Gameplay is not accurate" is a non-argument. The fundamental tenets of the gameplay are. Minutae may not be, but it is undeniable that the Slayer 1) can die to the demons if he screws up, and 2) requires his guns in order to stand a chance against fighting them.
It is not stated that the UAC used Argent weapons on the Praetor Suit. All that is said is that it was "subjected to numerous tolerance tests, and found to be almost impervious to any damage."

loot magnet isn't important early game

you don't have enough movement options for it to matter, and the enemy density at that point isn't high enough to warrant it

later on, dashing out of glory kills (there's a 700ms pickup delay, and the clock for that starts immediately after health/armor/ammo is spawned) becomes essential because you're more likely to get attacked out of glory kill as there's going to be progressively more enemies around you

you get 300ms of invincibility post-glory kill and using that time to build space is always beneficial

the enemy density in exultia is so low that it's not worth it to spam dash out of glory kills

i'd say loot magnet is worth it by the time you have flaming hook

and by that point you should also have dash recharge on glory kill

flame belch is great for resetting your one shot prevention without having to commit to a glory kill or grabbing a healthpack/armor, so quickdraw belch is naturally going to make it even better

i'd say quickdraw belch first, spend 3rd crystal on ammo upgrade, then unlock loot magnet with 4th crystal

armor and health for blood are strong options after that, blood punch out of glory kill is an amazing panic option because it'll land before your invincibility ends

combining that with chaingun shield should make you unkillable as long as you keep refreshing your one shot prevention

Tell him to set a weapon accordingly to what he wants to punch swap with.

If he's using Ballista, set a Ballista bind, then you shoot the Ballista, melee, and then click on the Ballista key bind, and you'll cancel the cooldown and are able to shoot immediately again with the Ballista

Apply this logic to other weapons if you can

Basically shooting, punching, then swapping to the same weapon you just used allows you to shoot again but an increased speed and less cooldown.
