After the acquisition of the bfg there’s a crowd of cacodemons you’re expected to use your bfg on since there’s a pick up, but this was of course patched in 6.66 to prevent cheesing the master level, it’s that portal that opens up, but by hugging the back right corner of it you can get it by proxy

In the normal level the first 2 serve as obstacles since their attacks generally do CC to the player when hit (or in the case of carcass shield, not hit per se but just a fucking wall), while the 2 mancubi are obviously a trap to once again put a bit more pressure.

To this I'd argue Master Levels are meant to challenge your skill and knowledge with the game. In this instance, you should know that using Energy Shield prevents any damage and/or CC from Marauders, which would allow you to in fact jump and dash over them. Much like you want to with platforming.

if you just don't destroy the totem it's a great arena but the fact that in the base game and even for most the dlcs no totem is forced is weird

I think the issue with this is the buff totem buff is too hard for the average player to actually handle an entire arena with said buff. I think it's hard for us to gauge the difficulty of a buff totem arena since we have like 3+ years under our belts

That said that doesn't mean the "go hunt for totem first" design is much better

I wouldn't really call a timer a gimick as much as an actual skill check that introduces challenge. Rather than a player being able to rely on lock-on spam + hide with energy shield + chainsaw, a player would need to learn an efficient kill rather than the slow but safe one.

Though not every fight in Eternal has to be so fine tuned into engaging the player, I mean you could say the same about the hallway fights that just include a lot of fodder or even a better example, TAG2's arenas, such as the Stone Imp fight at the end of Immora. I agree that arenas should make you engaged into the fun zone but encounters outside of that are needed for pacing purposes, such as platforming challenges or yes, stuff like timed events with SGN, they are just there to take a little break from the constant action and there for only that reason.
