Usually you have to hold your weapon switch button for a certain amount of time in order to pull up the weapon wheel

What do you mean scroll? There is no scroll option like in Doom 1,2, and 3. The button you’re likely hitting is just the “last weapon” button. It toggles between your current weapon and the last one you had out before it.

The way I like to play this game

Is that after getting "tier 2" weapons (meaning weapons that use an ammo type of a gun that I already have, like the SSG after combat shotgun) I mostly stop using "tier one"

Here are the uses where tier 1 is optimal, let me know if I missed anything:

quick switching and maykr headshots for PB, microwave beam for spirits and their hosts, full auto for stone imps and one cycle marauder combos and sticky bombs for 2 marauders (especially during master levels where focusing on 1 equals a death sentence)
