how do you make good outdoor areas
im pretty good at filling labs and combat bases full of stuff but i cant get my head around a forest or a urban lvl
There's a handful of simple 3d floors to provide separations/walkable areas
This is a tricky one to describe, but it's an extension of the "pancake technique". Draw a bunch of overlapping rough circles and then change the heights
It's very vibes based for me. I'll look at an area and think "nah that needs more" and mess around for another 40 minutes until it feels properly filled in
Less related to the specific techiniques is making your outdoor areas contiguous with the structures enclosing the indoor areas. Ie, build the outside of the building
im makeing a map of a forest were each lvl you lose all your items and start from scratch to make it harder and also just funner
Forests are tricky to do, very dependent on your decorative actors (tree sprites/models, grass, leaf litter etc)
Not a full forest more like a mountain
Also with outdoor areas I focus on building the gameplays spaces first. Put thing things that 'must' be in there. Essentially a block out. Detailing natural spaces can be formed around any existing structures/play spaces much more easily than the other way around
heres a tester lvl i like to make these to see if its worth makeing a actual wad based on the map (i think you will need gzdoom i dont use anything else)

Second, make up your mind what you want this to be. Total conversion =/= commercial game. I'm assuming you're talking about something Doom related given the server we're in but you have mentioned precisely nothing about anything to do with whatever this project is

Well whatever details you had provided them with so they at least had an idea what they were meant to be working on might be good to include in your pitch. Just saying "a total conversion" doesn't exactly dispel the mystery surrounding what the idea is, let alone spark interest in committing to it.

Building a dev team is hard. People who are good at what they do tend to already be extremely busy.
Also this is not the best server for game dev recruitment. You'll be better off finding indie dev related circles

Ik the main dev was lazy didn’t help and then kept promising things he could add and then doing nothing I had the game planned out all good just for everything to go wrong now I have to think of a nearly completely different thing and rework the gameplay for it to fit dooms engine and all it’s just a headache to figure out

Like vanilla or limit removing, Boom, MBF, etc.
Each format has their own extensions to DeHacked
Anyways, I’d just go for Doom v1.9 for now, assuming you do want your mod to work on other ports

lots of missing textures and stuff when you load up the game. it's all the LOR that's missing so i'm assuming there's just a way i need to pack it all up i'm just not sure how to do that.

So i dont know where to ask this so apologies if this isnt the place but ill go ahead. Im currently going into my 4th and final year of university and really wanted to make something im deeply interested in and something that is sorta a passion project.
I really want to make a og doom style fps game, like a small level, nothing too big cause im mainly an artist. Not to mention i get given from september to december for pre production and then from january to may is full production. I was wanting to at least get some help on knowing peoples workflow in creating assets for a og doom like game. Like creating enemy and weapon sprites and importing them into something like unity, and even texturing/surfacing.
I know this is alot to ask of people so im not expecting anybody to take time out of their day to teach me, but if anyone has any useful links to resources that i could use to learn i appreciate it. For context since im in university i already generally know how to model, texture and all sorts, Ive looked up stuff but i never know, theres always something unique people have to share and that would be cool.
For enemy and weapon sprites i assumed i would just model them in something like blender for example, then take pictures of the enemies in different poses and such. Just wanting to know if im also right in that

My workflow has been basically blender for modelling and unwrapping, substance painter for low poly stuff, then for high poly its been zbrush, maya for retopo, blender for unwrapping and then substance painter for texturing
Anyhoo, next thing to plan out is scope. Write a design doc. It doesn't matter if it's "good", you just need to get ideas down that you can iterate from
You have a limited time frame so locking in your broad plan for the game is important
Part of the design doc can be whether your using models or sprites, high poly or low poly etc

i think you gotta select both mod wad files and drag them to gzdoom (or whatever source port you're using idk) some might not be compatible together tho

Nah don't use that, use Doom Launcher
you can not only play with multiple wads or pk3s in the same game, but you can even choose what sourceports you use.
ZDL is tried and tested

no cus doom just doesnt work like that
walls are all one texture and the only way you can split them up is with the lil dot things (forgot what they were called lol) and even then its only vertical
i mean there may be like a source port or map format that gets rid of this problem but idk

In UDMF format yes, you can give upper, mid and lower textures independent alignments. In non UDMF format (ie, everything else), no. But if you want the upper and lower textures to aling properly on the y axis, hit the upper and lower unpeg flags on the linedef

Nice maps. Beaten on UV. Maps were pretty easy, but not boring.
MAP01: just nicely done small tech base, tho I don't like a walk-over exit. Would be better with a switch.
MAP02: I suppose it's unfinished due to the plain geometry, but that computer and blue key room look great.
MAP03: there are several things I find weird. The blue armor that can't be reached. Arachnotron feels out of place due to the corridor being thin. What's with that hell knight? I like the fake exit with a broken road detail, but I don't like that for some reason the real exit is not marked with the exit sign.

I swear I've heard the term conversion used to describe games transferred to different coding languages or operating systems so yeah there is some change but still it just doesn't sound right
I think the term conversion came about for games that used to be considered ports but are technically remakes/demakes due to being built from scratch for that system and sometimes (not always) using altered or new assets to fit the system’s graphics capabilities since stuff like an Atari 2600 version of an arcade game is completely different technically and whatnot

You'll need to remove the line action on the door itself and make a new one ay your chosen switch location

So im workin on sprite overhauls/custom sprites for a miniWAD called memories and made this chainsaw design I call Mr. Gibs.
Im struggling to figure out if this looks right, the idea is that its essentially 2 knives crammed into the motors which makes then stab infront of it repeatedly

air is going to be based off of this rough idea i made for it
I can't take it sounds depressing. Seems like some deep and mysterious lore.
At the end of i cant take it, there will be a fully red door that is surrounded by blood(maybe?? not sure yet)
when opened, the level ends and transitions into air, where you will have no weapons but your fists.
And when interracting with Mr. Pow, who sits idly at the horizon of the fields, you will end the level once more

Two examples are Mr. Gibs and the headsprites
Mr. Gibs is a full repsrite of the chainsaw that uses two super sharp knives that were jammed into the moto of a broken chainsaw
Headsprites dont have a name yet, nor a description i can rely on
Im also going to be chainging some of the textures/assets of floors and ceilings and such to match with this stylisation

it's its own wad file, you can just start it in gzdoom. I don't think you'd need base doom as there doesn't seem to be many assets that carry over
I think so yeah. I believe the point of freedoom is to have an IWAD you can use. I don't know how it interacts with other wads though since I never played it

well, source ports doesn't really matter but basically in windows you press ctrl and you can select more than one file! drag the files to gzdoom (for example) and i think it would work out

You can do what you can for now, and apply what you learn moving forward as you're in a better position to do so. Sometimes life gets in the way and we put things off, we just have to find our way back.
Maybe talking to your dad and brother could be beneficial. My two youngest sons are 16 and 18, and if one had a reasonable request like this, I'd stress for them to work it out and help each other out.

Well for mods that need GZDOOM specifically, limit removing could be ports as old as BOOM. I remember one YouTube channel using BOOM to run Sigil (which requires limit removing) in MS-DOS

(This is just a random made-up story, as there is no official story yet during development of this remixed mod)

It is hard to capture what made Plutonia tick since it had its own tropes most people would avoid abusing in later years. Plutonia 2 already felt more like, uh... well, Plutonia 2 which I was fine with since it shown map author confidence in their own approaches.

But an actually serious answer, Ribbiks is the most well known evolution of what Plutonia started. Tight set ups, mean traps, combat focused maps
Although Ribbik's later stuff is quite esoteric
Skillsaw is another mapper with a clear evolutionary line to Plutonia
Counterpoint - I am ass at Doom
Go2it is one of the first slaughter maps (despite having only 200 ish monsters) so everything from Alien Vendetta to Deus Vult to Sunder is arguable Plutonia inspired
I would love to romp through Sunlust without gritting my teeth to dust in frustration, but alas
I should use those more. I'm too prideful to go down to HMP 99 times out of 100
if I ever actually do it, it'll probably be for Ribbiks maps
Crumpets is Ribbiks' first mapset iirc, that is much more approachable than Sunlust

Plut 2 competes with Going Down for my favourite "vanilla" WAD. The few things I like more are GZDoom stuff and Auger Zenith, which feels way too fancy to call vanilla

Cyriak Harris is probably my favourite mapper. Anything he's made, I've ended up loving
I'm going through the Cacowards year by year right now, and I'm almost at 2012 where he wins his first one. I have high hopes for The Eye
I love the sense of chaos and fun present throughout his maps, they stick in my head far better than a lot of other maps I enjoy

New feature that's part of the v2.5 release of my 3D platform actor class for the GZDoom engine. This test map is called PIVOTS or "Pivot test" in the episode selection menu.

does anyone know how to get mods working for doom + doom 2? i want to play with smooth doom's weapons but every method i've tried i couldn't get to work and i cannot for the life of me figure out gzdoom or zdl. that and trying to play a mod in doom + doom 2 just default moves me to doom 1 when im wanting to play no rest for the living
yeah smooth doom was made for zdoom, while doom + doom 2 is not zdoom based so it cant support it.

Doom 1 + 2 is fine, but they're not what the modding community uses

You still won't get smoothdoom running on those however. But those are ports most popularly used if what you want to make is (mostly) mapping

GZDoom seems to be the most popular source port for it's ease of use, customisability and compatibility with 99% of what you would want to use
it was my first source port before i changed into nugget doom
i still use gzdoom but i only use it for modding
yall is it possible to just turn a directory into a wad
a while ago i made a shitpost mod, but in a folder as its easier to work with, and just running it through slade, but it doesnt seem possible to export the directory as a wad
I think you can try making a new wad in slade and then drag all resources from the directory into the wad
i guess could be possible

I know it's not the super authentic Doom experience source port, but I've never cared for that anyway
i like a little purity on my source port
although im not an actual purist, i kinda like some bit of vanilla

back when i made it about a year ago i was still primarily on windows
do i just run udb through wine or something

I've struggled to use others on linux
Linux doesnt really have drag and drop functionality, so I've been running my wads through ZDL, and nothing seems to work with it but a very specific version of GZDoom
yeah gzdoom is available
and so is vkdoom
which is essentially just gzdoom but vulkan
so essentially this build of ultimate doom builder is just running through wine
but it somehow sucks more than if i manually ran it through wine because it doesnt save my preferences when i reopen it
saving and running the map take disappointingly long and its crashing quite a bit
autosaves are made but i have no clue where they are stored so i cant restore my map after it crashed
i tried running the proper windows version through wine, and the window randomly doesnt respond to user input
i cant even set up game configuration because it freezes altogether when i select file and i need to sigkill it to close it
im about to have an aneurysm
GZDoom already supports vulkan. VKDoom's thing is it's a port geared more towards standalone games and performance
I follow a game called Golden Souls 3, and it's creator touted VKDoom as running his game a lot better than GZDoom does
VKDoom came around because the lead dev of GZDoom is way too controlling of what features and changes get added to the engine
Which seems surprising considering what it can do, but that is the legitimate reason
Which includes a bunch of QoL features and engine performance boosts
