I'm trying to make a script where a ceiling lowers, enemies spawn and the door only opens when you kill the enemies, i'm failing at the opening part. the imps spawn just fine but i can't get them to open the door when they die, am i doing something wrong? the script is compiling just fine btw

I downloaded a waterfall texture for my WAD and I added all frames (named WFALL 1-4 respectively) inbetween the TX_START and TX_END lumps in Slade. The thing is, I load up the WAD in GZ doom with a test waterfall and it isn't animated, a little help here?

Okay I will give some tips
If the player falls off in this area they get soft-locked and have to restart, a good idea is to add damaging floor and give a lava/poison texture
The stairs at the exit and at the stair are a bit too steep
A lot of the rooms are made up of large squares. nothing is wrong about that from gameplay perspective but changing the shapes a bit will add a lot more depth to the design
Other than these small issues the rest of the map is very well designed
took me a couple hours but again i suggest palying with prboom+ on ultra violence
a pretty short and easy map but i think its fun
also its MAP01, MAP02 is the unfinshed version

I believe you have to use DECORATE or Zscript (works on only gzdoom and zandronum)
While making a custom weapon in ZDoom is a bit tricky, this guide should help you get on your way.

ever since i updated udb today i havent been able to load my maps outside of the builder
i fixed the pk3 problem but now i cant even open it in the builder because of it
i do what the builder asks and it throws a fit, i take the pk3 pack out and it throws another fit, i try to get rid of any other files and the game really throws a fit

slade keeps saying that whenever I insert a zscript in it, it says its decorate instead of zscript but its actually zscript
actually nvm its the pk3 file that keeps identifying it as decorate
it should be in this file under actors and the script should be named puro.zs
If you're using a pk3 you don't need slade. Just use a directory structure in explorer and notepad++ as the text editor

Jokes aside, if you're on Windows, just get Ultimate Doom Builder. Once you've learnt the basics (eg how to make a door), load vanilla maps to see how they work and try to replicate the methods with your own design.

ACS (Action Code Script) is the scripting language that was originally created for Hexen by Raven Software and has been greatly expanded by ZDoom.
ACS scripts won't help you
The steam version (a.k.a unity port) doesn't have ACS
And in GZDoom or other source ports the music just works
ACS is a tool for mod developers

I'm never sure about blood and molten rock but I generally expect green nukage and lava to hurt, and water and brown slime to be safe.
(Of course, level design context matters too. If you put radsuits next to water, I'm going to have second thoughts.)

Secrets are not meant to be impossible to find for people who didn’t make the map, you need to leave hints to first time players to make it not too easy to find but also not impossible so that they feel rewarded for exploring

Yup. You can put replacements in a pwad.
It's far from uncommon for mapmakers to rip stock textures, modify them (eg change the overall hue to fit the theme), then put it in the wad.
I don't think there's a specific tutorial but the sprite fixing project is a simple and great example for this.

This is a pwad that only contains modified versions of stock sprites for cosmetic corrections. It doesn't contain maps or anything.

I believe it saves as pwad by default but I'm not really sure. You can use file(1) to make sure.
It can only save as a .wad, .iwad and .dta data file. (In slade3)
.wad is an ambiguous extension, unfortunately.
So it most likely refers to pwads here.
And I can't find anything online about being able to save as a .pwad file or anything for slade3
Try exporting as .wad and running file on the resulting file.
The only difference between a pwad and and iwad is the first byte of the file
And you can change that as viewing the file as a hex I believe

Does anyone know how I can downscale high res sprites in doom? I tried to add a high resolution enemy sprite using the "HI_START" and "HI_END" but the sprites were still big when I booted up the wad in GZDOOM. After that I tried it with text using Sprite "LEONA5", 223, 682

Scripting languages are a lot easier to use than programming language, and in the case of doom Zscript and Decorate (the scripting languages) are purpose-built for doom specifically
Also ngl this mindset is not healthy, in my opinion anyone can code, just like everything in life you need to put in some effort, but also literally every game requires some form of coding/scripting to create mods

For mapping you need 0 coding, for modding you either use dehacked which is visual and does not require code, or you use Decorate/ZScript which require scripting/coding but are more advanced however they only run on (G)ZDoom

Well you could use c++ (or most likely just c) but that would require modding by editing the source code of the source port, which just complicates things for no reason imo

I'm trying to make this circular star-ish looking platform look good, but I don't want to give the whole thing the same texture, but due to the really weird angles I made I'm not sure how to get a transitional texture from the center to any possible edge texture to look good on it - any ideas/advice?

and more stuff that changes up the gameplay and how you use the weapons
might make the bfg9000 different to where its like the plasma rifle, but one click and it takes up every single cell ammo you have, each for 1 plasma bolt
so you can use it to nuke an enemy
idk might be pointless in most scenarios

Use an SR Door linedef action
im having trouble making the switch
Right click the button line, and find an action for SR Door (SR is switch repeatable)
Create a rectangle sector, raise the floor a bit in 3d mode and give it a switch texture
and how to connect the door to the switch?
Put a tag number for the door, then assign the tag number in the first parameter of your Switch
Give both the door's sector and the switch's linedef the same tag
Also make sure the switch's linedef has a SR door action and that it's facing the correct way (towards the player)

Hi, I'm doing a wad of doom and well I'm changing textures in slade normally the file would be saved fine, but this time I get this: "ERROR: Iwad save disabled" How do I solve it?
Do not edit an IWAD file
create a new empty wad and add all your custom textures/texture replacements from there

Editing your IWAD is a really bad idea

but if you really want to do it here's how:
Open the IWAD in a hex editor and change the first letter from being the letter I to the letter P
There is really no point to doing so, you can't share that wad with anyone because of copyright, and if you don't have a backup well now you have a Frankenstein wad
But later I change the name of the file and the maps I modify them only leaving some other texture that does not change and the enemies, I only modify the iwad to modify the textures and then change the name
The only time where editing an IWAD file is a good idea is when you are making a standalone game (like freedoom)

- Download a hex editor
- Open your IWAD in that hex editor
- the 4 letters of the wad are "IWAD", replace the I with P so now it's "PWAD"
again I really advise against doing this

This is my first time trying to mix mods together in zdl
When using ZDL remember to have a Doom game IWAD selected. In this case Doom II, or Freedoom: Phase 2 works. For External Files always have the map pack listed first then gameplay mods. If you want anymore gameplay mods then it should be in this order monsters, weapons, blood, hud.

Welcome. Some gameplay mods have special orders if they have custom drops form monsters. So you may need to move monsters below weapons if that happens.
Yeah, that happen when some mods can't replace the map pack's default weapons. Final Doomer works as I'm testing it right now.

The base shape is a vertex
it's a simple dot with an x and y value
with 2 vertices you can make a single linedef
linedefs are what what make up sectors
with 3 or more linedefs you can make a sector
A sector is usually a floor and ceiling while a linedef is a wall
Something important to note is: only linedefs can have actions (such as being switches that open doors or walk triggers)
Sectors only have basic effects (like being a secret area or damaging floor)

Doom 2/1 Format will run on any doom source port
It is a bit limiting though unless you are making a vanilla-ish map
Boom format is similar to doom format, but with many of the limitations gone, it can't run on all source ports but still has good support on almost all source ports
It's like a perfected version of doom format
The ZDoom/UDMF Formats are fully unrestricted and limitless, and imo more complicated unlike what that guy says in the video
the main drawback is it only runs on ZDoom and it's derivatives (like GZDoom)
hexen used to run on an upgraded version of doom engine
Hexen in doom format adds that features of hexen to doom

how easy is it to make custom sprites for doom?
for me personally, i use high speed mouse with pain.net, you need to have at LEAST a basic knowledge of art, shading, coloring, and skill in pixel art. the pictures above of the skeleton is a render that i made in blender via a downloaded skull, so you'll quite possibly need to know a bit of 3d modeling and OR photography if you wanna take a convincing picture of a toy gun or something, downscale it, and edit it with either a tablet or keyboard and mouse like me in a image editor software such as pain.net. also you'll need to import it into doom and replace existing sprites with existing file names OR replace it with code OR code it into the game as a new ACTOR.
