At least with Doom I don't have to worry about the Slayer being retconned to no longer be Doomguy. With FNAF the new movie comes out and suddenly it's a very real possibility the main protagonist actually isn't the guy we were specifically told he was.

And in any other series this wouldn't be a concern, you can just say "well it's a different continuity." But with FNAF Scott is allergic to making his intentions clear in any regard, and most plot points beyond Afton being a killer and Springtrap aren't even confirmed, just implied.

Before the movie I think my understanding of the Mimic as a character was upheaved like three times, because across like four games, an expansion, and an entire short story series they couldn't settle on what that character was actually supposed to be.

Or Secret of the Mimic adapting one of those stories, but also changing all the details, so now either the short stories explicitly meant to tie into and help explain the games are actually meaningless and non-canon, or only specific parts or details of them are canon and you have to cherrypick which.

That is why FNAF is so frustrating. With Doom there is at least a baseline. We know the mainline series is canon, and the stuff that is questionably canon doesn't significantly change the story regardless of their status. There are inalienable parts of Doom that have been cemented and will never change. With FNAF it feels like the concrete framework changes depending on what side of the bed Scott woke up on.

But I knew people who would say the interpretation I listed is the only sensible one and yours would be insane.

My issue with this is that there are many other points where if you assumed the simplest and most direct interpretation of a line or scene, you would come to a conclusion that is blatantly wrong. If you asked the right person that is how they decided Michael was Springtrap. Or that the Toys aren't possessed, they just think you're a criminal.

I think FNAF's setting and themes and "morals" or whatever are among the best and most interesting stuff I've seen in a fictional universe. But Scott has almost no clue how to use it to its full potential, and I struggle to think of any installments that do other than The Fourth Closet

I think he's a dogshit writer and a dogshit franchise manager. I think he is the human equivalent of shackles holding FNAF back from fulfilling its potential. Every time he oversees a new project, like the movies or the Dead by Daylight chapter, it ends up feeling weirdly inaccurate to the games.

I also have personal community drama beef with him that literally nobody here would care about. I think maybe Gristwatch is the only person who would have even an adjacent idea of what it was and even then I'm sure he would think it is stupid.

Some of the superficial surface details point to Afton but as far as I'm concerned, the guy being yellow instead of purple should be enough to say it isn't him, and if it truly is him then it just cements Scott being a fucking moron even more than he already is.

For a while I believed the minigame was about Andrew's family and was tying into UCN's vengeful spirit. I felt this made sense, whatever, I'm probably wrong. But I think the fact I even had the room to come up with a wildly I accurate take on Midnight Motorist and it took years for it to have any sort of implications towards its story is insane.

It is very small, annoying drama.

The TLDR is that one of my closer internet friends was a dude who told me and others he got ahold of an old draft of The Freddy Files with some weird lore shit, that he emailed Scott not knowing what to do, and that Scott emailed back in the affirmative that it was real and asked him to keep it to himself.

The draft leaked because of an asshole "friend" of ours and when the community learned about it Scott publicly stated that he had no clue what it was and it was made up. My friend's credibility plummeted and people harassed him and he ended up leaving the community.

Why this is dumb: everyone ever believes Scott's words and that the user in question made it all up, and I cannot blame them for it because it looks that way on the outside. But I still believed my friend and I just do not being it up publicly because it isn't worth it. From my POV, if Scott was indeed lying like I believe then he threw a fan who trusted him under the bus for the sake of nobody knowing there was scrapped lore.

I can respect this opinion but I personally do think something is lost there. To me an important element of Doom lies in its inspirations. It was always conceptualized as a weird fucked up mashup of Evil Dead and Aliens. Sci-fi meeting infernal body horror and mystical demon shit. IMO if you lose one of these it stops being quite as effective. Those two identities clash in a way that defines Doom IMO.

I think this is shown well in Doom 3 and 2016. Two worlds are clashing here - a world that speaks metal and science, and another that speaks blood, fire, and hate. They are very contrasting settings and worlds.

It felt like a proper DOOM movie throughout the entire runtime for me. It's a loose adaptation I greatly respect for not playing it safe, and even though it objectively did not pay off, I personally think it's a really fucking cool spin on a franchise that's kind of repetetive with its storylines

I can also understand you thinking it lost a significant enough amount of what makes it DOOM but to me it rocks and deserves its place in the franchise (in terms of, like, actually fitting in)

I'm not particularly kind to the 2005 movie but I will say it has a decent handle on replicating Doom 3's vibes.

I wouldn't be mad if more id Software games got loose adaptations like DOOM did. Wildly different universes are awesome

If you ask me which one I'd like to see the most I'd actually be stumped though. Quake has great opportunity to be fucked up just with the question of which storyline to adapt. RAGE would actually rock but I think it'd be panned for being too generic. Heretic/Hexen would make a good series but none of them really connect, from the original trilogy at least, so it'd be weird. Wolfenstein is getting a TV show so we'll see there

My only gripe with the game are its achievements. Not only are there plenty of multiplayer ones, but I'm expected to beat the main game and both expansions FOUR TIMES EACH, once per difficulty. Why not make it so I have to beat it once on any difficulty and then on Nightmare? Besides that, looks promising. I have yet to play it

Comparing them to Wolfenstein and DOOM X360, DOOM 3 is very lenient with its MP achievements

BFG Edition is not a ruined way to play the game, and if it's your only way to play it, it's more than serviceable.

But if you have the OG available, it's better for sure. BFG's changes really compromise on a lot of 3's design philosophy to satisfy Doom 3 haters IMO.

My dad had the opposite reaction to the first. Knew nothing about FNAF, watched the movie, liked it, said he likes it because he prefers "smarter horror movies like Silence of the Lambs."
I, uh, enjoyed the movie but I wouldn't call it smarter even as a FNAF fan lol.
