playing doom 1993 (bought it on the playstation store) and i was hoping it’d give a little run down on the lore but it basically leaves me with: “In DOOM, you're a space marine, one of Earth's toughest, hardened in combat and trained for action. He and his body cast were shipped to Pearl Harbor, while you were transferred to Mars, home of the Union Aerospace Corporation. It was a deliberate choice for doom, you could read the manual in earlier iD games but they wanted jump in and play

There might’ve been a copy of the manual for doom as a separate readme file but there wasn’t an in game readme viewer like for commander keen or wolf 3d

although it's a bit weird the latest doom port has like half of the manual's story in the blurb but left out the whole "they did teleportation experiments and demons teleported into there"

OG DOOM doesn't feel repetitive, at least with good maps

I think Wolf 3D is when it gets into repetitive territory

It is actually very remarkable how much variety of encounters the original DOOM enemy palette can create in conjunction with clever map design

TLDR: UAC runs teleportation experiments between Phobos and Deimos, they accidentally contact Hell, subjects come out the other side delirious and crazy. Hell invades through the Deimos Gateway, absorbs the planet, then Doomguy is shipped from Mars itself to Phobos to figure shit out with his buddies, who all die. E1M1 happens.
