Doom 3 is part of the Doom multiverse. It's canon to Doom. It doesn't take place within the same "Earthly realm" as Doom 1993 or the modern Doom games, but it connects to the same Hell as always and features lore that directly ties into Doom 2016.

Doom's canon, being a multiverse, means that Doom 3 can be canon even though its personal timeline does not align with the other histories we see from the UAC or Mars or whatever.
It's set in another universe that's getting invaded by the same Hell as in the old and modern games. We see the original Doomguy in the hieroglyphs, further strengthening the connection, and all evidence points to Doom 3's Martians being the Argenta.

To be fair Ultimate is worth criticizing in some areas. They could stand to update the game regularly with content beyond spirits. It does not have to be DLC. There is no reason they couldn't be updating the game by adding music from newer Nintendo releases. This is the same problem I had with 4. 4 was relatively well balanced until a few DLC releases. Despite several balance patches they never bothered to re-evaluate the balancing when they were done with DLC, and Cloud and Bayonetta ended up dominating the whole thing by the time they stopped updating it. I feel the same thing happened with Ultimate unfortunately, it's just here it's Steve and a couple others.

But I don't see the appeal of Kazuya in Smash and his moveset is "we basically just ported Tekken to Smash." Many DLC fighters are the other way around. Smash is adapting to them and I don't like that design philosophy. Kazuya did not need the entire Tekken control scheme ported to Smash, and Steve did not need an entire crafting system added to the game.

I would've loved to see some more diverse fighter picks, like Crash Bandicoot or a Resident Evil character - those would've been fun. But instead the DLC often had characters that feel very similar. Just in Ultimate alone, you have six DLC fighters that are sword-wielding characters from RPG / aRPG games, though I guess Joker doesn't have a sword. Three fighting game characters, if we are being technical.

because using just the pistol is unfun and boring

using just the ssg and gauss in 2016 made me kill things fast so it wasn’t actively unfun

yea it’s pretty useless, especially heatblast, I think when fully upgraded it’s around 16 ammo per tier or something like that, so should be 48 for a fully charged heatblast, 700 damage, 1400 with a successful Yeetblast done with hotswapper, and 2800 if there’s a Yeetblast done without it. and I it’d be really weird to pour weapon points into heat blast before the acquisition of hotswapper, but even at theoretical best, firing base plasma for 3-4 seconds at 48 ammo for a hypothetical 2800 as opposed to dblade which takes around 1.5 seconds to fully charge, only 2 more ammo, and 2400 damage, it’s like it’s crazy that we need a 4x damage boost just to put it on the same level as a weapon you get in liek the 5th level, and if you want to give dblade another advantage, it also has weapon tech, with fast dblade you’ll easily charge it in less than 1 second, marginally increasing its hypothetical effectiveness, also, base fire is literally useless and microwave beam is used just to make people feel special like a Prius driver or something
