I know some disagree, but IMO the direction Hugo's taking for the prequels, being "let's just pick this era and tell some neat stories in it" rather than focusing on showing all the important stuff is a very, very good idea.

I appreciate that the franchise's best villain, Ahzrak, who feels like the ultimate fucking bad guy in TDA, by the end was honestly little more than a footnote in the Unholy Wars. The dude was one of many attempted rulers, just one of many bad guys he ended up killing. The things that would happen in the years after TDA were so much worse and so much more important... but during TDA, it feels like nothing really compares to just, the Slayer's dragon dying.

The soul factory and the Argent Energy stuff I don't mind us focusing on, because unlike a lot of ideas people have, this one actually fits the span of time TDA is set in. It also is hardly mentioned by Eternal's Codex, giving us a lot of freedom. Eternal only goes into covering the discovery of Nekravol - there's room for us to discover other soul factories beforehand and simply not confirm the Maykrs are behind it.

I like that we aren't hyping up the DLC as the big huge revelation where we'll see Marok die at the end, and then the civil war starts, etc etc... and suddenly these big concepts that have been in the background have been put on-screen and are actually... a lot less impressive than what we thought they'd be.

If that makes sense, anyway?

I guess what I'm saying is that when you look at the Slayer's implied backstory as a whole, it is meant to cover a fucking long time, perhaps too long, and I appreciate that Hugo isn't jumping to condensing all of that time into one game and a DLC like I think some expected for the sake of fanservice and shit. TDA retains that feeling that the overall timeline still covers a ton of ground that the games only really show a fraction of, and I like that feeling of how grand the story is. I was really worried TDA would ruin that feeling before it came out.

With the stream hints we've got so far it definitely seems like the DLC is less of a standalone side story and more of a direct build up to a Civil War sequel game. They're in the process of establishing some of the foundational story elements that lead to the war (Maykrs betraying the Sentinels, the Sentinels' distrust of the Maykrs, the creation of Hell's Soul Factories and the origins of Argent Energy) so I do expect the expansion to have an open Doom 2016 type ending where you defeat the overall villain but don't necessarily get a conclusion to the much larger ongoing conflict

I know Hugo was saying he wanted to keep things open-ended to explore more of this era. But I honestly haven't considered the actual possibility of another Sentinel game. I feel like it'd start to sting a bit more if it were further cemented how much better the story for the Sentinel stuff is, compared to the actual, more traditional Doom-setting games being so... sparce by comparison.

The first two games introduce the Sentinels, show us they're the main reason the Slayer's so pissed, that he's surprisingly fond of them (kneeling to Novik), that he's really fucking pissed at the Maykrs, that the Slayer started as an Outlander and ended up becoming their hero. TDA delivers on showing us all this.

Can't really dump the story in here (since that's a codex channel discussion) but it's mentioned that each time a group of Sentinels returned to Argent Dnur after an expedition into Hell, they found that their homeworld had changed significantly while they were away. That does lead into a level of neglect where they were so focused on fighting the enemy that they failed to see the deceit brewing beneath their noses

Like, to me, TDA's Tether alone is so much better than any of the other stuff we thought the game would've had.
To me, showing the Slayer mentally chained, brainwashed by the Maykrs, devoting a decent amount of time to showing us him struggling to break free, him ultimately finding the strength to do so by thinking about his people and saving them, recontextualizing his silence and struggle as something more rooted in trauma than we thought...

This was the ultimate payoff to the Slayer shattering the Father's Life Sphere in TAG1.

Like TDA has so, so many things that show us why he did this. It's much more satisfying than any written explanation they could've given us in Eternal itself. The Slayer gladly murdered who is essentially God, and by proxy committed genocide on an entire race of angels. And people spent years asking why, and TDA shows us that. It shows us this when we see the Kreed happily abandoning the Sentinels while keeping their hero chained up and listening to them suffering.

It's so fucking cool and feels so rewarding. It's refreshing to actually feel like a story is rewarding you for paying attention and investing in it. Doom does this for me.

I honestly don't. Like, given everything we know about the Father, I think the Slayer made a very morally ambiguous choice here. The Maykrs only descended into their horseshit when the Father left. The Father only ever wanted to help, he betrayed Davoth for probably the right reasons, and we know from the Codex he was incredibly powerful.

I think, personally, if the Slayer had done what Samur asked, or resurrected both Life Spheres, things would've been easier on him.

...but then he thinks of the Maykrs coming back. And that's enough to say no.

I think it's interesting to imagine that the Maykrs doomed themselves millennia ago when they tormented this poor guy. Their choice doesn't fully catch up to them until TAG1, when the Slayer finally shatters any hope of Urdak and the Maykrs coming back. It's an ambiguous choice and perhaps the wrong one, but it was the inevitable one. You can't blame the Slayer for doing this any more than you can blame nature. It was inevitable and the Maykrs have nobody to blame but themselves.

No yeah I totally agree. Hell is a comfortable evil to fight. They're still the Slayer's ultimate enemies and they're the main cause to blame for all the evil shit happening here. But ultimately it's the Maykrs who are responsible for the things directly motivating the Slayer's rage.
Like I said - the demons took everything from him. But Eternal's Codex implies Doomguy could've healed from this. The Maykrs stole Doomguy's destiny. They took control from him. They stole any chance he had of healing from what happened. And they chose this.

IMO the Father's choice to be stolen from Urdak was for two reasons:

1. He was afraid of the demons finding him, as said in the Codex.
2. He watched the Maykrs descend into immorality, and deemed them unworthy.

This is something else I really like. Again, the Father was never leader of the Maykrs. He was their god. An important thing in that dynamic, in many depictions of gods, is the notion that you pay tribute to this deity, you are grateful to it, you worship it, you give glory to it, and if you are worthy you remain under its light.

The original version of Hell wasn't fire and brimstone or eternal torment. It was simply life without God. Life without divinity or purpose. That was what Hell was meant to be. That's what the Maykrs have done to themselves. They lost their path and the Father considered them unworthy, and so he was more than happy to leave Urdak, knowing he would doom their race in the process.

A fun thing: they don't in Eternal. IIRC, Eternal's Maykr characters either just broadly worship the Maykrs or they worship the Khan.

It's interesting because the only time we hear the Sentinels actually acknowledge the Father as an existing character is the Blood Swamps, with Sentinels journeying here to meet him. If not for this, you wouldn't be remiss to assume the Sentinels simply worshipped the Khan. In fact she called herself the Mother God IIRC. Or they called her this.

since you can go with almost any weapon you want and still win in TDA

but to really master eternal you have to take advantage of demon weak points, know some fairly complex tech, know what weapon mod is best for each situation and ofc combos

i'd say that parrying is still one of the hardest mechanics they've implemented in a doom game, you do get the hang of it fairly quickly tho

I was thinking about this and I think that one reason why TDA was easier to master than Eternal was because we understood how mechanic driven Eternal was and we adapted that learning style to TDA.

Here’s another question: If TDA was released after 2016 instead of Eternal, would TDA be hard to master?
