I recognize the irony of what I'm about to say and it's gonna be a wall of text, I'm sorry in advance. But dear god, I need to stop hanging around in online spaces for things I enjoy. It makes me feel insane for liking things. XD
I know none of the new doom games stories are "poetry" but I feel like Dark Ages story gets dunked on by some way too hard.
My current sticking point is people being unhappy that the Slayer "fails a lot." Probably doesn't help that it's a transitional period for the Slayer, who has just gotten his sanity back, before being empowered and then shoved into Maykr Control.
Because of that, he takes actions that are safer, and somewhat less bombastic as he grows into his Slayer shoes and acclimates to the fact that he can now do even more than he ever could before, on top of being around a people who he cares about and who actively want to help him.
This results in a tamer Slayer overall with less bite, but it's only because it's an origin story. So why do we dislike the fact that we are watching a burgeoning version of this character come into his own? I expect it's because of the rep of the character, and the lack of care for Doom's story in general. Which ultimately is also fine because everyone knows the primary draw of Doom, but infuriating for me because it leads to conclusions about the game and character that I, as a hyper nerd ass, am irritated by because they are incomplete.
I don't know man. I'm just invested and I like so much of this. I hate stewing in this. XD The only opinion about media that should ultimately matter to me is my own. It's just a game, I need to calm down. None of it's real. But I care. And maybe it's the problem that I care too much. XD

TDA's story I honestly think is objectively the best in the series.
By virtue of it being a serious narrative that has more emotional depth to it than the others.
And I'm sorry but the Slayer "failing a lot" is a good thing and kind of the bare minimum of storytelling. There are supposed to be stakes. The protagonist can't be literally perfect. There have to be ups and downs in the story and there should be a sense of danger or urgency that he could actually lose.

I would argue 2016 and Eternal, mainly Eternal, could have been seriously improved by bothering to show scenes depicting the Slayer struggling in a fight occasionally.
If they were writing Eternal post-TDA I guarantee they'd have done this, at the very least, in the Icon of Sin and Davoth fights.

I think the reason why the slayer "fails" quite a lot in TDA is because there's little to no planning involved
they just send him down and tell him "go deal with it"
and even the couple times where there was planning they dont even bother to fill doomguy in on the plan
they treat him like a mindless beast for most of the game
meanwhile in eternal doomguy basically works all on his own so he doesnt have to depend on anyone, attacks key targets and locations instead of getting distracted by a million random things, and also he probably has a lot more experience by then

I don't mind the Slayer being nigh unstoppable in the other games, since by that point like others have mentioned he has had a lot of time to be on his own and has even more knowledge and experience in fighting Hell. The unstoppability of the Slayer is one of my favorite traits about him.
But I believe he should be failing and having a hard time in Dark Age's narrative. It makes sense, and contributes to his origin as the unstoppable force he becomes. It's compelling and interesting.

I’m one of those people and I love the narrative story of The Dark Ages, the idea of Ahzrak being even more powerful than the Slayer gives it higher stakes
And it makes the story better when you finally succeed
The Slayer is just a buff human that was given the strength of a demigod and near-immortality
It’s his rage and unwavering conviction that allows him to move forward, how he is so angry and motivated that he completely disregards all pain
I believe the depiction of him being the Super-Weapon for Sentinels and Maykrs nailed most of the story for me

parrying a single projectile is way too simple of an action for the enormous payoff you get with rune activation
probably this game's most egregious balance misstep

I think the daggers were originally meant to be wolves
but they couldn't figure out how to make their pathing consistent
but they kept the absurdly high damage in the game though lol
imo, it would've been a better decision (both gameplay- and balance-wise) to give us a bar of some sorts on your shield that refills in varying amounts from killing enemies or parrying attacks, and when the bar fills up completely, you can activate your shield rune
maybe that's a little far-fetched in a doom game, but idk, I feel like it would add a bit more depth to the combat than just "parry a projectile to get free damage"
don't get me wrong, I love the game's combat, but I'm just spitballing here
well, I think the runes could be more evenly balanced to begin with

Heaven splitter and daggers are more powerful options
obviously heaven splitter and holy swarm are absurdly powerful
but even ground fissure is pretty insane
that'd be down to balancing
make each rune feel more unique instead of just being free damage
I feel like the turret should just give you a bunch of health
make ground fissure lean more into armor
auto turret could pierce enemies and lean more into health drops
heaven splitter could lean more into the shock status effect instead of just stunlocking everything in the arena for an eternity

the way damage is scaled in TDA would make infighting be a little weird
because the slayer deals literal thousands of damage with his guns and melee, whereas demons don't deal anywhere near that much
an agaddon overhead swing wouldn't even kill a fodder imp, for example
in 2016 and eternal, the damage actually scaled somewhat similarly, but in TDA they just decided to add a zero on the end of all of our damage values and enemy health bars for whatever reason
He parries and a wolf possesses a demon and that demon's damage increases a bunch against other demons until it dies or the wolf moves on to another demon

What if you could customize ur shield rune to play into what u want, imagine u had like a bar up to 10 for each rune and lets say u change the turret's damage and u can spend 1-5 on that, then u can spend idk like 7 for a perk that would make demons killed by the turret drop health, and like more stuff so u can change the turrets abilities to ur liking but u have a max amount of points for obvious balance reasons and each ability or modifier would cost a certain amount

I wasn’t sure initially because the dlc’s were originally advertised as not really a direct continuation, so i didn’t want to rely on a future game to make up for the abrupt ending

you complete the story, all the main threats are stopped and primary plot points are concluded. everything else was more of a side thing that may or may not be explored at a later point

Personally I think the fight’s music shifting to the slayer’s theme for the final phase was pretty peak
the biggest unspoken W I've had in regards to both Doom Dark Ages and Eternal is that now if i get bored/angry at one of them I can just switch to the other. Before if i got mad at Eternal i was kind of stuck there but now that I have two power fantasy cakes I can just go back and fourth between them.
No 2016 doesn't count, it's too basic compared to TDA and Eternal (Still fun mind you)

I'm having problems with my Doom Dark Ages, for some reason now when I'm launching, it sets "Out of range" for my monitor.
I already tried to force a windowed and small resolution throught Steam launch parameters, but it doesnt work.
I don't know why this happens now, the last time I play, It was fine.
Also, the textbox when launching says theres a driver error with the Graphics card, specifically with ReShade... but i Never install reshade in Dark Ages, and it wasnt a problem before

@obsidian shard lowkey after you pointed it out and showed the video and after I tried relistening to a few tracks (just kinda browsing over em, not full listens) i kinda realized its not really a bad ost.
While I dont think its as visionary or memorable as mick's score, the sounds present in tracks like "when the shadows first lengthened" are quite interesting, and the guitar tone itself (to me it feels honestly kinda like a less crunchy more noise-ish tone, like thrash but less greasy) is certainly nothing like what the doom franchise, or basically any other game I've played, is accustomed to.
