Better play first on default sliders , after getting the feel of the game you may start experimenting with values. Intended experience isn't as janky as at higher game speeds.

oh and when ever you get a new weapon use it as much as posible at first so you can learn where to use it, dont worry if you die, just use it riight when you get it so you figure it out, then use what ever you were already comfortable wioth

i use all the weapon classes, for me the one i use most is shotgun class, then rocket/plasma classes equally, then impaler class, then skull/chain shot classes.

some enemies i think take more damage from certain weapons, its something ive def noticed, ask @green estuary 😄

when he lays out knowledge i listen and then push that knowledge to the limits 🤘

well I have a rough idea
by the end of hebeth, I like to have ricochet purchased for the shredder as well as the first shield and gaunglet upgrade
the first ruby I get in sentinel barracks I also put towards the shredder, and I also specifically get the first upgrade for the accelerator and a couple more shield/melee upgrades to prepare for the vagary fight
after that point, all my upgrades go towards the super shotgun and the final shield upgrades; by the end of the holy city, I like to have 2 of the 3 upgrades purchased for the SSG, also maybe throwing in an upgrade or two for the cycler if I have the money
abyssal forest isn't too noteworthy, but I always use the wraithstone in the ancestral forge for the SSG mastery and also start saving up gold and rubies for the rocket launcher in the next level
Ideally you should have at least 250 gold and 2 rubies heading into the forsaken plains so you can get the first two rocket launcher upgrades immediately and then get the wraithstone upgrade for it later on

after that, upgrades are fairly plentiful, so I just get the cycler, shredder, and then the ravager upgraded whenever I can

same with the first two shield runes--I stick with holy swarm when I have plenty of stack left but switch to ground fissure when I need the armor

and I pretty much use the gauntlets for the whole playthrough, but getting the dreadmace upgraded for kreed/ahzrak is fairly easy if you really want to

I do too and was able to on Pandemonium and UN until the Spire of Nerathul. From that level forward is when I finally stopped because there is no reason to risk a life or run on the extra life that’s guarded by a Komodo and a respawning battle knight. Same goes for the optional Belly of the Beast Encounter and the gore nest in Reckoning. Those are the big three off the top of my head I avoided.

As far as upgrades go, I went all in the shield first to get it up to where it regens quicker, as far as melee and weapons go, I don’t think there is really a wrong way to go depending upon what you like. I saved gold for the flail and used it until I got the dread mace. I also upgraded ground fissure and daggers to maxed and swapped between them depending upon the situation. Weapons I upgraded quickly were the SSG, impaler, cycler, RL, and chainshot. Pincushion on shredder helped a lot as well. Accelerator is also busted a few upgrades in

Personally I like to see it as just a matter of art style change. And I also personally don't think the armor he had when he got to Argent D'Nur is set in stone; I think they went with the original armor for the Eternal cutscene and Codex image because it was more recognizable and would get the point across instantly.

My slightly (not really) controversial take is I think they are the same armor, and D64's looking different is just because 64 has a different art style in general to reflect its darker tone.

An example of the art style thing is IIRC Doomguy is a bit shorter in Doom 64. Not monumentally, but enough that normal soldiers feel significantly taller than you. I think that is an art style thing, Doomguy didn't get shorter and the demons didn't get bigger, but he is going through PTSD Deluxe right now and so I think on a subconscious level he feels a bit vulnerable or in danger in a way he didn't in the others. So that reflects it.

I think the artstyle thing works for a handful of demons. Zombiemen, Shotgunners, Pinkies, Barons/Knights and Cyberdemons are the ones I'd say are the same as Doom/Doom II, just changed by art style

since they "lost" their first attempt at invading that universe it makes sense that they would bring in even stronger units the second time around

Part of it is a bit weird and it's an issue I have with 64's story, albeit a very small one, which is that the demons are canonically all supposed to be the resurrected corpses of demons killed the first time they tried invading Mars and its moons. Awesome idea but

1. Is it all the demons or just the ones we encounter prior to our visit to Hell?
2. This seemingly only works if Doom 64 is set on Phobos, yet plenty of marketing info seems to claim it takes place on Mars itself.
3. Why be so vague as to if the radiation came from the Mother Demon, or the UAC trying to wipe out the place?

It is a bit difficult to reconcile. I always liked to think that 64 Pain Elementals are mutated Cacodemon corpses fused together, hence the separate mouths and red skin, while 64 Cacodemons are mutated Pain Elemental corpses that lost their ability to vomit Lost Souls, hence the brown skin and arms.
