The reason why the idea is so appealing to me is bc it's a blank slate. All we know is that he rampaged. You can add so much areas, focus on his grief and suffering, not bog down gameplay with too many cutscenes. You can do so much
Hell is a collection of realms. When you think of Hell, it's not fire and brimstone only, it's a melting pot of different conquered realms and with that comes different aesthetics
He needs a new mission instead of "kill anything that comes from hell"

I get what you're going for and I love the creativity behind it man. Diversity within hell or the narrative themes they could explore have no impact on how I feel though. Part of the appeal and mystique of that time period is that we know next to nothing about it, and I think it should stay that way permanently

They need something like a hexen or heretic 3, I think if they had the doom and hexen universe connected(idk if it already is or not) I think that would be good variety, especially for different character classes and enemies

On the dev streams, they said that the dlc will not be difficult as in Eternal, so there is no point in waiting, except for the sake of the plot
The most important thing is some variation of the horde mode and master levels, so that players can at least challenge themselves somewhere
at least ur cooking still so keep it up 
u dont need the dlc to be the same difficulty as eternal's dlc.
Hugo said it still will be harder than the base game, and the base game is getting harder with the recent updates and balance stuff. Base sliders imo should be in a good state with the QC update, and max sliders will be a pretty big challenge with the dlc lol.
But i agree with the horde mode/master levels stuff, hopefully we get enough on that front to have a decent amount of the greater challenge those would provide (also according to hugo so ye)
Regarding the QC update, there are rumors about minor weapon edits, but not sliders and a potential first master level - the village of Kalim and that’s it. Why, do they want to make the parry window even less?
They want to make that an option for people who like that sort of challenge

Master levels in Eternal practically killed me, I don’t know how to use quickswitch, so I barely closed the cultist base on the nightmare
earlier master levels were better imo, it just got too ludicrous later on

I hope there will be no Aggadon’s hounds in the master levels, such a boring mob, it’s almost impossible to kill it quickly, you need to choose a combination, plus the gameplay slows down by waiting for parrying, as if the marauder was not so infuriating

No it's still worth it. Hugo doesn't want it hard to the point that it closes off those who want to experience the expansion casually. Since they are releasing master levels and balancing around acts 2 and 3, I'd expect the dlc to still be a fairly challenging experience. Btw, Hugo also said it will hold the smartest, most well thought combat encounters in the game, having that after some master levels only means good things

If u meant the act 2 and 3 balance stuff, yes they are overall increasing the difficulty of the last 2 thirds of the game
They did this for act 1, aka first third of the game
Plus, they are balancing your character to compensate sorta

yeah i ended up practicing that on my nightmare save beforehand and struggled a lot, ended up being a lot easier on pandemonium even though i died a few times
my first playthrough i did with minimum parry window which helps a bit i think, as went for default sliders on pandemonium

Hey everyone, new to the chat but I’m needing a bit of help. I’m trying to get my Xbox account linked to Bethesda’s and it says in my linked accounts that it’s connected but whenever I boot up dark ages it’s telling me that there’s an entirely different account linked and I can’t figure out a way to change it. I’ve tried contacting Bethesda’s support but they haven’t been able to help at all.
Sick!!! I was a lil dummy and went straight to UN before pandemonium, so I still have to do that at some point, but I like going for the harder stuff right off rip. Its so much more fun to full send the BS mode haha
My first two got to the armored pinkie that gives you the health buff where you first learn about armor, the third got to siege part 1, fourth got to cosmic realm, fifth got to ahzrak, sixth killed ahzrak on his first run around and then I died to something stupid on the next level, then seventh I had the combat loop down enough by then that I cleared. I really enjoyed it, it felt fair and balanced as opposed to when I tried UN on doom eternal. I don't have the time to sink 500+ hours into a game to learn one campaign. I'll only do that on a survival game or something over the span of a year or so.

Honestly, it is way faster to master because once you learn how to build your slayer and treat it like an RPG or buildcrafting game, it gets way easier imo
I have a lot of time in destiny 2, and the way that shield play interacts with both add clearing and stun locking really clicked with me. I use the shield probably more than I use my guns, but if you want an almost guaranteed UN dub, use the impaler

I didn't know that actually. I thought you had to kill it to get the barrier down. I'd have to replay it again because my memory of it is kinda foggy, I've been stuffing it with stuff for my cert exam and pushed pretty much any other knowledge out haha

Probably not. My memory of it is hazy. It is the fight with the pinkie rider that comes out of the portal with armor, after killing everything in the arena after jumping out of the sentinel facility. I actually think its the same one you get the acellerator from.

that room is actually not bad once you get the hang of it. ricochet does work
yeah, and having parries do AOE hard falters from first shield upgrade is great for it too. gives you breathing room.

This one was honestly my favorite doom, because it felt like its combat had the most time put into it before anything else. It felt extremely polished, well planned (except for the strength of the impaler), and the story was amazing as a doom lore nerd.
It gave me exactly what I was wanting out of the game, every single drop of it.

I had some points I disagreed with in his review of the game, but I have some interesting thoughts on the design philosophy behind the combat.
ahh you’ll have that. won’t agree on everything. though people will find ways to hate on dark ages just to argue it feels like
Master levels with random AI would be good so it would be different every time
He at least put it out there with good points and constructive feedback, so I don't really have any need to directly disagree with him, and plan to continue working with him on it

Heya Samir, several folk in the community have mentioned it could be interesting to explore this idea. I am curious to know what the internal feedback ends up being if id Software try it out. It could end up being one of those things that sounds good in our heads but ends up not working out. I'm glad Hugo seemed receptive to the idea because as the saying goes "nothing ventured nothing gained".
I think a change like this might allow the encounters to become a bit crazier and it might allow the skill ceiling to go even higher. One thing I'd say is that The Dark Ages succeeded in creating a more learnable set of systems compared to Eternal. Because many of the core ways to succeed at the game revolve around one tool rather than several I just think its a 'better' system, if your goal is to allow as many players as possible to 'master' the game that is. But there's just some changes that tinker at the edges which might afford the game a higher skill ceiling and I think shielded swaps on successfully executing another mechanic (like parrying) could help here. It would also help with conditioning players to parry more often if they feel like they can swap weapons after a parry. It's also not a trade-off entirely in the players favor, because you can't shoot your gun whilst its swapping, but you can obviously block.
Anyway, sorry for the long essay but I appreciate its a late reply so wanted to make it a decent one.
I believe I also heard that they were working on a change to allow you to continue using your shield while swapping weapons, which in my opinion would be a lot better for the game's identity. I don't think the game needs to lean into a mechanic that makes it more like doom eternal, it needs a mechanic that makes it more like doom the dark ages. More shield play while giving the player options during weapon swaps is the exact kind of change this game needs

Eternal and 2016 are more oriented towards a quake 3 arena gameplay
well the most biggest reason is about it's combat system. first they have deleted glory kills. glory kills had lots of variants, which made me fell every kill SPECIAL. second they have added shield. I know, parrying or smth is cool but.. it's not the doom i knew before. and also they are making slower game speed, which loses the fun of previous dooms.
Hell, hordes of enemies, ssg point blank oneshotting 3 imps, the big fucking crossbow working like the og bfg!

You can still get the original glory kills in some instances
Glory kills were considered for TDA. However, given the combat loop and the amount of enemies, they found it jarring, and I’d take their word for it given that id knows what they’re doing when it comes to game design and that playing the game myself, it would ruin the pacing of the combat. It was actually a criticism in 2016 and Eternal too. Not saying glory kills are bad, I’m just saying there have been critiques for it. The shield is a new addition but so was the Meathook, which allowed for more aerial combat, which was not in the classics. This leads to why TDA is more closer to the classics: the movement and constant projectile dodging. You are constantly moving in between projectiles and you are quite grounded. Movement along the horizontal plane is more emphasised than ever. This is what you’re doing most of the time in the classics, which is why I believe TDA is not only a good Doom game, but also the one that pays homage to the classics the most
id is one of the developers I’ve seen who takes community reception to account more. They would definitely know how much glory kills mean for the community and they would not take it out unless it is for a good reason

well the combo stuff isnt tied to the finishers but just talking about what the melee system in general which is so much better than the blood punch + you arent locked in on finishers now, u can turn while you punch/kick when u finish off demons

It makes sense as well. Normal melee attacks by video game standard should cause effective damage. I found the normal punch in Eternal weird considering how minuscule the damage was. I get it is for the combat loop but it still feels off. Melee should still give small to moderate damage, not miniscule

I think giving up glory kills was a sound idea, in fact, now the gameplay feels seamless, they would just like to add a couple of animations, otherwise 1 kick with a foot and a shield is too boring

maybe something they can dig into with their next game, have more glorykills but make it optional like it is right now, either by jumping or tying it to a separate keybind so that you can perform glory kills whenever u feel like it, and otherwise u press the normal keybind for the normal finishing move (pun intended :d)
Yes. I am not a fan of crystal clear mixes, but this is not good enough. Guitars get buried, vocals get buried, violins get buried any instrument that is not the drums is getting buried in the mix most of the times.
The music is decent it's just hard to hear because of the mixing choices. This is less of a problem when listening to the OST outside the game (although still not good enough for me) but in-game it's too far from perfect. I have needed to reduce everything's volume back to 60-70% and leave the music on 100% to have a somewhat similar cut through with the music that I have expected - and ofc. that didn't fix the mixing problems of the music itself, just at least I was able to hear it better in-game
...and yeah, I love the OST, musically. I hear the good ideas and the effort, Finishing Move did their homework. It's just need a better mix.
also the Dynamic Music Module could use a bit of finetuning as I still experience latency with the music, sometimes it completely misses the action, sometimes it starts playing heavy bits while I am just wandering around looking for secrets and literally no enemies are around.

I see what you mean but I believe the decision to not include it was because it just didn’t fit with the gameplay loop. You have sliders of course, but glory kill modification changes everything. The sliders customise the experience but they aren’t meant to specifically alter the design, only enhance it

Are you talking about Acolytes? Yeah those dudes are annoying, and some arenas don’t have proper bounds in place. Like the Gore Nest challenge in the Reckoning mission lets one teleport outside the arena. You literally can’t kill it, and it won’t teleport out. Only feasible solution is a BFC shot to the face.

I was not able to figure out how to remove the light on the Slayer's face in the cutscenes yet. The cinematics system seems to be much more complex compared to Eternal's and it's going to take some time to figure out how to change things in them.

Eh. Even early winter is pushing it. I wouldn’t expect it to drop until Jan/Feb of next year. Eternal’s DLC 1 took 6 months to release, which is likely smaller than what TDA’s is going to be simply due to the greater scale of this game and its environments.

If they know better, they would drop the dragon. The best thing to do with Serrat is include some sort of flashback ooorrrr let him ride that dragon from TAG 2. For the Atlan, they really need to work on that this dlc or drop it as well. For the rest, they need time for that
Even if development got a couple month’s head start on the DLC, I wouldn’t expect it to be finished within 6 months. The sheer scale and level of detail is beyond what Eternal or 2016 achieved with its environments. I’d also imagine the AI is more complex than in the previous two games.

dunno if you noticed but they even added AI damage to the enemies dotted around the map. There's a vagary you can kill with Serrat, so they coded in damage values for it.

I was not able to figure out how to remove the light on the Slayer's face in the cutscenes yet. The cinematics system seems to be much more complex compared to Eternal's and it's going to take some time to figure out how to change things in them.

most of the mouth animation isnt as "expressive" as the rest of his face. like compare to how other characters mouth move in this game compared to the slayer. i really do think its just to get the facial expressions right for the eyes and brow. though for the "run" part i think that was added in later, though i do remember hugo saying in a stream that there was even more dialogue before

Just me or does doom the dark ages actually have 2 references to My house wad in the cosmic realm levels? There's an infinite looping hallway in Karthul Marshes where if you turn around you reach an entirely different room than the one you started in. There's also a similar non euclidean room in temple of lomarith where moving forward takes you to a dead end but turning around transports you to a different room without us even realising.
While i do think id devs know about my house wad, it’s probably something more akin to lovecraft’s conception of maddening worlds to navigate through

They're absolutely not related in capacity, those sections are like silent portal stuff in GZDoom which is really cool tho. Cosmic Realm is supposed to make no sense to us so noneuclidian geometry and other impossible structures & places are right at home in this eldritch dimension of incomprehensible horrors.
