I will say, Finishing Move's work really grew on me, especially after the patch that adjusted the volume of the music. I think Finishing Move gets a lot of unnecessary flack on a account of the whole debacle.
That said, I really like David's work, and I like what he did here. The melodic synth phrases are something that I feel was really missing from Finishing Moves work, and Andrew's pieces, and it's something that David retains. So I really like his go around, but I will say Finishing Move made a very intentional choice with their pieces that I can't see Dark Ages without.
Symphonic elements. Blood Red is a great example. The symphonic elements in Finishing Move's work really evoke the high, dark fantasy vibes of this game amazingly, and it feels vital to Dark Age's specific identity. So if David does more, I'd love to hear how he would work that into his own pieces.

I agree with everything except the synth elements. I'm not opposed to synth but it should be less high pitch and more uniquely used. The synth David uses for Thronebreaker is the same exact synth used in Trial of Maligog, and it's not as effective here. The riffs are bitcrunchy and brutal and the chants remind me of little nightmares for some reason but I love that. Finishing move does include melodies but they're done in different ways, it uses distorted guitar like the slayers theme or into the void. I think with a bigger budget David can lean into the more medieval orchestral parts but as it stands, it sounds like an immora track really
ive said this since the beginning, finishing move exceeded my expectations like crazy, and they made tracks that fit perfect imo
David working symphonic elements into his work would be the best of both worlds, and in my opinion as close to Mick Gordon as we'll probably ever get again.
Mick gordon is known for his production and mix quality, whether synth or orchestral is doesn't matter

Also, don't discount the quality of modern Orchestral sample libraries. Trust me, a guy with his ability and position in the industry probably has access to some kick ass orchestral sounds.

I do agree with that as well. Even between Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal there is a clear difference in musical identity. 2016 is very grungy and tight sounding, with some sweeping big sounds.
Eternal's music, like the game, has many more facets and complexities making it more bombastic and varied.
Dark Ages is back to a 2016 esque, tight, grunge but fused with orchestra, and folk instruments, and with formula variation present for the cosmic realm to make it sound truly strange and alien, much like the Urdak pieces in eternal.

definitely! Integrated mouse joycons are a BIG feature for many FPS players trying to go handheld, better than gyro. I think the shooter market can explode on that console

I have an interesting thought for a split upgrade for the Grenade Launcher.
Trick Shot (paired with cluster upgrade)
Grenades falter nearby demons with each bounce. Cataclysm upgrade empowers bounced grenades
I feel like the Grenade Launcher only focuses on direct hits and cluster bombs, and think there can be a lot of fun in using the bouncy nature of the projectile

The idea is that grenade bounces falter or even damage demons in the hitbox demonstration of the RL
This turns the grenade launcher into a full crowd control option, as opposed to direct damage with a side of crowd control.

I think the weapons are fine in TDA, because it's more about the shield for me, as well as learning to get in close and use the melee weapons.
It usually tells you on the PlayStation when you hover over the game icon and there's something like an update report.

Great. Lost my 100% UN run because my shockwave triggered a barrel that a demon kicked towards me as I was landing. One of the unluckiest things I’ve ever witnessed in gaming.
Had over 100 HP and didn’t get caught at the 5hp threshold too.

This is why I stand by my sentiment that Eternal is the easiest modern Doom game by far.
And I don’t understand how so many consider it that difficult when it constantly saves you from death and resources are abundant.
TDA feels like 2016 all over again, killing you instantly from random bullshit.
Idk man 2016 was easier for me with things like gauss cannon and BFG

On Nightmare you can easily die in 3-4 hits. It’s a simpler game, but it’s a lot more punishing when you make mistakes. You might as well be dead if you drop to critical levels because the tight resources and sniper-projectiles will likely kill you before you can regain any control over the fight. Same applies with TDA. Eternal you could get to 10hp and get back up to full with a couple well timed equipment uses.
Not to mention all the extra movement tools you have to create space.
Bottom line is: The 5hp buffer in this game is practically nonexistent with how few conditions actually catch you.

Based on concept art by Alejandro Mirabal, there would’ve been a boss fight against “three brothers” who would’ve been fused together as an undead amalgamation (kind of resembling Geryon from Greek mythology).
Though I’m curious to know, did this boss eventually get retooled into the Komodo? They both have similar weapons and stand in a similar hunched position.

That aside, if you check the ArtStation post for the Komodo’s concept art, the first image shows details of his chainsaw spear. On the post for the Three Brothers, the last image shows a detailed overview of their weapon, which is also the same chainsaw spear.
Something else that supports my theory of the Three Brothers being an early concept for the Komodo is how the second image for the Three Brothers depicts the left side of their combined body. It’s wearing a clawed gauntlet very similar to the one worn by the Komodo (also worth noting is the left head kind of resembling that of a Hell Knight or one of the zombie soldiers).

Interesting, I think the origin of the Super Shotgun’s Sentinel hook may be tied to the Night Sentinels’ beast-taming traditions. In early concept art and glyphs from Doom Eternal, some warriors are shown taming massive beasts with similar hooked chains. Perhaps the hook wasn’t originally a weapon, maybe it was a tool of dominance and control, used to wrangle demonic creatures and war-beasts on the battlefield.

You can still view your mission stats on UN and Pandemonium and your file still exists once you beat the game. You just cannot physically play the save files anymore

If this is your first UN playthrough, I'd recommend backing up your save file after every level. I've encountered game breaking bugs LATE in the game. Like three bugs on three separate attempts on level 21

Hard to say. I 100% each mission on Nightmare, then Pandemonium, then UN when I felt confident.
20-30 min for most levels which included backtracking and searching for gold and secrets. Spread out over about 2 weeks cause I work a lot.
The game games significantly easier at these marks: once you fully upgrade the Impaler, get the last shield Rune, get the Mace.
I see WR 100% runs just over 4 hours. Or just over 3 hours at 150% speed 🔥

I guess timeline for the games would look sorta like this:
- DOOM 1 (Demons attack Martian moons and Doomguy stops it)
- DOOM 2 (Demons attack Earth and Doomguy stops it)
- DOOM 64 (The Motherdemon is brought to life, resurrects all the dead demons, and Doomguy kills her and stays in hell)
- DOOM 64 The Lost Levels (The Sister Resurrector also exists and Doomguy kills her, a portal opens and he is flung into the Sentinel's world which is some other planet)
- Doomguy becomes part of the Sentinel world and eventually gains superpowers from the Divinity Machine becoming the Doom Slayer (you see flashbacks of this in Eternal)
- DOOM TDA (The Slayer kills the Prince of hell and stays there to continue hunting demons)
- Doom Slayer is trapped in a sarcophagus in hell is is eventually found by the UAC as they excavate hell
- DOOM 2016 (The UAC is under a demonic invasion caused by Olivia Pierce, the Slayer is awakened and stops her)
- DOOM Eternal & DLC (Earth is under invasion again and the Slayer stops it before then killing the Dark Lord and thus preventing all demons from stepping foot outside of hell)

my guess is maybe it's been a couple decades or even a millennia, plenty of time to build a reputation and reasonable enough for a sci-fi megacorp like the UAC to still be kicking
also there's always the possibility of time working differently in hell since it is another realm and not just some planet off somewhere in the universe
I think this track fits well honestly. But to me, I like Infernal chasm, Into the Void, the menu theme more than this. I think if the synth wasn't obviously the Trial of Maligog synth it could fit even better. It's just cuz it feels more TAG than the Dark Ages. David did say he's making a more orchestral track so I'd be on the look out for that.

I think some FM tracks are straight up forgettable but the ones' that hit, hit
there was a cut phase where davoth would turn into a dragon during the boss fight but time restraints and covid left this on the cutting room floor

A good theory is that the ritual served as a beacon for where he spawns. He can break out for himself but then he'll spawn in Argent Texas or zmt

What's the TLDR consensus on this game?
Still feeling like I'm forcing my way through it.....trying to push to where I feel like I'm having fun....but just getting nowhere.
Stand and fight concept just feels half baked and unrealistic. I focus a non-standard enemy, play paddy cake, and then eventually get rocked from the side or from some random projectile.
Movement feels sluggish without any double jump or dash.....so I end up clearing arenas and then look at all the armor and health I didn't even use.
Lastly, the overall game flow feels pulled between combat stages and open exploration. As someone who wants to generally attempt to find all the secrets in each level.....this detracts from a fluid experience since I'm constantly checking the map, backtracking, and sitting in rooms trying to figure out secrets that are only accessible if I progress the level further.
I like the concepts at play here, I like the demons, I like the guns, I like the shield!
Story and soundtrack we don't really need to talk about lol....
Any thoughts on the above? Any tips for a better experience?

I guess I'm feeling disconnected from the "challenge" that usually comes with doom games. I usually feel like even though I die, I can grasp what I did wrong.

If you die, it's because you aren't paying attention to your surroundings or attack telegraphing
I didn't have that much. I did have deaths where I went 'DAFUQ HIT ME?' but that is not too unique to TDA
Overall I like DOOM TDA, only Doom game i ever platted (in part because there's no blightful online-only trophies)
I'd say it's very great, even
You must stay on top of clearing the arena of smaller enemies, and take out the heavies pretty rapidly. If you're struggling to do that, use shield throw to clear adds and to stun lock heavies, and impaler to destroy heavies.

Yeah same here. It's not Mick because imo Mick would not have been the artist for this project anyway. It needed to be brutal and old school, not so much argent metal, and I think finishing move did it appropriately

Overall I'm very positive with the final product. In the past I also praised the trilogy in part because of how distinct each entry is while doing things well (DOOM 2016 the simplistic, balls-to-the-wall grindhouse entry, DOOM Eternal the post-apocalyptic heroic tale, DOOM TDA the epic sci-fi fantasy/horror entry), and the soundtrack fits TDA well

Facts. I know people will say I'm crazy but this is my favorite entry in the series. It wasn't hard for the sake of being hard (doom eternal) and it wasn't so easy that anyone can beat the hardest difficulties, with very fun combat mechanics.
I never felt Eternal was hard for the sake of being hard but it felt a bit too 'ad hoc' sometimes
I think doom 2016 is in the middle between eternal and TDA in terms of difficulty, but then again I did a no damage run and imps made me want to rip my hair out
Like, one specific approach for certain things. Of course you can fight marauders and cacodemons in different ways from the explicit ways the game advices you to, but in DOOM TDA you feel like you are the doom slayer, you don't have to adapt to enemies, enemies have to adapt to you

Oh yeah Imps are a menace on Nightmare. Tho I actually found DOOM 2016 Nightmare to only be truly fucked in the first three levels, with Siege Mode and SSG max'd and BFG ammo rune you become the boss

I had more difficulty doing a pistol-only run on the lowest difficulty. It was just fucked
The first three levels I think I "died" more than the entire playthrough
It was mostly boring tho and I also bottlenecked my run by not allowing grenades and glory kills (whereas some other pistol-only runners did allow those)
I am eventually going to do a doom TDA no damage run but only once I finish up personal life stuff for my career
Dang. That seems difficult but fun. I like the ones that strike that balance. The no damage run was just tears of pain and rage
I agree with this wholeheartedly. You choose how you do it because they are your playground
The most difficult part was tedium.
Outside of (fully charged) pistol shots, I only allowed explosive barrel damage, infighting and the explosion that happens after your power-up runs out. These count as environmental damage in my book.
Only mandatory glory kills were allowed. Fights were long. The room with all those pinkies in hell was annoying, had to perform trickery.
Ye eternal is a micro game, it's based on your character. Tda is a macro game, it's based on the enemies
Had to use mancubus and baron to infight a bit with pinkies, then use explosive barrels, then tried to take them out with my pistol
Both dabble in both respective areas but one is more than the other
That's a good way of putting it
Probably why I like TDA more
I like being able to make my own builds to optimize how I play, instead of being "forced" (I know barely anything is forced in eternal but you get the spirit behind it) into a playstyle
