I found out the issue. Apparently the final upgrade for the Shredder got unequipped.
It's a common bug that screws with the functionality of the gun.
I reequipped the final upgrade, and was able to get Pincushion to work, and now the challenge is complete lol

iirc you go to the gore nest encounter and first kill demons until one baron spawns
then ignore that baron and kill other demons until a second baron spawns

The only thing that has a function is the down d-pad for scanning the environment, the others arent used at all. In eternal, they were for switching between normal and freeze grenades, hopefully its the same here but for runes and melee in the next update if there is one

I read some papers about Id Tech 8, and it has been said that the engine has been built in order to facilitate the management of composents, especially concerning the levels
Plus, we got a modding support for Doom Eternal, which wasn't planned at first, they added it because they were impressed by how the community manage to make mods with the few low tier tools they have

you can make it work with shield saw and other falters but yeah, you wanna hold off on melee at least until you have the 3rd and 4th gauntlet hits upgraded
you can just blow off the cannons, you get infinite ammo with impaler
staying alive long enough to do that is the tricky part
mace is a nuke even at 50% damage to enemies, and i don't think the sliders change how many parries it takes to falter things
i know armor damage doesn't change either, which is a small mercy

I can’t figure out my combat strategy. I have fun with melee but shooting long range doesn’t kill as fast as I’d like so I get hit.
The weapons in this game aren’t designed to be long range. Most have short-medium range. Lot of fall off damage too. It’s to incentivize getting closer to the enemy. The game’s combat loop definitely takes a full playthrough until you start to develop your own playstyle, in my experience at least. Melee is crucial.
There are bosses in the first 3/4ths of the game, but they’re more like how the Marauder was presented in Doom Eternal.
There are actual Bosses with a health bar and all though. You won’t see them until the last act of the game.
you should start to understand just how much of a nightmare this is around level 4
the impaler pickup room got a bunch of additional enemies
an extra hell knight, a nightmare imp, and a couple of stone imps
i mean it's the only scary encounter in the level but with max sliders, everything is fucked

Third punch with melee is a guaranteed hard falter. Meaning any demon, including super heavies, will be interrupted, allowing you to follow up with another attack.

Doing it on UN so I can't replay missions. I'm on mission 13
Hit large demons in groups first with the shield, and let the shredder do the rest. It was the hardest mastery for me as I started it about halfway through as well.

I was thinking of a new mechanic that can be applicable in the DLC
I'll call it the "golden parry" mechanic. Its a type of attack or projectile that flashes gold and cannot be spam shield parried, meaning you have to be precise with the timing to deflect it and if you failed to do so, it either deals a massive damage or depletes all your shield meter. But if you are able to deflect it its a guaranteed daze on normal enemies and a massive damage to bosses/enemy leaders
That's an interesting mechanic, but i'm afraid that it will be too punitive for the average casual player (which compose the majority of the player base)
Doom Eternal DLC's already has theses types of criticisms too

As someone who has 600 hours in eternal, I still can’t see how dark ages is bad. I wasn’t going in expecting to have eternal 2.0
yeah and I want it to be balanced out by making it rare in the DLC but a frequent occurence in master levels. Since Doom doesn't really introduce new mechanic in master levels they just take in DLC mechanics and tweak it a bit to make it more difficult, it would be good to introduce this in the DLC and then make it a norm in master levels.
And I’ve really enjoyed it. The parrying mechanics are really fun especially on higher difficulty. Especially with the cyberdemon where I know it’s game over if I mess up a parry

but yeah, introduce the golden parry mechanic in DLC, but make it more like a tutorial there and go haywire with it in the master levels

Honestly the biggest problem I have with TDA boss fights is how much you can cheese them by spamming the shield parry and it would be interesting if DLC/Master levels introduce a mechanic that punishes you for doing this to certain enemy types
Seems many wanted TDA to pull a Doom 2. Be the same exact same game with extra content. Essentially a glorified DLC expansion. Expectations were “Doom Eternal but with a Shield.” There really wasn’t much room left to improve Doom Eternal’s combat. Expanding on it would only further bloat the game. A different direction was needed, and sure TDA isn’t without its flaws, but the arguments surrounding it are all about what it did different from Eternal.
This, thank you you got it. Its very hard to make Doom eternal 2 without changing the core mechanic of the game or making it bloated. Eternal was almost as balanced as it can get with the playstyle, a sequel to it would just be another DLC expansion
Which is ironic because some parts of the community aggressively stonewalled all discussion of how Eternal changed things, and suggested the only possible reason anyone could dislike those changes were personal flaws

Download custom master levels, etc. people were already complaining about the price of the game. If it was eternal 2.0, it would be the same problem people have with the cod franchise
No glory kills… No Mick Gordon… Oh no you can’t button mash 2 hotkeys to instantly kill a Cyberdemon anymore… Oh no I can use one gun to beat the game even though I’m using a variety of different tools and mechanics in conjunction with it which definitely doesn’t offset quickswapping.

I think this is why the Devs essentially gave us the tools needed to make Doom eternal levels. Because if we want more Doom eternal content its up to the modding community to do it now

Why do animations take precedence over the actual gameplay for so many players. Hell, I’d argue you have more control over the power fantasy now with the new melee system over 2016 and Eternal.

Many complain the punches and kicks are boring and uninteresting, despite their purpose being vastly different from glory kills. They’re not supposed to be a replacement. They’re not supposed to exceed glory kills in terms of style. They’re meant as a gameplay mechanic, and for you to use said mechanic to do the cool shit yourself. You can never string attacks together in 2016 or Eternal like you can in this game.

In Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal:
Shoot focus demon. Falter surrounding demons. Glory kill focus demon.
In Doom TDA: Parry projectile. Falter demons. Punch combo an Imp. Parry incoming projectile. Kick super heavy closing in, follow up with an SSG or Chainshot.
Simplified situations but you get the point.

Did you go to all life Sigil locations, because sometimes a hidden Sigil counts as a secret. You might’ve skipped out on finding your way to it if you thought you didn’t need it.

I’m not sure, but I’d recommend checking your map’s surroundings regularly to see if a Sigil icon pops up nearby. Secret markers will reveal what they are when you get close enough.

I don't even find the Eternal Barons cool or intimidating in the slightest and I don't like their color scheme very much

2016 Baron is my favorite. But Eternal Baron is the weakest Baron design in the series IMO.

glory kills still exist, just in a smaller fashion. the new strike system offers more mobility and situational awareness of what’s going on around you (especially since you can look).
i do wish we had i frames though. you did in the other games.
interestingly, enemy shots that were already fired would continue, but no new shots would fire until after you left the GK state. so you could use it tactfully

Not this game, but I had issues with others and had to roll back. I think it was Dec 24 drivers that were good but I can't be sure now
the fix i heard for this is to roll back to old drivers

I’ve only ever played FPS on console. Switching to kbm is a hard change, and I’ve never committed to it enough for it to stick. Console gaming is cheaper and shooters are my favorite genre so I opt to stick with it.

depends on the situation, but they have to go down quickly. Usually shield bash -> melee or shotgun. Sometimes impaler
rarely pincushion
I find that the best way to quickly dispatch of them is getting a shield charge and bashing them, you can instantly use a glory kill on them as you hit

each block input counts as a separate parry, even when the shield is visually up
ive def landed some parries when i was sure they wouldnt connect

think of parrying in souls games where you can't act for a while after attempting a parry, that doesn't exist here
the parry system in general is sketchy
you could theoretically click mouse2 on every other frame, at 60fps that'd be m2 -> 16.67ms gap -> m2, and each one would count as a separate parry attempt
don't play them so can't relate on that score. I like that I can do the thing when I press to do the thing when combat is fast

Also it lacks content compared to other Tekken games
Despite how broken Jin's parry was. Tekken 7 Jin is one of the sauciest Tekken characters of all time in terms of gameplay.
His design got butchered in Tekken 8 becoming much easier, significantly less depth, much more broken, and a lot of his moveset was replaced with bootleg great value Devil Jin moves.
Y'know I think it would've been awesome if we could kill dazed enemies with the shield throw, slice them in half like fodder. Would be a nice bit of extra depth.
Tekken 8 is in a horrible state ATM on the other hand.

still didnt beat the game on UN but from what ive been hearing, use the shotgun and the mace fully upgraded and keep your armor up
you can start a 2nd nightmare playthrough to practice a level right before you dive into it on ultranightmare, thats what i did with doom eternal and it helped out a TON
The thing is that I don’t really don’t use the shotgun, I use the nail one
I will start a nightmare one tomorrow and practice on it, thanks
also memorize spawn locations and make sure you prioritize the very lethal enemies first like the revs
I feel like the nail one is more efficient, but I couldn’t agree less that the shotgun is very powerful and shocking towards the enemies
well use it i guess if you want to. its pretty helpful with armor, also since you're gonna play ancestral forge you should be getting your first wraith crystal. upgrading your shotgun after that makes it really strong

the nail definitely is more efficient and stronger, but the shotgun gives you a steady supply of armor which allows you to afford more mistakes

Gameplay wise I'd have to give it to both Eternal and TDA. 2016 is still very much a enjoyable game. Especially that art style and story.
As an all around experience, definitely TDA. TDA is my favorite nu doom.
Being honest, I never liked Mick's music as much as seemingly everyone else. I do love his opera and ambient tracks in Doom. But the rest of his tracks felt flat and repetitive. I prefer his work on machine games wolfenstein.

Classic Doom only has their campaigns, mods, and Deathmatch. Deathmatch was revolutionary for its time, but now it's just a gimmick. It was surpassed by Quake.

It took a little while to get into it. Tried it the first few levels and thought it was ok. I left it for a week or so. Turns out I was misunderstanding the systems.

The bit in chapter 22 with the 2 Cosmic Barrons at the same time is doing my head in. Trouble with the parries and melee animations is that you can still be harmed during an animation so while I'm parrying one of them, the other kills me in 1 hit (I'm on Ultra Violence)

Hard to if they don't always hit at the exact same time. Like I said, if the other hits you while you're in the middle of a parry animation you can't stop the other one.
I'm hoping to beat both at the same time though because there's an optional challenge for it
the parry animation is like 1 femto second, and the parry window is pretty forgiving. you can do it just time it better
make sure to use the falter window to get your bearings
and prioritize one of them instead of fighting both
2 cosmic barons is basically a single cosmic baron thats on 2x speed
when both are meleeing you atleast

You need to be able to do parries in quick succession in this game sometimes vs multiple enemies/projectiles amd still parry others if one gets through... or it will potentially end your run I think
Those fuckers sure do make good use of that 1 second.

I've been using the mace and Super Shotgun on them. Mace has a long animation though.
Maybe I should try the grenade launcher and keep some distance since I have it fully upgraded to spawn clusters too

I was saying earlier that I was having trouble beating the 2 Cosmic Barrons that attack you at the same time in chapter 22

Yeah I kept getting killed because one would hit me while I'm in the middle of an animation parrying the other

I gave up on these two and just used the BFC to kill them both at the same time for the mission objective
Ideally you could put the shock rune on your shield so you can stun them, giving you a little wiggle room to land some additional SSG buckshot on them
I wanted to do that but I had no BFC ammo.
I ended up killing one with an execution, then I immediately tried melee killing the other with the Mace and I thought I was gonna lose again because the 2nd one kept hitting me while I was stuck in the mace animation
I need to keep an eye out for some BFC ammo as I still need to do the challenge for killing 25 enemies within 10 seconds
Nvm just got it at the 2nd big area where the protected enemy is
