Replayed it just now and it's still super phenomenal (and the VEGA train battle is one of the hardest fights in DOOM history)and I thought it was the best level in all of DOOM, until the Cosmic Realm topped it

Slower pacing to compensate for a longer campaign. Personally I think the developers could’ve pushed their players with greater combat intensity, especially since the inclusion of the sliders gave them the freedom to do so. In an attempt to avoid exhaustion and fatigue, Doom: The Dark Ages takes a much slower and approach in ramping up its difficulty- although I find this as a detriment to the game’s replayability. As much as I love it. The campaign could’ve easily been shaved down to 15-18 levels, with the rest of those resources being used to create additional content. This way the levels could have more distinctness to their difficulty as well.
Fun fact, setting the Master Volume to 19% makes it so the pause menu is muted while the gameplay is not. It's pretty useful if you don't want to hear the game music while switching to another tab.

Look at the Foundry in 2016, or Exultia in Doom Eternal. Shorter campaigns, and yet both early game levels stick out for their respective encounters.
I can’t really recall many encounters in the first 4 levels of Doom: The Dark Ages.
turning off tutorials also turns off those missions at the start where its like "shield charge 15 enemies"
Nvm, below 15% mutes the music in the gameplay.
18% is the max if you don't want to hear the music in the menus.
And the game can handle more enemies at once, yet it uses this capability for fodder more often than not. I rarely see more than 3-4 heavies on screen at once, with the occasional super heavy.
Perhaps the way the AI and the parry system works in this game, makes it too chaotic to have more than that amount present at once, but I doubt it.
also i highly recommend turning off the slayer pain grunts in audio settings

I don't really see the complaint, one is more jarring than the other for movement. As for an enemy coming at you, you can dash away from them, and in TDA, you can do the same with a sprint jump, a shield bash towards a different enemy, or just... using the shield to block the attack- I don't really see the problem. Plus, it being the same as Eternal would just be boring. It'd also make no sense chronologically, as the Slayer only got the double jump during 2016, and the dash during Eternal. He had neither during 64. However, what we have is satisfactory enough, so, I don't see the big issue.

to do so with the shielf requires very specific circumstances, and you can't control the direction you go in, it's overall very niche. the meathook allows you to control the amount of momentum, and in which direction. the shield doesn't allow you to stay in the air for eternity either, nor is it a restacking tool.
and here i feel like you're completely missing the point, i'm not complaining about anything, you made that up. and the sprint is fundamentally different from the dash due to it being used to reset momentum, redirect momentum, single dashing, and you can use it in all directions. it also creates a much more distinct effect which is important when avoiding enemy attacks.

i'm very familiar with eternal, so i can conclusively say it has a lot of depth, but since i'm not very experienced with tda, i can't say how much depth it has

TDA's depth seems to emerge from player expression for me.
You can find all sorts of different play styles depending on what weapons and melee actions you combine. How you form your "combat sentences" can vary wildly

its more about how much stuff they put in to match the slayer which just turns it to a chaotic battle each time trying to remember all combos and weapons to use for specific enemies

such a underwelming scene for the demons on the immora intro cause there was way less demons compared to how many sentinels shows up which makes no sense for the lore about the horde like there was only 1 titan in that intro sequence and it wasnt even armored!

Took a walk into Doom Marine's room, and noticed a helmet he has on a workbench to the left side of the preator suit off. Helmet looks roughly similar to his helmet in TDA
are any of the other melees worth using, or is dreadmace just the ebst option?
I mean there's the gauntlets that can stun lock, damage dealt increase infliction, and AoE chain attack.

All sorts of shit went wrong. Broken objective markers. Serrat clipping and bugging through the terrain. Demons spawning in at the arena I’m supposed to be able to access whilst flying Serrat. The last landing area not opening and letting me progress.
Right after I praised this level too, smh. No clue what caused this. Game has been bug free for me until this.

You can even force 2016 demons to kill each other if you get in the way of other demons and they accidentally friendly fire.

Auto turret is disappointing mainly because I really like the slayer having a predator-style shoulder gun, and wish it was used more like the one in Eternal.
It felt like the devs intended to give him one but thought it was too powerful to be used at will so they made it a shield rune instead.
i use heaven splitter over ground fissure because i don’t find the armor gain to be substantial enough and the stun + shock allows me to get in close with the ssg/gauntlet/dreadmace with no risk

Like, if you execute a Mancubus while jumping at its front, you'll saw it on half down the middle. If you execute while jumping at its back, your throw your shield onto a machine on its back which malfunctions and kills it.

anyone else had encounters fail to spawn? i was just playing the stomach level, went through a door, the barrier came up, music ramped up, but no enemies would spawn. tried reloading checkpoint a couple times, same thing, just had to restart the level. this was just on a regular nightmare playthrough, so at least it wasnt a UN run lol. if i got soft locked because of that, i'd be pissed.
I'm playing Siege part 1, and I had an encounter where an Imp spawns behind a gate, and the gate's supposed to open, but it didn't, leaving the Imp safe from and leaving me stuck in that room with no choice but to start over.
It's simple because it doesn't line up with timeline of events. Besides they feared him due to him being under maykr control.
Because everything happening in the game has been hinted at through the lore in Eternal’s codexes.
And maybe it’s because the developers have also confirmed it’s a prequel, lol.
Plenty of things differ from the codex in Eternal.
The eternal codex says that Doomguy was beloved and admired for his performance as a gladiator, and made into a king after killing that titan.
Both of those things already happened by the beginning of Dark Ages, but rather than a king, he seems to be a slave for the makyrs.
Furthermore, instead of admiring you, civilians are scared shitless of you. Worridly warning each other not to do anything that could anger you and to stay out of your way.

Novik even announces to everyone to stay away from you because you're dangerous and calls you a weapon.
Thira's the only one who treats the Slayer like a person the whole game.
That's a result of getting divinity machine buffs
Again, the eternal codexes say he was made a king for killing the titan. That is clearly not the case in Dark Ages.
Arachnotrons are present in Dark Ages, even though the eternal codex for it says that Ranak made them from genetic samples of the Spider Mastermind's corpse.
Even though Dark Ages takes place before the Slayer kills the Mastermind, and before Ranak defects to help.

take a closer look at their design, they don't look like they have the high tech augmentation and stuff unlike ones in Eternal. Also Mastermind happened in original Doom.
Dooms 1, 2, and 64 happen in a different timeline than 2016 and Eternal.
Even if you're taking Doom 1 into consideration, that was also supposed to happen way after Dark Ages.

In Eternal, Hayden tells you Hebert was from before your time with the Sentinels. In Dark Ages, it's the second level.

Arachnotrons are not solely tied to 2016’s Spider Mastermind. Hell traverses all realms and timelines. There are multiple “breeds” of the same demon. The Spectre and Mancubi codexes help explain this in Eternal.
The Betrayer’s son is also in TDA. We see him in a few cutscenes. In Eternal, the Betrayer’s son has already had his soul corrupted and twisted into powering the Icon of Sin. So he could not be alive if this game weren’t a prequel.
The Unholy Crusade, explained in Eternal’s codexes, is how the last of the Night Sentinels and the Doom Slayer got trapped in Hell. This is when the Betrayer is influenced to turn on his comrades in exchange for his son’s life. The rest of the Sentinels are slain as a result. In Doom 2016, we see the ghosts of these Night Sentinel pay their respects to the Slayer.
From there, the Doom Slayer fights Hell for an unknown amount of time until he is entombed and eventually excavated by Samur.
At the end of Doom Eternal, Davoth is defeated and Hell can no longer exist outside their realm. They cannot invade Argent D’Nur like we see them doing in TDA.
Hugo Martin, the game director, also said that this game is exploring the Slayer Testaments. It’s understood that the events of these testaments took place before Doom 2016, and Doom 2016 took place before Doom Eternal.

Anyway replaying a lot of Dark Ages missions today, and the first half in general feels like it has bland music in general outside of Siege Part 1
The 2nd half has CONSISTENTLY fantastic music on the other hand
When I play the first half of the game I do understand the sentiments that the music is "Mick Gordon at home" or "bland"
But when you reach the second half of the game, and start hearing Into the Void, Infernal Chasm etc....that is when it hits you....the music is GODLIKE
I don't think it's bland, rather just not as interesting as other tracks

TDA main menu track, When Shadows first lengthened, is one of my favorites. Up there with Doom 3 main menu Tweaker and Quake 1's main menu track for me.
I don't know if it's me but I think since the last update with the audio fix it sounded as if they also added in stems that weren't previously heard in lieu with the enemy balances. Like the first mission in Khalim City the warm up arenas sound so much heavier and there was also a riff that I never heard before when I first played TDA
Although I can only say this for the first mission as I'm just playing about with slider settings for my second playthrough

Eternal has 2 menu themes, base and ancient gods. Base is done by Mick Gordon and TAG is by David Levy.
Both start off heavy but become ambient track afterwards, they way synths are done is also extremely similar

Normal speed and normal difficulty, I tried hard mode and ended up dying a lot
I assume it's because game was already being in production so they worked with Finishing Move during that time, and since someone needed to compose for the DLCs they hired Levy and Hulshult.
