Many users now and avid doom fans have been concerned for the current state of Doom The Dark Ages requiring Ray Tracing as a mandatory requirement.

Why?
Ray tracing actively helps speed up the development process and has been stated in an official interview to have saved Id software years of development as baked lighting every section of the huge map in TDA would have been a monstrous challenge and would have left doom fans without a new game for almost a decade.

Also it’s a technological leap in graphics, far exceeding the graphical fidelity of Doom Eternal which only had reflective RT and Doom 2016.

Performance concerns:

The minimum spec requirement for TDA is a 2060 super/ Rx Radeon 6600 and an Intel 10700k/Ryzen 5700x.

The 2060 Super came out in 2019, 6 years before the game’s release, which exceeds the release date for predecessors like Doom Eternal (the minimum spec was a 1050 ti and was released in 2016, 4 years prior to release). So Id software made the game more accessible to users with outdated hardware.

According to TechPowerUp https://www.techpowerup.com/review/doom-the-dark-ages-performance-benchmark/6.html: a 3060 (which performs 10% Better than a 2060 super: https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-buying-guide,5844.html) can achieve a stable 60 fps at 1080p ultra nightmare settings with DLSS Quality. Assuming a 2060 super achieves the same as a Rx 6600 (51 fps). Then the balanced preset would be able to logically achieve 60 fps stable.

In Doom Eternal, according to Tech PowerUp https://www.techpowerup.com/review/doom-eternal-benchmark-test-performance-analysis/4.html: a Similarly matched GPU to the 1050 ti performs at around 60 fps as-well. Matching the minimum spec FPS for TDA without RT.

Even on the high end, a 5090 and a 2080 ti Super (highest end GPU’s available at time of launch) achieve 170-180 fps in both benchmarks.

Goes to show the ID software has had the same optimization they’ve always had.

“But Upscaling sucks”:

The new DLSS 4.0 transformer model makes the difference between balanced DLSS and quality upscaling almost negligible, and the same goes for FSR 4. In 2025 upscaling tech has been greatly improved and a legitimate tool for developers to push their games to the limit.

“But the game is buggy”

Id software is working on current bug fixes and patches in the near future, in the meantime you can check out steam guides or other user’s temporary fixes.

It took me a while to figure out his move set. Several desk smashes and like 30 deaths, but now I parry 90% of his shots. After his 3 hit combo, melee once, then use the chainshot, or super shot gun. Fire once then immediately parry, fire once, then immediately parry then again. He goes down super quick. The issue I had with him became everyone else around him killing me because I'm focusing on him
