Eternal says Valen's son was resurrected "as" the Icon but it isn't really true, and I suspect they worded it like this so modern fans wouldn't feel left out if they didn't play the original. Logically it's more like:

• Doomguy kills it in Doom II.
• Hell uses Valen's son as a vessel to resurrect it, similarly to Betruger and Olivia Pierce.
• It comes back as the Icon as we see it in Eternal.

Time travel is, like, kinda sorta possible in Doom but it isn't really implied to be a thing.

The Sentinels colonized tons of planets long before the Unholy Wars, anyway.

Doom 2016's history instead posits that Earth's growing energy demands only got worse and worse, and Earth was in dire straits until the UAC managed to manufacture Argent Energy by exploiting Wraith Energy from Hell. Further, 2016 establishes that Argent Energy has crept into basically all facets of modern life because of how essential it is to keep modern society up and running.
