My point is that in modern doom the bfg is entirely separate from the rest of your arsenal because it’s designed as a get out of jail free card and ammo is scarce. Bfg in classic games used plasma ammo and was a legitimate part of your arsenal that you’d use consistently like any other gun. I have no idea how they would do this in modern doom, but it would be cool to see.

I would also presume a significant part of the average player's playtime will likely be taken up by exploration. 2016 and Eternal's levels are usually pretty linear. TDA looks to have much more open levels you can explore for a long time, or A->B right to the end of the level.
