Culturally china, korea and japan are far more on the rigid societal perception side like follow the rules, bring honor to your family and ancestors by contributing to society and do not bring dishonor by going out of line. but each of these three countries has their own flavor of it, with china technically being a bit better from what I've seen in this aspects. Funnily enough similar trends have also developed in the US but with a more individualistic spin so instead of doing it to bring honor to the family, IE your parents to brag about it, people do it to feel/show that they are accomplished/living the dream
