There's a lot for stuff like that, but a few general bits I could offer

  • If you're staying too much in your head, you're interacting not with reality (outside), but your interpretation of it (inside), which is inherently flawed and biased. The more you go off of that and things centered around it, the more the resulting conclusions will become incestuous and degrade, further departing from reality. Which is why it's never good to stay too much in your head, without checking in with the outside regularly.
  • For people who are too harsh on themselves, especially if dealing with self hatred and such - A good idea is to flip the script and switch positions. Imagine if it were a friend of yours - would you treat them the way you've been treating yourself? Would you treat a stranger like that? etc. It's a good way to check for biases in regards to yourself.
  • In regards to observations, it's a skill that is born from general curiosity. I'm talking about obsessively asking "why? how? in what way?" etc. at literally anything you encounter. Obviously that sounds extreme(ly overwhelming), but it turns into second nature eventually. And you don't start there, you start with doing it with a few things and just try to procedurally analyze it like that, and the more you do it, the more you'll get comfortable and proficient with it and so on.
