Hi there. Lurker from Canada. Im thinking about getting a ferret or 2 and have loads of questions. Ive done some research and cant tell if ferrets are low or high maintenance.

Have heard they can be fed diced beef with proper cat food and have also read they should be on a full meat diet.

Then there's ferret proofing.

Time wise I work long hours but would.totally have 6 ish or more to play with them most days and hang out.

Process: Animal having a bad => call vet (during off hours) to get priority => rush to vet => vet does normal vet things which they otherwise do as well => animal gets treatment => done

Emergency treatment basically only differs in the speed / time of day at which the treatment is required, compared to a normal vet visit.
If you compare it to humans, it's like comparing a scheduled hospital visit to an emergency room visit.

While I love the idea as a concept, I think the biggest concern with this is the risk that people rely on the Internet instead of having a vet set eyes and hands on the animal. To an untrained person a lethargic animal with internal problems just seems bored because the Internet told them that ferrets need lots of playtime or they get sad... And then there's the blame when something doesn't work that they tried based on a care video. So anything past 'here's how to trim nails' or 'rarely bathe and just use oatmeal' are risky to both the person making the vids and the animals

Personalized advice via a ferret ticket here at least gets more detail and customized care advice

I meant caretaking as in general upkeep and keeping them happy and healthy, i wont ever suggest anyone relies on the internet for anything medical (though people do it anyway). There are a lot of little tricks i learned just from watching the stream and i have never even touched a ferret

Including but not limited to: Cage climbers, fights with blood/poo/pee (so not the regular hierarchy fights), ferrets acting outside of their regular patterns.

Keep in mind that a good bunch of the oldies have the tendency to look lethargic, but they are often just old and sadly riddled with problems, this causes them to slower than a gen pop ferrets. That's also one of the main reasons they get surrendered.

You can check with people in the ferret stream or one of the longer time wiki contributors. Often they can give you directions on whether the ferret you're looking at is acting 'normal' for them. Also if you are not sure about the thing that is happening, make a #ferret-ticket . Rather have a ticket too much than too few.
