Ferrets are obligate carnivores. They cannot have anything that isn't meat (ferret kibble is 100% protein)

Yeah it's the only marshal thing I give them cause they love it. They get a proper diet other than that. They just have an obsession with trying to eat human sweets, I was trying to find healthy alternatives for something sweet for them. 😔

My credentials: been raising ferrets for over 30 years (yes I'm old) and have spent time working at ferret rescues. I keep up on all of the modern research

Chewy! I've been wanting to get some of these. I'm using wysong for kibble right now, but I wanna mix it up, especially since it's too hard for one of our babies.

We use a mix of Wysong, oxbow, and Instinct ultimate protein (one of the very few cat foods safe for ferrets, 100% protein)
Whatever you switch to, I would recommend not switching all at once, but mix in more and more of whatever you switch to and gradually reducing the wysong. They have sensitive guts and a sudden change can be rough. Either way you'll likely see them have softer stool/ possibly diarrhea during the transition

I'd love to pick the brain of shaye, whoever that is you guys talk about. we've tried multiple times to integrate Rayna with our other ferrets, but she always attacks on site. She gets along with the tiny baby (Wllow) we got with her at the rescue, but will try to murder anyone else

Shaye is the one who takes care of all the ferrets. And they are an exotic vet tech. If you submit a ferret ticket I think they're more likely to see and answer? (I think that's how that works right guys? I got lucky that Shaye was free and happened to answer me directly here)

Eggbinding is a big problem for chameleons as well. With chams it's almost like a 1:3 chance with females. Fortunately with beardies I've never known anyone's girl to have had problems, as long as they have appropriate uvb and calcium/vitamins, which isn't all that hard. But it is a risk, and it can happen, and it has. If you're not comfortable sexing a beardie or don't care too much, another way you can mitigate that risk is to buy from a respectable breeder and not from a big chain pet store. Healthy breeding lines are important and any mass produced or wild caught reptile is probably going to have more problems. Anyway, that's the end of my tangent on eggbinding.

You're right, it is avoidable, to a degree, with proper husbandry and diet! It's just something I will always warn people of, especially after having talked to Shaye about it in Twitch chat more than once and their experience with female beardies from a professional pov 😅 I've known a lot of people that had no clue about the risk of eggbinding in female beardies and the cost that may come with it until it was already too late>< (to me it's just another case of "not enough people do their full research before owning a pet of any kind", but let's not get into that)

No you're right, I work at a pet store and try to encourage that mindset - do all your research first. Seen what you're talking about more times than I can count. Most people don't know that eggbinding is even a thing.

Same thing with ferrets, a lot of people see cute ferret videos on youtube and just want one because they like the idea of a cute klepto tube sock and have no idea what it actually means to own one

I only have a vague idea myself, which is a big part of why I don't have any

but there's one that comes into work a lot, the owner walks him around on a little leash and harness and he's super freaking cute. A ferret, to be clear.

Such a sweety, he just gets cobwebs and dust bunnies in his whiskers from sniffing all under the shelves lol. I always try to clean them off.

Shaye is full time at the rescue and part time at a local vet so play time is based around when she has several hours free. Then there's also Maddie that helps out twice a week and will often give them some play time.

Ferrets also naturally sleep 18 hours a day, so they aren't super active normally. Of course, they make up for that by being total chaos socks when they are out.

Yeah, Thor calls them a lifestyle pet. You have to adjust your life around them. They can overheat and die if they're in 80 temps; they have several potential diseases that can cost thousands per year to treat and they have an average lifespan of 5-7 years.

I used to talk about ferrets when I was out doing public things. Like at my stylist. I stopped because I heard lots of stories about people who got ferrets and they died. There really should be more education even at the pet store. At the local petco there's a sign that says "hit the snooze button! Ferrets sleep 18 hours a day!" Giving off the impression that they are easy to care for. And i think that helps promote the myth that ferrets are cage animals

They can, if not cared for correctly.
Food is one thing, since they're carnivores the food will generally make them smell more and some foods are worse than others.
There's also hygiene, bathing them is bad for instance, since it will make them produce more oil (which is stinky). So people tend to over compensate, making it worse.

Then there's also the poop situation, since poop by it's very nature is stinky. Clean often and make sure there's a "bathroom" system.

I don't know if it would be too difficult for shaye to navigate since she has to cross the gate 827 times a day, but we put flexible drainpipe on the top of our gate and have had zero escapes since. Kitty is here from another rescue run by my friend who needed help medicating and syringe feeding her due to her wrist injury, she is thought to be around 5 years old and very likely has lymphoma

I could never have a ferret myself. My house is not suited for them, but this is also good

from what i have learned from what Shaye, Thor and others have said, they need way stricter temperature control then i can offer them. But ill enjoy them this way

there will be some upgrades to my appartment, so maybe in the future, but right now it would not be safe for them and i would never want them to be unsafe

cold is ok as long as its not dramatic changes I believe. people in europe often keep their ferrets in outside enclosures. they are able to stay warm. so the only real hard restriction is dont go above 80F

i have taken my ferrets out in 50 degrees recently and they had plenty of fun. I would probably be ok with them outside at 40 near the house but thats when I start getting uncomfortable lol.

derby was acting ridiculous too. youd think they never get cold as he had his front legs standing IN the soupie bowl as he was eating. it was so funny

shaye n thor keep the ferret room around 65 degrees fahrenheit… 80 degrees is danger zone for ferrets
