The problem is that they only saw the edited playthrough of Blue Prince which cut out all the hemming and hawing over the puzzles. The 300 hour full playthrough has so far failed to publish on YouTube, so only people that regularly watch the stream know the real struggle.

Look at Balatro: The game is this awful mess of nested if-else statements. It's really gross. Know what Balatro also does? Make LocalThunk richer than god and lets him buy shoes of gold. No one is shitting on him for his awful code.

You just don't want to put them inside of other if-else statements because that generally means 1) There's a simpler way to do the same thing; 2) It's harder to read (and thus debug); and 3) It's inflexible and hard to scale if you need to add more to it

In method A, check for thing
If true, do a thing
If false needs more checks, call method B
Method B checks the new thing, etc

Keeps it more readable by segmenting out the logic

Date, Text, and Drop down Facts also had a subtype
So if it's not one of those three, the subtype is irrelevant
But since the type and subtype are on different variables, Switch wouldn't work

Depends on the language, but you can sometimes do pattern matching on a switch statement and hit both at the same time. But yeah, my point wasn't about switches for that specific use case, just that in general there are almost always better options than nested if-else statements. In most languages anyway
