Yes, when the node outside Thor's network was hit with DDOS, it would first help with nocking out OSRS because the game is sensitive to interruption. Because Thor has symmetrical 3gbs/3gbs (3 gigabits per second), it takes a crapton of intereference. Eventually with enough hit, his live discord was effected and even stream. But mostly the game. At the same time or switching between Thor's ISP and DDOS Jagex.

The DDOS against Jagex dropped a chunk of players which some hate-wagoned to PirateSoftware. I think also 1 other vector where they bad actors where hitting Jagex account interface on Thor causing the server to logout and then timeout his MFA as a side effect. So the bad actor(s) have demonstrated a mutli-attack portfolio.

The great news is Thor's ISP has been ramping up mitigation, Jagex obviously doesn't want this and midigation on their own. Now its about time. At some point the bad actors are going to get too greedy and internet records are foreever.

You can't run L7 floods on ISP nodes AFAIK, and even then they'd have to be targeted at everything except something aimed at a CDN

It is correct. DDOS isn't an on/off attack. Think of it as a saturation attack. Wrong state packets are sent to the network, the network has finite resources to error correct and eventual runs out of processing power. A percentage of good/bad ratio is effected.

It did. At times it stuttered. But the pipe is fairly large and the DDOS originators couldn't sustain enough error traffic to overwhelm capacity. It was definitely enough to cause connection between the game.

Well, they did hit devices up in the ISP chain. L7 or not do not know, Thor told us what the ISP said. A node above Thors (Point of Presence) network was DDosed.

What I mean is, Thor's router and ISP fiber interface appeared unaffected - so Thor's network wasn't directly attacked.

I apologize, I only speaking to this because I've been on the streams, but I also work with networks and programming for my job and know some of what was going on.

That's...not how a DDoS on an ISP node works. It wrecks everything for every user under that node.

ISP nodes are dumb packet shufflers, to attack one you need to go for the L3 and L4 layers. Everything gets blocked/slowed down.

At the simplest of terms, a traceroute will show all the devices your signal bounced through - not including the hidden ones. An attack can navigate this chain and target infrastructure. As for the switches, ISPs certianly don't use a lot of non-smart devices. Many are managed sofisticated switches.

Traceroute hops don't cherry-pick one ISP aggregation switch unless they're coming from the same network.

The insinuation here is basically that the attacker was another customer on that same node.

Of course it doesn't. Some devices are multiple interfaces and traceroute won't be able to see all of them. It actually does cherry pick by using TTL. Traceroute is like a chain of pings waiting for the response from the last interface when time to live runs out.

Distributed Denial of Service is precisely why it most likely was not a customer.

Its how much do you want to spend. The ISP has a set level of service because they need to fulfill a watermark of quality.

That makes it sound like it's not a DDoS. You can't keep Twitch traffic ongoing while game server connection is wrecked, and OSRS was being DDoS'd at the time.

I'm pretty sure traceroute TTL hops don't let you cherry-pick one hidden interface on the type of switch an ISP operates with.

All protocols suffer when the queue is bricked

When you look up how tracert works, it uses UDP packets with TTL set so at some point because of TTL, a device will not relay the packet anymore and send back an ICMP response which trace route records if it can the IP/Mac address of the device. It increases the TTLL and goes again until the final destination is found. What is left is a trace of the devices that answered. Many factors skew this tool, such as not responding to UDP, ICMP being blocked or simply silently drops the packet.

Error messages happen all the time. It is surprising how much error can be handled with zero issue. Programs that are not robustly using their communication protocols get logicly fouled up and drop connections. A ddos event increases the probability. OSRS is not robust and sufferes first.

The streaming protocol is quite simple and robust and designed for hundreds(thousands) of dropped packets and keeps on trucking.

You're right, the game did go for a year without updates but he was already working on Heartbound again and had updated the game about two weeks before Steam made the change to label things as abandoned. However, Thor kinda got screwed because he put the patch in the beta version for a month and steam didn't count that as an actual update, it had to be in the full version.

If you're curious what it is EXACTLY, it's called a Hueforge - name of the software used to make them. Can take a photo and recreate it in 3d printer filament, by blending colours layer by layer. Then you export an STL file to print, and a set of instructions to swap to X colour on layer Y, next colour at layer Z, etc.
