DRM = digital rights management, its basically trying to ensure a sort of security in your game so nobody yoinks and pirates it. Things like all sorts of copy protection is also part of DRM. Its probably the biggest bad thing in gaming because back in mah days games did rely on good will and quality games while piracy worked in a way as a "try before you buy" thing, obviously illegal but it serves its purpose for people to try a game, if its good most morally alligned people also bought it.

I think the big disconnect is that people on my side of the fence think there is a communication error of some kind going on here, because in no way would a company need to continuously update a game they want to sunset at all. People already do what we want 'illegally' in the form of private servers (WoW for example had private classic servers before the official classic was a thing).

People, that do what you want, can do so specifically 'cause they do it illegally. Releasing some form of "legal private servers" brings IP and Copyright into the conversation, and that's where it all falls apart. Using WoW as an example, Blizzard would have to either:

a) Release the End of Life server build under some form of license, which would leave them vulnerable, if any of their licensees get into legal trouble over smth bad happening on their private server. Also that build will be pirated and installed on existing private servers that run monetization.

b) Release their hold on WoW IP rights.

I understand how from a dev POV this seems like a negative, but for the consumer this is the intended effect, and it is as a whole a positive.

We (I'm European) will miss out on some games at first (games that were not designed to respect our purchase / consumer rights at "end of life"), but in turn all games we purchase would be required to align with our interests, so we get a clean pool to choose from.

Devs of live service games would in time adapt to support our standard, just as we have a standard for electric sockets, now phone chargers, chemical regulation, and many other things, where the initial response also was for some products "well then I guess I won't sell in Europe!"

To add, I'm also a game dev, and I would be mortified to sell a product to a consumer that I might have to kill in a few months and not be able to refund people that trusted me with their wallets. So I see the obligation as a positive, it marks a clear, more respectful standard

While the concern is the consumer's protection, what about the developers? An artist has every right to take their artwork off the internet. So why should games be any different?
If all you were buying was a license to play online (and don't even think about that "it's technically illegal in the EU" bs), then the developer should absolutely have the right to remove your access to the game. It's like buying a ticket to a museum, it lasts for the day, you gotta buy a new one tomorrow. If the museum has to shut down due to cost, they can choose to keep the assets and not sell tickets anymore.

The Crew was their biggest argument for SKG and they abandoned it. It was a live service game, whose content could be experienced entirely in singleplayer, using multiplayer to enrich the experience. That is the kind of game that devs should be able to trim and sell as an EOL product.

You CANNOT do that with an MMO or MOBA, and SKG does not clarify that.

What SKG asks is for all games, which means all currently sold in the EU and all thereafter, to include an EOL plan so that the games can remain in a functional playable state.
In the FAQ, you have the question of those that don't own some of their assets.
SKG's answer is for them to SHUT DOWN, or to grandfather the assets of the game, into something that would comply with new laws.

That's on the operating system for killing your game.
That's why people create ports of games between devices and OS. It's not the developer's fault the OS doesn't support it, because it didn't exist or wasn't made for it.

For the thing about the YT moderation without giving them all those perms involving videos and stuff and actually tracking who did what ban...
Would it work to:
- Set up a bot that's given the permissions needed to ban people.
- Actual moderators send a request the bot to "ban <person> <reason>".
- Bot records who sent which ban request and why, and then acts on the request.

That would be great but lawmakers do tend to take their time. So it would, again, be better to at least improve things step by step rather than to do nothing.
