The SKG(Stop Killing Games) initiative attempts to enforce all developers currently publishing their games, for sale or for licensing, in the EU to
1: Require video games sold to remain in a working state when support ends
2: Require no connections to the publisher after support ends.
3: Not interfere with any business practices while a game is still being supported

What Thor criticizes about the initiative is what a "working state" implies, and how it would be achieved.
I haven't watched what critikal or asmon said about it, but I do believe the initiative itself is worded poorly and can be used in court as such.

I haven't played LoTF and tbh I don't think I want to. My take here is that the subgenre of soulslikes (needs a better naming convention) progresses the space with new games in the classification at around 60% of the time. For every Lies of P, there's a LoTF.

I mean you can't say they're not ambitious. Although from a dev team that literally existed for 3 years with no games under their belt, maybe a little too grand.

I'd say both LoP and LotF (the new one) are actually really good examples of what can be good in the genre of souls-likes

LotF doesn't come close to LoP imo but they are both still very good games.. issue is the overwhelming amount of other souls-likes we do not bring up in the discussion that are just absolute slop

This is what I think differentiates LotF and LoP for me

LotF feels like someone trying to make better Dark Souls

LoP feels like someone having their idea and using Dark Souls mechanics and design as one of the tools employed

Credit to Round8 and NeoWiz for choosing a vision for Lies of P and sticking to it. They could have caved and leaned into it being a souls like but they stuck with what they wanted to do. Not many devs can say that

And to be fair, I support that LotF very much could be a spiritual successor to Dark Souls if they learn to do it very well in the future, now that FromSoftware made it clear they are completely and utterly done with Dark Souls and Elden Ring strays from the original Souls design significantly into its own thing

And there is definitely audience for Dark Souls 4

It just has to be really good which will take a lot of failures to reach

I for one will never enjoy Elden Ring the same way I did Dark Souls because the boss design is just straight downgrade for me

I respect Elden Ring as a better game overall, but not a better souls game

Lies of P was somewhat unfortunate in that at the same time 2 other games with very similar aesthetics were developed by 2 other independent teams. I still meet people regularly that think LoP was a massive failure because the 2 similar aesthetic games were, and without playing them they're hard to tell apart.

(One of the 2 was Steelrising, the other I literally forgot)

I mean most bosses really, they leaned way too much into the arena-wide AoE garbage and endless combos with Elden Ring for me to enjoy the bosses

I mean even just Rellana (was that her name? There were so many R names in that game) in the DLC just keeps attacking endlessly with no punishment windows unless you parry which is something I abhor as it promotes a single playstyle in a game with large build variety

This is something I dislike in LoP too tbf, they also have parry-only mechanics

But I respect it as just a differentiation from souls formula

So I do in ER, it just makes the fight less enjoyable for me

Thing with bosses in ER vs Souls for me is they focus more on the cinematic aspect and less on the mechanic aspect, which works well for the masses of course, but for me it hurts enjoyment personally

Yea, I mirror that feeling about Elden Ring a bit. The amount of hit's in a combo enemies do steadily increased throughout the souls series, but is just utterly bonkers in Elden Ring.
In other entries, a combo is most of the time 2 hits, most enemies have a singular 3 hit combo. Very very few enemies have a 5-hit combo, when it happens it's a spectacle.
In Elden Ring the average amounts of hits any combo has is 4. Every boss has multiple combos with more than 3 hits, every boss has at least one "feint" combo, some bosses straight up have 8+ hit combos.
If a boss in Elden Ring attacks you it's more likely to be a 4 hit combo, than a single hit.

The moment I found out the way you survive Malenia's Waterfowl is literally running away from it and she can just spam it back to back was when I was the most disappointed with FromSoftware in the entire history of playing their games

Yea, Waterfowl is straight up an MMO mechanic.

Literally had fights with Malenia where she pulled Waterfowl 4 times in a row with no pauses

It doesn't have to be an enjoyable aspect for it to be an integral part of the combat loop.

Shields are generally considered objectively weaker than simple positioning and rolling when necessary.

Most bosses have decent recovery windows and those times are good for punish windows

Some attacks can be jumped over into jump attacks applying stance pressure, and you also have rolling attacks to immediately whiff punish

There is no way of reacting to waterfowl.
There is a way to predict waterfowl.
And act beforehand.
But there is no way to react to it if it happens.

And it gets worse when you realize she has like 3 very similar looking start-up animations for attacks in phase 2 that have very different solutions

The most important ones being Waterfowl and Phantom Strike

Waterfowl you want to run the hell away and then roll into it in final stage

Phantom strike you want to run sideways while dodging with precision timing in different directions everytime

If you roll while running from Waterfowl, you're dead

If you run while you should've dodged during Phantom Strike, you're dead

There is a way to survive waterfowl from point blank when not expectign it but it is extremely difficult and you have to be immediately able to recognize it is waterfowl

You with very precise movements circle her while she's in the air and roll twice in opposite directions each time since first stage of waterfowl has near perfect tracking but near the end it transitions into 2nd which has fairly bad one

It doesn't have to be, but investing significantly in the less fun components of combat may not be to everyones taste.
While a bad comparison literally, Elden Ring feels more turn based than Dark Souls. In dark souls the "turns" of player vs enemy happen randomly, chaotically. Sometimes you get 5 very nice punishable windows in a row, sometimes you don't get a window for 10s straight.
In Elden Ring the enemy does his 10s combo while you dodge, then you get to hit for 3 seconds, then it does an 8s combo while you dodge, then you get to hit for 3s, the it does a 12s combo, then you get to hit for 3s,...
Dark SOuls boss design is like a fire, Elden Ring boss design is like the ebb and flow of the tides.

There are a lot of ways to increase damage to the point where you just ignore the mechanics and kill the boss before they can become a problem

They are not "Oh waterfowl is happening, let's react" they are predicting waterfowl and then reacting proactively. Or in the case of the shield specifcally having a build to counter waterfowl.

And make it easier to see in phase 2

Because in phase 2 it looks almost exactly the same as her many other attacks

And for her one trick that wins her fights, that's a bit of an issue

Tbf I'm surprised very few people talk about how difficult phantom strike in phase 2 is, since that one is almost as difficult for me

I know how to handle it and it's still tough to pull off sometimes

Again I just want to point out I actually like Elden Ring, I just like Dark Souls better because I like Souls games more and Dark Souls just done that better

Elden Ring done tons of things extremely well

But I think it done it at a cost to the Souls aspects

I'm not saying FromSoftware shouldn't continue pursuing a new direction they gone in with Elden Ring, I'm saying it's not a direction I am really interested in following

It's not necessarily worse, it is worse in terms of being a Souls game, but that is no longer the main focal point, so it's just different

What I loved about Elden Ring personally was the world and the freedom of going anywhere you like and how full of content it was

My main gripe with Elden Ring is that it's too long.
Me and everyone I've talked to with a "completionist" playstyle agreed that by the end it's a real drag.
Fact is your build will be fully done with 60-80% of the game done. And then you slog through the remaining 20-40%.
I feel it would've been generally a better game if cut by about 20%. I think there's at least 20% of content that really is neither exciting nor anyone cares about, that could just be cut and make a more concise product.
