whew it is incredibly frustrating watching thor play the witness... i'm watching the previous stream, and he spent a full 45 minutes on this one puzzle, eventually getting basically the right answer and then gives up on the puzzle because he's tunnel visioning like crazy on the wrong opening, and just consistently refuses to explore anything both inside the puzzles and outside, and instead keeps bashing his head into the same puzzle over and over again until chat spoils it...

Because as someone who has 100% completed the witness, his playstyle feels like he's playing outer wilds by repeatedly just smashing his ship into various planets until he clips through the interloper/giants deep, completely sequence breaking things while not even looking at the puzzles that would have led him to the answer, it feels like he's using exploits while deliberately skipping out on the exploration and discovery aspects that make the game feel special to me, also i'm not the only one that feels this way, a lot of people were not getting banned for spoilers, but because they were expressing similar frustrations.

The "exploration and discovery" of The Witness will lead to you playing puzzles out of order. That's kind of the thing with that game??? If you walk around in random directions, i.e. explore... you'll find things... randomly... Playing them in order is basically the result of not exploring. And there's nothing wrong with attempting a puzzle without knowing the prerequisites to solve it because how would you know that you don't know? Sure, you can just leave and come back later, but why not try? He's figured out all the key principles one way or another.

That is also the way it works in most (if not all) security related competitions. You don't get tutorials, you get the puzzle and you figure it out from the parameters given. So I believe this is sort of a "work related" approach as they call it here.

Is it frustrating for those of us that note early on that the puzzles are not linear, sure, is it fascinating to watch anyway, definitely.

So long as he makes it to the end and enjoys the journey, theres no right or wrong way to play the game.

This game isn't linear, so there's no 1 size fits all solution, and there's no 1 correct way to play

To use another game with a similar openness, minecraft. A build centric person wouldn't call a redstone centric person out for "playing the game wrong" because they know that their style of play isn't the only one

Whether a person is like you, who leaves the area and comes back after learning from an much easier version of the same mechanic, thor who tries every possible solution that comes to mind as if he's trying to crack a defcon puzzle, or me who would use a guide because i don't want to be frustrated at the game and am willing to sacrifice the extreme highs of satisfaction to avoid the extreme lows of being stuck... theres no wrong way to play

Hell, even in more linear games like RPGs or multiplayer games there are many players who break the mold.

Granted, the players like you who just want to see them do their job right will be frustrated and yell at em, which will get them to yell back and the cycle begins.

But the point is that games are very rarely hyper linear as to have only 1 route to play. Thats what books and movies are for

The review I saw said its tuned fairly low at the start to be more accessible and while it does get a bit harder at the end, it may not be as difficult as previous games have been. But its also early in the life of the game and higher difficulty monsters haven't been released yet.

So far from what I've seen in Wilds being able to get gear that boosts harvesting stuff quite early is a big plus.

Means I can do a few fights, kill some stuff, and run around gathering herbs and such to build up some item reserves.

Difficulty also depends on overall experience with the franchise and he was a long time fan and enjoys souls type games so his metric for difficult may be skewed from the average player.
